Foundation issues - or 'just an old house?'

I've been living in a small, wood-framed bungalow built in 1921 for just over a year now and have been noticing quite a few new cracks throughout the (mostly plaster-walled)house. But the most troubling are the vertical cracks I'm finding in my basement (shallow block foundation) running what appears to be every 16 inches or so over each stud from the the top of the foundation up to the joist-level. I literally have this occuring at each stud on 2 of the 4 outside walls in the basement. The house bows slightly in the middle (as detected walking on the 1st floor) and seems to lean to the south (as detected by the way doors swing shut and south-facing windows not opening all the way). Obviously some structural deflection (is that a term?) here in this old house, but do the cracks in the basement suggest bowing studs and possible rot? Is it worth opening up the wall? Or, is this just part of the joy of owning such an old home?
