Pal, I love it! You didn't tell us you were interested in the circus fun house motif when you were shopping for a new place. Love the ceiling detail with its dimension and shadows special effect. Especially love the flaring pocket door molding cleverly offset by the skinny molding on the right. Love the way special attention is given to the grout emphasizing that row of tiles on the right. How thoughtful to provide you with your own little speed bump. Salvador might not love it as much were he able to see the tribute as they did not quite capture his unique perspective, but thanks for sharing the homage!

Although..... the tile in our family bathroom is the same as yours and was installed even worse by the p.o.. I can't wait to have it ripped out and replaced, but that is the next reno after we recover from this one. Our master bathroom was uglier, so that went first....

There was a point where it was worse: new subway tile was on a different vertical plane and a different spacial plane from front to back than the old subway tile from the previous powder room, I don't know how they would have had it meet in the middle. I was interested to see the polygonal resolution to that but they gave up, and put in bead board.

Wow. Is the second pic a kind of attempted trompe-l'oeil version of molding? Is it actually just white paint on a 45 degree section of the wall?

We did the trompe-l'oeil attempts when we repainted for the renters. The seller had had everything painted in one color and this particular area had one patches of the one color in various finishes all over the place (semigloss on walls, flat on trim, etc.)

So we just tried to give it some semblance of where the trim was supposed to be instead of where it really was, or wasn't.

I have visual disturbances before I get a migraine. If I had to look at the door every day of my life I would suspect that I had a migraine coming every day of my life.

You should install a fun house mirror on the wall next to the door. The gc was kind enough to start a fun house theme for you, go with it.

Our house was a labor of love, built as a man's dream home back in the 1970s from BH&G plans. Building codes out in our patch of the woods were sketchy at best. It's not going to collapse, but things like finish, symmetry and taste were not highly regarded by the gentleman. I can feel your pain.

I bet I know who is doing the work, , , or lack of. I can just picture it now. A couple of guys parked around the corner to smoke a "little" something for lunch no less. Then, they come back to the project and admire their work. After all, they are "master craftsmen". Can't you just imagine one guy ask the other . . . "hey - how do you think this looks together?". "Dude . . . . that is AWESOME!" I'm not saying you can't do a good job under the influence of something or other, I'm just saying who ever did that may have had too long of a lunch break. Ohhhhh did I just say that?! Lol It will all come together nicely I'm sure.

Oh my God this hit me in such a silly way. I feel like it's every house I've ever bought. They mickey-moused a lot in my homes too. But I was laughing and crying looking at your pics.

My handyman brothers says there are four things that keep him in business: termites, water damage, poor workmanship, and a woman who changes her mind!

Almost the worst workmanship is right. With "almost" being the operative word. Former house had lots of do-it-yourself work by people we bought from. Do picture, if you can, pieces of original Victorian molding hacked off to make room for various "improvements." Cheap outdoor lighting fixtures in the house. Indoor-outdoor carpeting in several bedrooms. The latter would not have been so bad if they hadn't hammered several billion carpet tacks into the original wood floors. I could go on. But why bother when I can comment on the current house....

Some stair treads on basement steps so narrow (missing half the tread) that you had to turn your feet sideways to get down some of the steps. (They apparently kept their "wine cellar" in the basement, and they also apparently made great use of the thing. The mind boggles.) A wire above one of the LR fireplaces so thin that, according to our electrician, we probably would have started a fire by plugging in even a vacuum cleaner in the outlet. Better yet (?) - a LIVE wire in a cabinet under the kitchen island. Imagine pushing a metal pot back there....

I could go on, but again, why bother. After all, we don't have all day here.

Actually, now that I'm looking at pal's pictures again, I wonder whether the owners of our former house moved back to the area and took up construction work. It sure does look familiar.

Simply put, some people shouldn't be in the construction business.

OMG, the idiot workers who 'repaired & skim coated the plaster' (huge euphormism) in my house must have moved to your area! The work looks susrprisingly similar although yours does have more of a fun-house quality. I had 2 door ways that were within an 1" of a corner & they filled in the space with plaster, making the wall flush with the trim. Several other places needed wall board to fill in large spaces of missing plaster - the patches weren't brought flush with the existing wall & set 3/4" behind the rest of the wall. Thankfully, they were not allowed to do any carpentry. Geniuses like these should not play with tools!
