You're not alone...it wasn't a great season here either, or a lot of other places, weird weather being the cause. Here we had a lot of rain and wind, almost constant thunderstorms, and cooler than normal temps. I'm still waiting for the last of my greenies to blush. The small number of toms that did ripen on the vine weren't as tasty as the previous year's toms. Still, they are better than the store bought ones. Here's to next year!

I can't complain about the cherry tomatoes, but the squirrels dined on ALL the other varieties earlier in the season. However, the squirrels have moved onto other plunder, and I find that my paste varieties have green tomatoes that are not being touched now (knock on wood). The only problem is that these are still green. It's almost October for Pete's sake! Hoping to get some of these paste tomatoes for my sauces! Nothing like homemade pasta sauce.

Absolutely agree with Drcindy.Worst season ever. Only productive tomatoes I grew this year were/are Supersteak and Matina

For those of us in the east, it was just the opposite. We had tremendous heat, enough rain for good growth but not too much to encourage early blight and the tomatoes were absolutely the best I've seen in many years. The weather is still quite good and the tomatoes just keep on producing.

The summer of 2009 for those of us in Vermont was like the one you just experienced, with cool, sunless rainy weather. Miserable.

Worst season here also in CA. This is the coldest summer I have ever experienced. I planted twice the number of plants as last year and got about half as many tomatoes. Some are just starting to ripen now in late September!

Up here in the swamp lands, the fruit was early, but WAY TOO MUCH RAIN... Its like it never ends. Another 4 inches the past 24hrs. I had serious splitting issues and a lot of disease. No problems with lack of heat or humidity this year. Last summer was cold, but i still had a lot of tomatoes. I think even a "cold" summer in the midwest is still plenty warm for a tomato (as long as its not too rainy).

i second that, drcindy! first time for me to have still green tomatoes in almost all of the 12 varieties i have in late september. some are already splitting, have to save those blushing tomatoes before i lose them to molds and cracking. i usually pick and can tomatoes mid-august, but now, i am just starting to get a few reds here and there this september... so frustrating!

This is my first year growing tomatoes in Portland and my like all tomatoes grown in PNW are not ripening.

I have a tomato plant that black spots on the foliage and blacken branches. What should I do with my sick tomato plants and what to do with all the green cherry tomatoes?

I was told to cut off 12 inches from the top to quickly ripen - hopefully this weekend. I ended up with lots of green ones to sacrifice the bigger ones. Thanks much!

I had Late Blight in my garden for the first time ever; this was a cool and wet summer for us on the Prairies. I picked all my tomatoes green (as soon as I heard that LB was here). I managed to salvage about 1/2 my tomatoes...enough for 4-5 batches of salsa, anyway. The tomato plants were actually doing really well before they developed LB.

Same here on the coast in SoCal. I live in zone 10 a mile away from the beach and it has been a cold summer. My tomatoes have been hanging onto the vine and it is already the late September, they are still green and have not show any signs of ripening.

Yes, it waas bad here. My plants have given up the ghost, I'm sure. We've gotten only a handful of tomatoes, despite theere being LOADS of tomatoes that haven't ripened... and won't it seems.
Over the last week, things started to get really, really bad with the weather change.
One plant collapsed a little over a week ago. I picked everything I could off of it, hoping they would ripen inside. Nope.. they're turning brown. And mushy.
ALL of my cherry tomatoes have split open badly.

Earlier on I felt kind of bad about having grown my plants early under a hoop house. The summer was so cool that the plants didn't really do very well once the plastic was removed, and I thought I might as well have planted them later since the early start didn't seem to do much good. But now I think it was worth it after all, because it looks like most of the tomatoes I got will ripen before the plants die off. I wonder how well they would have done if the weather had been better...

But dangit those hillbilly fruit better ripen soon, or they're going to be a tragic waste.

I am one of those start too early people.
I usually have ripe ones in early june.

Only one plant out of 40 performed well. Stupice.
That's the only type I have had the performs year after year, no matter what the conditions.

I had a few off of other plants.
Legend, P20 Blue, Black Brandy wine. The rest, nothing.

Everyone I know in the PNW has had a similar experience this year.

My brother in mid CA is only now getting ripe tomatoes on a regular basis so we are not alone.

I just picked four very big Hillbilly tomatoes today. They aren't 100% ripe, but they are at least 50% ripe, so I figured I need to get them out of there before the cool weather this week starts to have its way with them. And I was originally thinking I would have these as a fun novelty around the end of August!

Agreed, it has been the worst season I remember.

I planted almost 60% more this year, and the total yields were 1/5th of what I harvested last year.

Many varieties died before producing a single mature fruit.

I am hoping the next tomato season in PNW will be better!

Same over in Eastern WA. Got my tomatoes planted kind of late too, since we had a frost warning after the usual Last Frost Date ;-*

Sungold didn't even do as well this year. Only one I could say produced a fair amount is 'White Currant'. Japanese Black Truffle was the only large sized tom that started producing in summer (hot flashes- nothing like what we normally have!), and maybe Black Prince. Just starting to get ripe fruit from my others.
Oh well....always next year ;-)

I may benefit from being a little more in the Intermountain West and a little less in the PNW. But then again, I'm trying to remember when the tomato patch has been beset with more weather problems than this season.

And, this was the year when I really made a commitment to having as many heirlooms as I could fit in.

The influence of the coast with the wind, clouds, cold, and rain lingering into summer wasn't so wonderful. The unexpected last frost caught me without enuf buckets to cover all the plants. The next time I have to use large pots, I just gotta remember to cover the holes, especially if there is a 10mph breeze! After those plants died . . . confusion reigned as replacements of different varieties were brought in.

I think I ended up with 28 varieties in the patch of 60+ plants . . .

Since those difficult May, June & July days, my garden has been blessed with a later than normal frost. It may come next week but I've certainly had a chance to get the fruit off the vines!

The cherries weren't terribly late in ripening and have done fine! My earliest slicer, Rainy's Maltese, ripened 2 weeks later than it did in 'o9 and that pretty much held true with the other large tomatoes. There's no question that the vines were stunted and less productive but, at least, they didn't play out in summer dryness or die in a September frost.

I was able to try some new varieties! It's good to know what can take a hit and still stay in the game.

Well, looks like 2010 was not the worst season ever in the PNW for tomatoes. Why? Because 2011 is even worse. I've got almost no fruit bigger than a golf ball, and some of my plants might be coming down with nasty diseases already. Man, sometimes I wish I lived in California...

We still have time and I haven't given up yet. I am at an all out war to prevent late blight or other infections. The plants are doing well though and are just now starting to set some fruit.

Such is the nature of our climate. Awesome for Peas, pumpkins, and Beats but crappy for tomatoes and peppers.
