Corner media console suggestions needed

I'm bleary eyed from leafing through catalogs and browsing online for a corner console for our 50 inch tv for the living room. We have 48 inches on two walls beside the fireplace. Alas, it seems that Pottery Barn had one last summer that might have worked, the Landon, but it is gone forever. I've checked West Elm, Room and Board, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, Ballard, Home Decorators and some furniture sites I had bookmarked (Gingko, The Joinery). And I've been checking eBay regularly.

Our taste is probably eclectic transitional; we have some cherry, teak, mahogany and probably tend towards the teak or natural cherry finished woods. Some furniture is Danish teak, some Shaker-ish so we like fairly simple lines. The photo is from just after we moved in last fall but does show the location I'm working with.

Currently the tv is on an antique gateleg table that we love. The sectional is gone, the chairs will be reupholstered to coordinate with the new sofa, the artwork has migrated, etc, etc. I would love some suggestions of other places to look! I've checked out the local furniture stores and so far, no joy there. Thanks for the help.

Can you be more specific on the measurements? You say you have 48 inches - I assume that is the space between the fireplace and the corner wall. But how much room do you have on the left wall where the windows are? If you are looking for a corner piece, you need that dimension as well, I think.

Seems like it might be easier to mount the tv on the wall on a pivoting holder, and get a regular console piece to sit against the wall below it for all the other electronics, etc.

My other question would be what is on that wall to the right of the opening from the dining area? Could the tv go on that wall instead?

I sympathize. Of all things, I particularly dislike looking at a "dead" TV screen (I call it the black hole). Our TV occupies a corner, too (not nearly as commodious as yours!) and I've accepted that our solution is going to be a custom built unit and believe me, it will have DOORS.

We have told ourselves that we are going to give it a year/two and see what the present flat screen/HDTV/digital requirement thing finally does before we make ANY move with respect to commissioning a piece of furniture.

I can't wait to see what interesting suggestions and thoughts you get on this question!

Hi, Thanks for the responses. I have white trim in my family room and no black. For that price, I would not want to paint it. And I am not sure I would be happy with the results. I had a custom (no cabinets - all from scratch) EC built for my basement by my carpenter. I love the way it turned out but I'm afraid to add up all it cost between labor, supplies (custom doors), etc, and painting. It was way over the $1400. It looks great but here is something almost perfect (only the color!). I'm trying to imagine the off white color in my room. I just repainted all the trim from bright white in my liv rm and dr to linen white (to better match that decor) for a small fortune by my painter. Not sure my DH would go for that again here. Promised it was ONLY those two rooms. The fr is one big open space with my large kitchen. Lots of moulding and lots of $$$$. Aaaargh! So disappointing!

I caution against a sectional in a small, oddly-shaped space because they are so limiting and because the corner seat is really wasted space. I also think I would try to get that the TV out of the corner, even if I had to run a long coax cable along the baseboard to get it to the long wall. Having it on the long wall will allow you to watch from the kitchen and bar stools as well. Here are a few iterations for you. I have no idea of the dimensions of any of these pieces. I suggest you tape your favored configuration out on the floor, then measure to see what sizes of sofa and chairs you can accommodate. Swivel chairs and swivel bar stools will give you the most flexibility.

I really like it, especially with your very 'airy' plant. All 3 objects give one the feeling of 'floating'. Like magic! It makes the oversized electronic, look like it's in a home setting. Very nicely done. Couldn't be any nicer. Now, look for all those with the giant 'entertainment with a bridge' armoires or wall shelving be putting them up on resale websites, so they can lighten the load in their tv rooms... LOL

I think a built-in or a console is fine. I think a console would likely be less expensive. Really, a built-in is going to be just the shape of a console. That is all you can fit. As far as option 2, Yes, you would have an issue with the sofa the way I am showing or with flipping the sofa with the chairs. Design is not always perfection and involves compromises. I suggest you might have to spend $ on something going forward -Is that a bathroom? If so, the door must swing out. If not, can you change the swing? -How a bout a new sofa that is more compact.? The width of the room is a matter of math. You have 155". 155-89=66. With the current sofa, that gives you a total of 66" for door swing for both doors. What is the total of door swing for both doors total?

Les917, I would love to be more specific! The walls are 48 and 54 inches; 48 for the left window wall and 54 for the fireplace wall. The diagonal measurement is 59 inches from the window trim to the edge of the brick hearth. The wall to the right of the opening is the only wall where we can put our buffet and china closet so that's a nonstarter. The peril of open floor plans is the lack of walls!

I had not thought of the pivoting wall mount and a regular console so that is definitely worth investigating. It would have to be a fairly heavy duty thing but I bet they are out there. Will it feel awkward for the tv to be at an angle and the console flat against the wall?

chelone, going custom is a possibility and, fortunately, we have an excellent cabinetmaker who did our cupboards. If my DH can finish his new workshop, he'd like to give it a go but that really puts it down the road a piece. Patience is not one of my virtues. VBG

Best Buy is one place that sells wall mounts. They can be kind of expensive if they are the articulating type that allow the tv to be not only tilted and turned, but pulled out for better viewing. Still may be a better solution that trying to find a cabinet that fits, or having one made.

What about this corner stand? It is a dark finish, which would balance nicely with the cabinet in the other niche by the fireplace. RTA piece, not solid wood.

Les917, thanks for the suggestions. I really appreciate the help! Alas, I realized as I moved some ottomans around that there is another aspect that I had forgotten -- where to put the Bose subwoofer that currently sits to the side of the table. It needs to be where the remote can operate it so I think, given the various needs, I'll talk to our cabinetmaker and see what he can come up with. There's always something isn't there? LOL
