I don't think I could stand knowing that my dirty underwear is in some garbage out there. LOL I even clean worn out undies before I throw them away at home.

I have a friend who was going on a motorcycle trip with then SO. He informed her that she wouldn't be able to buy gifts and souvenirs on the trip. She packed all the old clothes that she would need and then proceeded to throw them away along the way. When returning she had all her souvenirs and gifts but no clothes left but the ones on her back when they got home.

I've never heard that one before! I wouldn't do it because I don't like wearing old underwear, if it's old it means it's got holes or is saggy, and it wouldn't be comfortable. But when I went to London last year I brought washcloths (facecloths) because I had heard that there would be none in th hotel room (and there weren't). I didn't want to keep wet cloths in my suitcase so I brought old raggy ones and threw them out after each use.

I do that the underwear trick too. Nightgowns get tossed too.
If I am going somewhere that is cold, I'll take old tee shirts and layer them under a nice shirt or sweater. I bring the nice one home and dump the tees. HUbby laughs at me but it is nice to have space for souveniers.

I wouldn't want to throw used undies in a hotel trash can, so I doubt I would ever do that. Undies don't take up much room anyhow.

When my DD went to Australia, some of the chaperons said they would buy used thrift store outfits at home and then after wearing would leave them for the hotel staff. They said the cleaning girls were so happy to get them. That would free up their suitcases for souveniers. I'd be more apt to do this, although I'd probably like the outfits too much to leave them behind.

Great idea-bring old raggedy underwear and throw it away as you wear it! Terrific! I once went on a trip, but didn't have a light jacket with me. I went to a Salvation Army store at my destinatioon, bought a very cheap windbreaker, used that for the entire trip . Tossed it when I was done.

The reason I throw my underwear out is NOT to free up room in my suitcase, it is because I don't like to carry around dirty underwear for 2 weeks.

I have no problem throwing them in the hotel trash, that is what a trash can is for.

Can't you put them in a plastic bag if you don't wash them in the sink? I'm going to Germany and France this summer and bought a small clothesline in case we don't find a laundramat for a day or so. That way I can hand wash a few things and hang them to dry overnight.

The last thing I would want to do when travelling is washing clothes and hanging them out to dry.

I like the idea of throwing out the undies, less of a hassle. Will be doning that on my next trip.

Well, I can't afford to throw out 3 1/2 weeks of underwear or any clothes for that matter. What a waste that would be.

Since we racked 47 nights in hotels last year, and are on target to do about the same this year....tossing away hundreds of dollars of underwear away every year just doesn't make sense.

I guess if you can afford it...

I've been doing that for a while now too. And no, fer cryin out loud, it's not throwing hundreds of dollars of underwear! Sheesh, where do you buy your underwear? LOL

The point was to bring old worn out stuff that's on it's last legs (no pun intended) that you're ready to toss anyway, but we all know still winds up in the laundry getting cleaned and once cleaned, well, might as well wear it one more time!

I also bring the ragged t-shirts that are worn under a shirt anyway so nobody sees it, get one last use and pitch it. And if anyone wants my dirty underwear, they can have it! LOL Anyone want a gift box???

I also take things like the ends of the tubes of toothpaste and use up when I'm traveling. Can't see any sense to buying "travel size" that costs as much and sometimes more than a full sized bottle or tube!

And no, I'm not one to wash things in the room and hang them to dry. When I'm staying in a hotel I don't care for it to look like 1940s New York skyline! At that rate, I'd go to a laundromat. But prefer to avoid it if possible.

I wouldn't want to have 2 weeks of dirty laundry in my bags either- I can stand 2-3 days, but then I start getting a 'yucky' feeling- even if everything dirty is in a plastic bag. I just use the motel/hotel laundry- they are usually very clean, inexpensive...and then I feel clean... I can usually do 2 loads at once, as there are usually 2 washers/dryers. It takes 1 hour total- easy to do while relaxing in the motel at night.

My husband and I travel frequently and have been to many countries. And the thought of wearing clothes that are clean and were mingling with the dirty underwear, frankly makes me shudder!! Yuck!
I don't know why anyone hasn't thought of using/having a marked 2 Gallon Ziplock bag for all your dirty underwear!! This way when your done with your trip or near laundry facilities you just open & dump it all in the washer! This is what I do and it works Perfectly Every time!!

Homemade, I do the same thing, 2 gallon Ziplock bags are great for that. Another thing I do is after I unpack, I use one suitcase for the dirty clothes. The clean ones, if any are left becomes wrappers for the souviners.

Each piece of my luggage has a plastic zippered section. I put my soiled laundry into the hotel's plastic laundry bag, and then into the zippered section.

I do prefer to take it home to launder, but on a long trip, I will use the hotel's self-laundry facilities or valet service.

Like arosegirl, on some trips, one of my bags often becomes the "laundry bag".

I don't do that... but I do carry several plastic grocery bags in my suitcase and stuff dirty underwear and socks in those.

No, I don't have dozens. I don't travel all that much and have never had a trip where I'm gone for months on end. I use them when I have them, and using them when I travel is a good time to make use of them. For overnight stuff I use a plastic grocery bag. Camping trips are an especially good time to make use of this technique.

We travel as a family. I keep a big fabric drawstring bag about the size of 13 gallon trash can in my suitcase. We put the dirty laundry in there to keep it away from the clean clothes. We pack about 3-4 days worth of clothes and then wash at a hotel or laundromat as needed. It's planned out as a part of our schedule.

If we are traveling someplace where we don't have access to laundry facillities, I try to wash things far enough ahead so they will be dry when I need them. Damp clothes are awful.

I used to trave by myself from Texas to Washington State, via plane to Seattle or Spokane, and drove the rest of the way by car to my destination. I always stayed in small motels that had fridge, coffee, and a microwave in the room. I would usually be gone 1-2 weeks on these genealogy trips. I packed very little, one carry on case max. A couple of pair of jeans, or sweats, T-shirts and underthings. I always would stop in town at the $1 store and get a fork spoon and knife, a plate, toiletries, and any other daily personal items. Then on to the store for groceries. Next day on to the thrift store for any extra clothing I might need depending on the weather. I would do one load of laundry wherever I could, and then at the end of my trip leave it all for the girls that keep my room clean for the trip along with a basket of fruit and candy, and any left over food, with a thank you note. They loved it and always took good care of me.

I always hand wash my undies and socks while I'm in the shower, and dry them in the bathroom overnight. One set of underwear doesn't look too untidy.

I have traveled a WHOLE lot. Minimalist by bicycle, quite minimal going overseas, and now here in the US, I usually carry only one suit case here too.

I find jeans are not very good travel clothes. If you feel the need to get them washed, you need a laundromat, cause they take forever to dry. I travel with clothes that dry easy, and I always wash every night. No dirty clothes to wonder what to do with. I also used to take old underwear along, and discard towards the end of my trips. But now as I travel more, there isn't enough "old" anymore.

The only time I break my wash every night rule, is when I am at my daughters houses. There I have a fabric laundry bag, and when ever they do laundry I add what I want washed.

My step mom taught me, to use pantie liners the first couple of days. Then after the third day, you wash your panties. :)
