Need assistance with living room sconces

Hi All,

Moving right along with the new house, and slowing down some too. Can't wait to share more pics but want to get a few things finished first! One thing that is desperately needed is lighting in the living room. Currently we have none! There are spaces for sconces on either side of the fireplace and when I had an electrician out to put dimmers in the rest of the house, I had him set these up for dimmers as well. Now I just need to get sconces. I have looked and found what I think I love but they just aren't in the budget right now. So, I need to find something else. Here are a couple of pics of the living room - 1 of the fireplace and 1 of the seating area in front of the fireplace.

Here is the sconce I love:

I am trying to stay around $200/sconce. The above is $360/sconce. Here are a few I have found that I think might work. Thoughts?

How much wall space is on either side of your fireplace?

Of the one's you chose, I like the last one.

Is this too modern? It's $116 @ lamps plus...

Thanks, Janice! If you are looking at the fireplace, there is 28" on the left, between the fireplace and the window, and 24" on the right, between the fireplace and the french door. Is there a "standard" size-wise I should be looking for?

I do like the one you suggested, and a great price! Might be a little too modern, though.

Thanks, kitschy & alex! alex, I agree on the price bullet. Thing is, I always intend to be budget minded and always look for the best deal, but at the end of the day I want what appeals to me and DH and we will love for a very long time to come. It really has played out well as in our moves, everything pretty much translates to our new environs so less $ spent in the long run.

You could probably start with a nice modern leather sofa. Choose a long console and replace the loveseat with it. Put the TV on that wall above it. You can then add 2 fabric chairs -- not sure whether there is space to place them on the end near the console or the other side of the coffee table? Your coffee table may actually still work. Choose a new rug that is less uniformed in pattern. Follow your inspiration pic, but using 2 chairs instead of 4.

It will be much easier on you all once the moves have been made. In most units, there's exactly one possible place for the bed and one place for the tv (opposite the bed). Everything else fits around them. A small desk can serve as a nightstand. A chair that pulls out into a bed may fit in the memory care room. A recliner would be nice for your father. A bistro-size table with two chairs will provide a place for guests to sit for your father's room. Be prepared to replace the pull out chair and the recliner with sturdy arm chairs that are easy to get out of in a few months or years as needs change. Slip covers are very useful. If slip covers aren't going to fit, choose washable fabrics on removable seat cushions (check the cleaning code on the label). BTW, many places expect new residents to provide laundry hampers that are picked up by the staff and washable wastebaskets for main room and bathroom.

Oh and I plan on getting a mirror for over the fireplace. The mirror we had sadly doesn't fit. Thinking frameless.

Frameless mirror.?............like one you'd install in a bathroom over a vanity? IMO seems like it might be too light in scale over your lovely detailed fireplace.

Thanks, beverly! While I don't LOVE the first one, I like it and especially for the price. I wouldn't feel like I am wasting money when I replace them with what I want. Bonus!

As for the frameless mirror, I was thinking of something like this:

But I am not crazy about it looking like the Batman symbol. The mirror we had that is too big had a nice gilt frame on it. Maybe I should keep looking for something like it but smaller.

I would get the least expensive one that you can live with. All the ones that have been shown are up light shades and your dream sconce is a down light. It's a big difference imho.

As for the mirror, now that I've seen Batman, I can't unsee it. That would drive me crazy!

Like this dress Nicole Kidman wore recently. I can't unsee the Batman. :-)

Well that mirror is lovely, though it may call some to the Bat Cave, and I can see that you are going toward a minimal, though a bit traditional style. Maybe the mirror in the slightly larger size?

I've also added a Barbara Barry oval from Henredon, though I'm not sure the size or finish will work for your room, and a mirror with a beaded edge which I thought might be minimal. But of course you'll want something that doesn't clash with your future scones.

I'm crazy about using mirrors with bubbles and imperfections. At my age I'm not interested in actually seeing myself in the mirror, but I love the sparkle.

@geokid, ha! Never saw that Nicole Kidman dress. Like you, now I can't unsee it! Good point about uplight and downlight. We really need light in there, so at the end of the day my dream sconce might not work. But, I agree with getting something I can live with for now.

@beverly, thanks for the mirrors. I love the Barbara Barry one. I was trying to find something other than circular. We have a sunburst in another room, so wanted to avoid that as well. And yes, traditional, with a bit eclectic and minimal, all rolled into one! The couches were a find and while we have intentions of recovering one day, we kind of like the quirkiness it brings for now.
