decorating a shaped cake

I was given a Norco Floral Bouquet cake pan. I just used it for the first time and the six cakes came out perfectly shaped (flowers). I don't want to frost them as the lovely shape would be covered in frosting. I'm looking for ideas to decorate them as a birthday cake.Has anyone here used these pans and has any ideas? I thought perhaps a glaze sprinkled with coloured sugar, but don't know how to make a glaze. Any suggestions would be most welcome.Thanks.

You could cover them with ganache. I'm at work and not sure of the ratio of chocolate to cream for pourable ganache (easily googled)but it will conform perfectly to the cakes and dries to a lovely, shiny finish. It's also dead easy to make. Heat the cream and pour over chopped chocolate. That's it.

My first reaction was ganache too. A cup of chopped chocolate with 2/3 cup of cream makes a nice pourable ganache. If you want a vanilla glaze try this combination.
1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
2 1/2 teaspoons milk
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon butter
You can adjust the milk if you think the glaze is too thick, just do it a little bit at a time.

I always use the method from "The Cake Mix Doctor" (and use it for ANY flavor cake mix): BASIC YELLOW BUTTER CAKE 1 yellow cake mix (18-1/4 oz.) 1 stick butter (8 Tblsp.) butter, melted (do not use margarine) 1 cup milk (2% or whole Â not skim) 3 large eggs 2 tsp. Vanilla extract Preheat oven to 350Â° F. Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans. In large mixing bowl, combine ingredients listed above. Beat just until blended, and no lumps remain. Pour into pans and bake at 350Â° F. for 27-29 minutes or until cake tests done. If making cupcakes, bake for 20 minutes.

I think they would be easier to cut frozen. I would try it, if not defrost slightly and cut. Cakes and breads can be refrozen no problem.

Hmm.. interesting. Sffog has a good idea. My thoughts were to set the pan on either an insulated cookie sheet or doubled sheet/cookie pan. Alternately or maybe in addition I'd try lowering the heat 25 degrees and see if a slightly slower oven might help. I think the trick might be in the insulating the turrets by either sffogs foil or putting it on another pan. Let us know how you make out.

Kcc - Don't know whether or not you're in the minority here, but you are not alone! If you're concerned that the gray is drab and will make you feel claustrophobic, listen to your instincts. Just because gray is the chic color of the moment does not mean that it's right for you or your room. Gray is a very difficult color. It will make a room look like the interior of a submarine if the furnishings and other colors are not close to perfectly done. In addition, you have that large beautiful window. What kind of climate do you have? Gray days, rainy days? Imagine being in a home with dogs and a small child on a gray drizzly day with gray walls (and brown drapes) framing the view. I would paint all the walls, except for that nice red one in your dining room, a rich, deep cream - or, as others have suggested, a gold that would look good with your tan furniture. Those colors would keep the room bright and cheerful. Are you very attached to that rug? Could you put it somewhere else in your home? IMO it's the one element that's throwing everything else off. The colors and style don't coordinate with the rest of your furnishings and wall colors. Could you try going with bare floors for awhile? Then eventually get an oriental rug that contains all your colors - gold and tan and red and some blue/green. This would pull everything together and warm up the space. And it would also better hide what the doggies and baby might do to it!

chickadee, I'll be watching this thread to see how yours goes, I have a cupcake pan that makes 12 perfect rosebuds, but I was not successful with a glaze, it "filled in" the petals. I'm still looking for a solution to that.

I would paint on a thin glaze with a pastry/basting brush in order to keep the details. It'll give it a nice glaze. I'd also maybe sprinkle it with just a little superfine sugar or sanding sugar afterwards to give it a little sparkle.

Chi's idea is good. I was going to say, that's why I said you might have to mess with the thickness. Also you want it thin enough but you should also hold them upside down after you pour it on to get rid of the excess that gathers in the folds. Using a brush after that would be good, but just using the brush sounds good too.
