Beautiful!!...I can almost taste it! No ripe crab apples here....yet...I hope I find at least enogh for one batch of jelly.

That IS beautiful. I used to make crab apples but the tree got destroyed when the state made some new access roads into the National Forest.

Of course, it was on THEIR property, but still. I miss it.

Looking good clair! I love the look of the apple jelly.,,,may just have to try some this fall.

I have never tried canning, but that picture makes me want to try. My mom jumped into the processed food movement and I only remember her canning tomatoes one time :) I am recently retired and have the time to learn new things ... so is it difficult ?

Ohiomom, absolutely worth trying..and it's not difficult at all. Once you get the basics down, it opens up awhole lot of paths and things to try!

Thanks, like with most things I attempt, I will probably do some reading. Any suggestions on what I would need to buy ? I will probably not attempt veggies, but I would really love to can some jellies/jams/preserves for baking.

First step... buy the Ball Blue Book. It will cover the basics and has many good recipes.

Beautiful jam and jelly, Clair!

I find making jelly a lot more work then jam. You have to cook the fruit and then strain it overnight, then you cook the juice with the sugar and add certo to jell.

The Crab Apple Jelly is gorgeous!

There are several large Crab Apple Trees growing on our local high school grounds and they are all usually full of apples. I've been tempted to bring my ladder and pick a bucket full. I love Crab Apple Jelly and have not had any in years.

okay, i always thought crabapples were for the birds and any other animals that wanted to eat what dropped from the branches, not human consumption.

what does crabapple taste like? i have been thinking of moving and tuesday i went upstate and saw this most magnificient house and on the front lawn there was a crabapple tree. i said i wanted to cut down if i purchase the place LOL maybe i need to rethink this.

i canned an assortment of jams/jellies last month and used them as party favors for my g-babe's birthday party (get it - first jam? LOL) everyone loves getting homemade jellies, you can never go wrong.

Claire you don't add certo to crab apples to get it to jell....it does it automatically....Nor to grapes, nor apples, nor gooseberries and currents, nor cranberries....

Dh and I picked chokecherrys in a nearby park and I made 7 quarts of jelly. I made the juice too concentrated this time. I will make it more dilute in the future.

I would love to make raspberry jam but don't have any bushes of my own. One of my neighbours is pretty weird, she grows raspberrys in the back alley but leaves them to rot rather than let anyone else enjoy them.

I hope to make crab apple jelly too but again I have to ask my neighbour if I can have some of hers. Fortunately its a different neighbour. Most people around here leave the crabapples for the squirrels.
