Snacks for Outdoor Movie night?

We're having a few friends over Friday night for an outdoor movie to be screened on the back of the house. It will be after dinner, so although one family will be around for dinner, I think I'm just going to order some pizza for them and make a salad.

So, snacks for the movie:

Popcorn (duh)

Gummibears, raisinettes, malted milk balls and other stuff to mix in with the popcorn.

Licorice

Fruit salad (I thought of kabobs, but there are some not-so-well-behaved kids on the list and I think sharp sticks might be a bad idea)

Chocolate covered popcorn

Beer, wine, soda

What else? Single serve ice creams? Popsicles?

I'd like something clever but elegant for the grown ups. Keep in mind I can't go back and forth too much to the house because the kitchen is on the back of the house where we're showing the movie and turnign the lights on will be distracting.

Can you make your popcorn cauliflower? Sleeper hit potential, maybe.

Not surprising, but roasted flavored nuts are always awesome. Vanilla almonds and cinnamon almonds are my new favorite snacks.

Wasabi peas.

Roasted chickpeas.

Sweet potato fries with apple chutney (pureed) for dipping. (They could be roasting during dinner and pulled out hot for the beginning of the movie.)

I think you need more salty stuff....
Does the movie youa re showing suggest any sort of theme? And sort of clever movie themed snack?

Since Pennsylvania has the largest per capita consumption of both pretzels and dried beef (the type sliced from dried and smoked beef round, not the sliced "flaked and formed" loaf type like Budding), I often make this dip when I have to take a football snack to represent the Philadelphia Eagles. BEEFY PRETZEL DIP 8 oz. cream cheese, softened to room temperature 3 Tbs. crumbled blue cheese 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 2 to 3 tsp. horseradish 1/8 tsp. ground black pepper 1/4 cup finely chopped dried beef 1 bag of pretzel sticks In a medium bowl, combine cream cheese, blue cheese, Worcestershire sauce, 2 tsp. horseradish and pepper until smooth. Taste and add the additional teaspoon of horseradish, if needed. Stir in dried beef. Refrigerate until 30 minutes before the game; then remove to let dip come to room temperature. Serve with pretzel sticks for dipping. Makes about 1 cup Note: Recipe can be doubled. A 3-oz. package of dried beef yields approx. 1/2 cup + 2 Tbs. of chopped meat.

Oh, to hell with you all. Breakfast: Espresso & Reese's cups Location: On the front porch. Lunch: Oh, yeah. I should eat something. Location: Anywhere I happen to be. Dinner: Buy (ok, mostly sneak) it at the restaurant. Location: The break room. On the day off, Grill a big fat steak and drink wine. OK, round it off with some mashed taties. Location: Porch, couch, whatever. Note to self: Move building crap off dining table. Home after work: More wine, maybe more Reese's cups. No Reese's cups? Ok, settle for some cookie dough. Location: Flat on my back on the couch until I crawl my tired but to bed. Exercise: You walk and smile for 10 hours at a time when you would love to strangle that awful 10% of the guests who could use a good, vigorous enema instead of Fried Chicken -- extra nakkins & summa dat hot sauce. You got any Brayed? You shud gimme dis free. I saw a fly on the wall. Ober dare. Walk away........ Who needs a kitchen, anyway? Isn't that what most people's coffee tables are for? Except those of you with those annoying and frightening little people creatures, of course. Oh - BTW. I just moved my fridge to the mudroom. LOVE IT. Visually it's more space in which to do nothing but nuke milk for my espresso.

Most of us over the age of 65 have never had to worry about what we served when entertaining except for shellfish - perhaps a severe peanut allergy but I only know one man with this. He simply never eats anything prepared in anyone's home as he knows they probably have used peanuts or peanut butter in their mixing bowls/skillets. I usually just dealt with the shellfish by never serving it unless I absolutely knew my friends ate it. But when we were younger and had and went to lots of dinner parties, no one was on any "special diet" - no gluten-free (not sure anyone had even heard of gluten outside a home ec class!), no paleo, no Mediterranean, no vegans or vegetarian. When I was married 40 years ago, my matron of honor did not eat red meat at the rehearsal dinner, but she found plenty of other things on her plate and did not go hungry. I think she was the first person I knew who didn't eat red meat. If one has never learned to cook for such diets, it's pretty hard to learn, especially when entertaining. I never serve a recipe I have not prepared multiple times before. At my age, just preparing a meal for others is not easy and trying to figure out what is "allowed" is frankly just more than I am up to doing. I wonder how we all survived all those dinner parties in the past. Have people's bodies really changed that much? I don't remember anyone ever becoming ill and we all knew one another pretty wells.

