Worst tasting snacks - ever!!!!

Rice cakes. No amount of sugar, vanilla and caramel can disguise the texture of cardboard. It must be an acquired taste.

Hmm.... I agree, though those Cocopops they pop and sell at Wegman's are right up there - taste like dust, at least to me, but my grandchildren like them. I can eat them with a really tasty hummus (artichoke and spinach, or artichoke and asiago dip). Maybe chocolate?

I don't know if they are even made anymore but there used to be snack cakes sold two in a pack, a questionable cream filling, & they were "frosted" with brown tinted candle wax. Horrible things.

Worst year ever???

olpea: I really don't have that much experience with peaches. I've only got fruit on one peach variety this year. I think peaches are a different beast than nectarine. They probably don't lose as much water through the skin. That shouldn't completely mask the water effects but might mute it. Nectarine are always sweeter on the tip than around the stem. Are peaches that way? Water loss through the skin might concentrate the sugars near the tip of the fruit. I think this may be involved on nectarines. Also fruit that is overly water stressed can be very high in brix but not taste sweet. I've seen this for certain on sweet cherries, 35+ brix and not even sweet. Not sure this would occur with peaches. You don't want so much stress that photosynthesis shuts down completely. I think this happened on a few of my second leaf trees this year. They still weren't up to competing with older trees for limited water, not rooted deeply enough. A $40-50 refractometer would educate over time.

Worst tomato year ever?

I've picked 2 BK (ripened inside) and 2CP, 2 Grandma Mary's (but 1 seems to be softening without really ripening), multiple Latah (but the plants aren't setting any more), and a 16 oz cup of cherries (off 10-11 plants - I forget now if I snuck an extra SS100 in). A few Chadwick's cherries that are too large for cherries (crossed, saved seed) but all have concentric cracking. Have Rutgers, BW, Rose de Berne on the vines (Rose de Berne looks esp. healthy and prolific), but haven't picked any and Grandma is loaded but not turning. Oh, picked a few Cosmonaut too just starting to blush, would have left them a little longer but I watered since we hadn't had any rain since those 5 inches 10 days ago, and I didn't want them to crack. Still nothing off the Burpee plants but those and the volunteer cherry are the healthiest looking though they get less sun. Rose and SS100 don't look bad, neither do the leftover BW, Rutgers, CP I put in the row with my beans, but the CV, some of the Grandmas, and everything in 1 long row (2nd year growing tomatoes there, maybe I should have rotated) looks pretty bad. I thought I saw stem lesions on 1 Monday, didn't get out there yesterday to pull it (back to school shopping) but will have to do more cleanup today - may pull the entire row (app 50 plants). I'm afraid it may be late blight since it's been reported in the state. I thought the bush beans were about over (and hadn't been very productive) but they were full on Monday, the pole beans are coming in too, so after watering (by hand) I spent a couple of hours picking green beans and edamame, no time to clean up the tomatoes. The yellow squash and cukes are doing well this year - zucchini not so much (SB and SVB). But I only sold 1 lb of green beans, 2 yellow squash, half my cukes and no edamame last week at market, so I'm not even going back until (unless) I have tomatoes. This may be the year that puts me out of business. Everybody wants tomatoes and corn, and I don't grow corn.

whats the worst recipe you've ever tried?

Wonderful thread, Bobby... see what your Banana Bread experience has spawned. Glad to know I'm not alone. My brothers, I'm sure, would have several "bizzo meals" to mention, as I like ingredients more exotic for their tastes (like mushrooms in my spaghetti sauce) but I think my worst was the first I served my now DH... One of my brother's had given me a variety of flavored vinegars asa Christmas present... one a "Salsa Vinegar" that I'd never tried before. I made a vinaigrette dressing, and the new BF (now DH) had forced down several bites of his salad (good boy, taught to clean his plate) before I got to my first one. One bite and I immediately removed the salad bowls from the table with "you do not have the eat this!!" It was HOT, and awful... DH says it took several more meals before he trusted that I really can cook!! LOL

Almost the worst workmanship ever.

Almost the worst workmanship is right. With "almost" being the operative word. Former house had lots of do-it-yourself work by people we bought from. Do picture, if you can, pieces of original Victorian molding hacked off to make room for various "improvements." Cheap outdoor lighting fixtures in the house. Indoor-outdoor carpeting in several bedrooms. The latter would not have been so bad if they hadn't hammered several billion carpet tacks into the original wood floors. I could go on. But why bother when I can comment on the current house.... Some stair treads on basement steps so narrow (missing half the tread) that you had to turn your feet sideways to get down some of the steps. (They apparently kept their "wine cellar" in the basement, and they also apparently made great use of the thing. The mind boggles.) A wire above one of the LR fireplaces so thin that, according to our electrician, we probably would have started a fire by plugging in even a vacuum cleaner in the outlet. Better yet (?) - a LIVE wire in a cabinet under the kitchen island. Imagine pushing a metal pot back there.... I could go on, but again, why bother. After all, we don't have all day here. Actually, now that I'm looking at pal's pictures again, I wonder whether the owners of our former house moved back to the area and took up construction work. It sure does look familiar.

I don't mind rice cakes, at least some flavours. My favs are buttered popcorn and white cheddar. The plain ones, or brown rice are fine topped with tinned tuna or salmon for an easy lunch. The apple cinnamon ones are truly vile...

A co-worker brought a box of pre-packaged "chocolate croissants" in to work to share. I thought "It has chocolate, how bad could it be?" The "croissant" portion has the consistency of a hot dog bun, although much sweeter, and the "chocolate" filling is more akin to chocolate pudding. I couldn't even finish chewing the first bite. Bleah!

On the plus side, the last few from the box have been sitting atop the office microwave for a couple of weeks, and I'm sure they are every bit as good as when the box was first opened.

I agree with you on the rice cakes. Even my dog wouldn't eat them. Another nasty snack is soy nuts. Also can break your tooth.

I don't know what they're called, but those packages of orange-colored crackers filled with peanut butter that you find in vending machines(usually in the middle of the night at rest area when you're on a road trip and starving and they're the last things in the machine).

Soy nuts- those things are loud! I was eating them in a movie theater one time and a guy tapped me on the shoulder. "Can you chew a little quieter, please," he asked. "My girlfriend's PMSing." I looked over her and shook the box, I just couldn't resist. But they were loud- and I did fear for my teeth. Also not tasty enough to be worth a tooth chip. And yes, rice cakes are just dreadful.

I agree on the rice cakes, although with enough peanut butter they're elevated to barely edible. One of my bosses years ago said they were "like eating compressed air".

I don't care for soy nuts either but the worst snack I ever had was a "sesame candy" that Elery bought at the Asian market in Ann Arbor. He loves sesame, I tolerate it, but he stuck one of those things in his mouth and promptly spit it back out. Of course, that meant I just had to see how bad it was. It was bad, extremely sweet yet rancid. Ewwww. I don't know where it came from because I couldn't read the package, so it was my own fault, LOL.

Actually, one of the worst lately was a Hostess chocolate cupcake. I don't remember them being dry and tasteless, or the frosting leaving that slick of tallow in my mouth. Maybe they used to be better, but if Bud ever offers to share with me again I'll politely tell him "no thank you"!
