Trivia Question: 'in-house' ground peanut butter

Hoping some one can help me! I'm in a "p" contest with a compatriot. . .he thinks that Whole Foods was the(grocery)store that "invented"/was the first to offer "in-house" ground peanut/nut butters. I'm a good ole Texas gal, but. . . I don't think so. The thought is that WF was "born" out of the Wheatville Coop in Austin back in the mid 70's. Surely some of the natural foods places in CA or on the east coast did this before the 70's?? Anyone have any info?? And. . . just to clarify. . . it doesn't have to be a "national entity". . . just a grocery that offered in-house/grind your own nut butters. Thanks!!

I don't remember the store.....but I remember a peanut butter machine when I was a kid, Don't think it was a supermarket....but more of a deli place. I remember it had a window that was completely filled with peanuts in the shell,,,,and they had a roaster and you could buy a brown paper bag full of warm peanuts or get a carton of peanut butter squirted out of a machine which looked a little like a soft serve ice cream machine....
This was more than 60 years ago in northern New Jersey. It was on the south side of Bloomfield ave in Caldwell.... on a corner.

I'm revealing my age but I was raised in LA and mom used to sometimes take us to a huge "farmers market" uptown. It was indoors, huge, and it had a lot of on-the-premises goodies, candies, baked goods, etc. and I remember a store that had peanut butter, etc. that poured out of a machine into a white carton. We didn't buy it as ours came in a jar from the neighborhood grocer. We left LA in 1945.

Just canned up some apple butter today and love it. I used Annie's Grandma's Old Fashioned Apple Butter recipe which uses apple cider. Don't know if making it with cider made it better or not, but I know I really like the results and will continue using it since I still have about 2 pecks of apples to use up. Oh, and I did let it cook down in the oven like Annie does. Madonna

I do so love these cookalongs! I wasn't able to participate this time, due to being sick as a dog during most of it. I had the flu and now a bunch of fluid has taken up residence in my lungs and refuses to leave. Anyway, here's my two peanut butter contributions, neither of which I was able to make this time, but both of which I have tried and are good, and relatively healthy. Peanut sauce for pasta (from the Smuckers Peanut Butter jar lid) 1 cup natural peanut butter (not the hydrogenated kind with added sugar) 1/2 cup warm water 1/2 cup ketchup 1 TBLSP soy sauce (I use low salt) 1 tsp. garlic powder (or 2 cloves garlic, minced) 1 1/2 tsp. rice wine vinegar (or cider vinegar, but rice is great!) Can add some ginger, hot pepper and lime juice if you want it with more kick. Combine to for a smooth sauce. Pour over pasta and sauteed vegetables. Saute an onion and a green or red pepper at the very least for this pasta. You could add broccoli and many other veggies if you are a veggie lover like me. Can also add pork, chicken or tofu. Serve over pasta--lo mein noodles, or any other shape of pasta you like, or rice pasta or buckwheat pasta. Garnish with chopped roasted peanuts and cilantro or parsley if you like it. Frozen Banana Treats (these are GREAT to make with kids, and are at least a little bit on the healthy side with milk and peanut butter providing protein) 1 large banana 3/4 cup chunky peanut butter 1 1/2 cups milk 1 TBLSP sugar 5 oz. chocolate chips Blend banana, peanut butter, milk and sugar in blender. Put chocolate chips in the bottom of 6 oz. wax cups, pour banana mixture into cups and freeze. Add popsicle sticks after about 1 hour so they will stand upright. Yummy!

jadeite- I'm not tricia, but will help you out with an answer. Two tablespoons of powdered peanut butter reconstitutes into 2 T. of peanut butter. A #10 can (44-ounces) = approximately 89 two-tablespoon servings. If you are interested in purchasing it in #10 cans, Emergency Essentials (beprepared.com) has it discounted several times a year and they also give a discount for purchasing multiple cans. A 44-oz. cans (89 - 2 T. servings) costs 38-cents per oz. Emergency Essentials also has a smaller, 12-oz., container. A nice size to give it a try. You might want to look for a powdered peanut butter product called PB2 to give it a try in a smaller amount (6.5 oz. jar). Check Amazon.com or Netrition.com, they often have PB2 discounted from these sources. Heehee...Jelly. Yes, I actually thought of a raspberry jelly color! I never considered chocolate. Sheesh...I was so obsessed with that stupid Prelude color. We actually used the PB in my DD apartment, and had an accent wall in a gorgeous mocha color and everyone loved it. I think a color in that family will be perfect! I forgot to mention that the closet door will be a white bifoldm so going with the white door would probably be better than in PB. Thank you so much for the idea! Now, one more question...floor molding...white or get the 1/4 round that matches the laminate floor? Also, the ceiling has molding, should it also be white (celing) or PB (wall)?

I can't remember the store name, it was kinda like a World Market, in Burbank way back in the 60's that I first bought grind your own PB. DD is almost 50 now and she always wanted to go to the PB store when she was about 4 years old.

When I was a kid, there was a Planter's Peanut shop in downtown Trenton. They ground peanut butter there. I don't know when they started making peanut butter, but the company has been around since 1906 and the store I'm talking about was doing it in the 1950's.

Coconut, I remember going to the Planter's Peanut store on the boardwalk in Atlantic City NJ in the early 1950's. They had a peanut butter machine at that store too.

Oh yeah Ruthanna. That's right. They had them down the shore too. They had one at Seaside. I remember the one at Atlantic City. Makes me think of the Steel Pier and the diving horse.
