I have that same tip and use it to pipe frosting along a pizza-sized chocolate chip cookie. I found the coupler at Michaels. Did you try the large craft stores? Otherwise, perhaps you will find it online.

You don't need to use a coupler. Just put the tip in a bag and push down so it's seated firmly. Couplers are really just made so you can change tips while using the same bag. If you want a larger bag than you have available without a coupler just make one out of parchment paper. I mention the parchment paper because it seems like many people buy smaller bags than I like. Smiles. You can still look for a coupler if you prefer but it's not really necessary.

Yes, you certainly can use the pastry tip without a coupler. I have a few pastry bags relegated to large pastry tips.

You'll need to (gradually) cut off the tip of the pastry bag, until the decorating tip fits snuggly inside the bag.
Don't cut off too much, or the tip will fall right through, and there will be no going back once that happens.

If you would rather not cut the pastry bag, then you could also use decorators' parchment triangles to make your own disposable bags.

I agree, I have several large tips that I just use with a bag as Sol describes above. They are mostly used for piping whipped cream onto pies, although I have one very large tip for making rose petals. It works fine without the coupler.

I just snip the corner off of a gallon size freezer ziploc bag and use that for my decorating. I am FAR from a pro and it works really well. Here are some from munchkin #1's birthday awhile ago.

Tracey your cupcakes look delicious. Well I plan on making a pie this weekend so I will use the tip without a coupler. I do need a new decorating bag though, that will be easy enough to find.

My largest tip is #789, and even though I do have some large couplers, there is no way my 789 will fit with the coupler. I bought it at Michaels and asked the woman there just how do I use it if I don't have a coupler. It has a rectangular, long opening and the edges are "serrated"--there's probably a term to describe the edges of the tip's opening, but I don't know it! lol

Anyway, the clerk at Michaels said to use it the way Sol described it, and if it made me feel better, I could always put a rubber band around the outside of the bag where the tip is located.

Then she reminded me that the mass of the frosting and the pressure/force of my pushing the icing out through the tip would keep the tip in place. I loved the physics lesson! I have not used it yet, but feel confident about it.