These are tasty if you have everything on hand. I've made these many times to serve with a cream cheese roulade, but that's for another time than now! Blue Cheese Shortbread 3 1/2 oz. crumbled blue cheese (about 1/2 cup) 3 T. unsalted butter, room temp. 1/2 cup flour 1/4 cup cornstarch 1/4 tsp. kosher salt 1/8 tsp. ground black pepper 1/3 cup walnuts, finely chopped Blend blue cheese and butter in food processor until creamy. Add flour, cornstarch, salt, and pepper. Using on/off turns, process until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add walnuts and process just until moist clumps form. Gather dough into ball. Flatten into disk. Wrap dough in plastic and refrigerate until firm, about 1 hour. Preheat oven to 325°F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Roll out dough between sheets of plastic wrap to 1/8- to 1/4-inch thickness. Remove top sheet. Using a small cookie cutter (2 1/2" is good), cut out cookies. Transfer to prepared baking sheets. Gather dough scraps and reroll to cut out additional cookies. Transfer to prepared baking sheets. Bake until golden brown, about 20 minutes. Transfer to rack and cool. (Can be prepared 3 days ahead. Store in airtight container at room temperature.)

Link to a recipe. Not T&T but looks easy and yummy. (Although I might put cinnamon and sugar on the fries instead of salt. They're good both ways.)

I would add some chip type of snacks: potato, tortilla, etc.
A very easy but attractive mix is yellow and blue tortilla chips mixed tougher. Have some salsa. Or do a huge platter of nachos.

Amanda, that recipe looks amazing. I LOVE sweet potato fries. Great idea.

I'm not sure what movie we'll be watching. I'm going to the library today to see what's available. I'm thinking Raiders of the Lost Ark or something similar. I want something heavy on action, but not super violent. Not too much dialog. Most of the kids will be boys from 7 - 11, with some toddlers and girls mixed in.

Yes, you're right about salty. Chips or chex mix or something. I love the sweet potato fries in pretty paper cups with dipping sauce. I wonder if I have time for that. Nuts are also great - I just have to wait and see if the family with the nut allergy kid is coming. If not, I'll definitely add mixed nuts.

I think you should make it easy for yourself and treat this like a picnic, so you don't have to run into the house.
Set up some coolers in the yard w/ ice for the drinks.
Peanuts in the shell is a fantastic idea! Margaritas in a big pitcher w/ nachos! Or Pina Coladas and a carved watermelon with all sorts of skewered fresh fruit for the elegant adults. Also Chocolate covered strawberries.

Michael Chiarello (I know I spelled it wrong.) had an episode last year that was about an outdoor movie showing..
I'll head over to Foodtv and see if it's still there.

okay found it..but I was thinking there was more to the food than this...

Foe something sweet and easy how about ice cream sandwiches? Frozen grapes are also a huge hit here and pretty good on the healthy scale.

For salty - I love Chex Mix! Also, how about piggies in a blanket, tortilla roll-ups, the spicy candied pecans that someone posted a few years ago or the blue cheese pecan around a grape thingies?

And definitely no skewers, toothpick, little swords or anything else that can become weapons!

Popcorn, sliced apples and cheese with a drink. Was always a hit at our house with our kids, and still is at their homes with their kids.

Hey AM,
Nothing to contribute, but I was in your neck of the woods today. My sister just bought a home in Fairfield, which is only about 30 minutes from my summer cottage in Guilford (we're here through August). Actually, while I was there, I ran into the Trader Joes store on Black Rock and saw a delicious looking coffee popsicle. Now that would be fun.

Jo - you should join us for the movie! We aren't too far from Fairfield at all. In fact, I thought of you today as I took the kids to the Shelton Ice Rink for a sticks & pucks session. Also not too far from you.

We do this often we bought the huge blow up movie screen off Ebay....Party city has great papergoods for movie night theme . This year we have yet to do it because we are having major mosquito problems on Long Island this summer.
