I would call your vet and see what they say, to be safe.

I would venture to guess that the big dog did not share...LOL. I, too, would call the Vet. I've heard that baking chocolate or dark chocolate is worse than a regular candy bar. I suspect the dog will be fine, but peace of mind is a good thing.

But to ease your mind a bit? My Dsis's dog once ate a whole Whitman's sampler. Another time he ate a complete batch of chocolate cupcakes (24) wrappers and all--and suffered no longterm effects. He had some potty issues for a day or two, naturally, but who wouldn't if they ate 24 cupcakes and papers?

I had a dog that stole a bunch of M&ms. He was ok, had a bit of the runs. Never seemed sick.

Different dogs have different levels of sensitivity to chocolate, and different chocolates have different amounts of the substance (theobromide?) that can be harmful to dogs.

My guess is the big dog got it all, and further based on the fact that they call them "choclatey melting wafers" rather than "chocolate chips" indicates to me that there is so little actual chocolate in the "wafers" that they are prohibited by law from using the word "chocolate." In all likelihood they are some melty chemical concoction with coloring and flavoring, with little to no actual chocolate.

Although there is probably no need to worry about them from a chocolate standpoint, there's no guarantee that there's not some other chemical in the pseudo-chocolate that is harmful.

My grandmother used to send a wrapped box of chocolates every Christmas and our doxie would find them under the tree, unwrap and eat. No issues. You'd think my Mother would have learned not to place them there :)

Last year after my nephews birthday dinner my SIL left what wasn't served of a very expensive heavy/rich chocolate specialty bakery cake on the counter in the kitchen. Their mid sized breed who doesn't typically 'counter graze' got into it, ate much of half a cake and spread the rest all over everything. He didn't get sick either...

It is scary when our dogs do something like this, isn't it. Mine has eaten chocolate twice and raisins once. Now, we don't leave anything on the counters. She has been fine both times, but we watched her closely for hours afterward for any sign of problems. She was totally fine, but like others have mentioned, each dog is different. I hope your dog is doing alright.

I had one of my Danes eat an entire package of chocolate coated mint cookies, the vet said to bring him in immediately along with the package. The vet put one drop of this stuff in his eye and with in seconds he was hacking up those cookies. They were fully intact not even chewed! He had wolfed them down. Vet said that much even with such a big dog could cause damage.

My neighbors cat started acting crazy and having seizures, vet said he thought it was poisoned. I had noticed the cat batting around a foil covered Candy one day. I asked if they knew if the cat ate any. Well turns out they found a stash of them in the cats hiding spot, and these were very strong dark chocolate brought over from Germany. Vet confirmed it was indeed chocolate poisoning, it damaged her nerves and mentally, she walked sideways and with her head at an angle till the day she died, but she lived through it. Just really weird to see her try to run.

Years ago, my large dog at over one pound of dark, milk and white chocolate. Nothing happened but I was terrified she poisoned herself. I remember the vet saying not all dogs react to it. We were lucky because she didn't. Mine were wafers too so it probably wasn't even real chocolate, lol.

Why is chocolate bad for dogs?

Chocolate can contain high amounts of fat and caffeine-like stimulants known as methylxanthines. If ingested in significant amounts, chocolate can potentially produce clinical effects in dogs ranging from vomiting and diarrhea to panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death in severe cases.

Typically, the darker the chocolate, the higher the potential for clinical problems from methylxanthine poisoning. White chocolate has the lowest methylxanthine content, while baking chocolate contains the highest. As as little as 4 ounces of milk chocolate or only 0.5 oz of baking chocolate can cause serious problems in a 10-pound dog. While white chocolate may not have the same potential as darker forms to cause a methylxanthine poisoning, the high fat content of lighter chocolates could still lead to vomiting and diarrhea, as well as the possible development of life-threatening pancreatitis, an inflammatory condition of the pancreas.

Thanks, everyone. They seem to be doing fine. Took them for a 6 mile walk as "punishment", lol. If I see anything remiss by the AM I will bring them in, but so far so good. Everytime that evil girl gets into something I can't believe it. I never leave any open food out because of the scent, but this was a boxed up cookie mix. Didn't think she would even notice it.

i'm guessing those wafers are not the real deal pure chocolate, if they were the melting for decorating type...6 mile hike?? who was punishing whom?? lol lol
