Guessing game: Roof for a modest 1840's rural Italianate house?

We may be restoring an 1840's Italianate house that has had a number of changes that removed historical detail.

There seems to be no record or evidence of the original roofing materials, and when we reroof, we want to do so with either something that is historically authentic, or that at least LOOKS like it's historically authentic but is much more affordable to install and maintain (such as composite roofing that's designed in the pattern of wood shakes or slate, for example).

But here's where the guesswork comes in, and where some people with more knowledge might help.

What is the most likely roofing material for a modest Italianate house built inthe 1840s in a rural Mid-Atlantic area, about 100 miles from any major city, as the residence for a local mill owner?

I'm guessing wood shake or metal, since slate would have to be imported from far away and would have likely been cost prohibitive. The family was well off by local standards but still much more middle class than wealthy, and there is no evidence of expensive house details (fancy windows or super ornate interior woodwork, for example) that characterize houses built with a larger budget.

What's your guess, and the reason behind your guess?
