Ballards Reston Corner Console

I would like to get a corner media console to update the tv in my small family room. This one is perfect, (corner, size, style, hidden components, great reviews) EXCEPT the colors available). I need brown, not black or cream. Anyone see anything similar at a quality furniture store? TIA

Les917, I would love to be more specific! The walls are 48 and 54 inches; 48 for the left window wall and 54 for the fireplace wall. The diagonal measurement is 59 inches from the window trim to the edge of the brick hearth. The wall to the right of the opening is the only wall where we can put our buffet and china closet so that's a nonstarter. The peril of open floor plans is the lack of walls! I had not thought of the pivoting wall mount and a regular console so that is definitely worth investigating. It would have to be a fairly heavy duty thing but I bet they are out there. Will it feel awkward for the tv to be at an angle and the console flat against the wall? chelone, going custom is a possibility and, fortunately, we have an excellent cabinetmaker who did our cupboards. If my DH can finish his new workshop, he'd like to give it a go but that really puts it down the road a piece. Patience is not one of my virtues. VBG

I don't think the iron piece or the clock bring the color and softness to the fireplace that needs to be there to balance it with the rest of the room. I am pretty sure this was discussed before, but have you considered applying some type of conditioner or finish to the stone to warm it up? You can see from your pix that it reads very grey and cold compared to the rest of the space, and I think warming that stone up will go a long way toward integrating it better. In fact, if you did that, you wouldn't necessarily have to worry about colorful art. Second, I think you really need to consider painting the fireplace surround, either in a black or an aged bronze look. The brass really doesn't fit the feel of the warm and cozy space you have created. I agree with those who have suggested you need to group things more on the top of the ec. Rather than a line of items making essentially another row around the top, having a couple of more substantial groupings will carry the eye through the space with more interest. Use some stacks of books in a couple spots to elevate the various pieces and add more color. Add pillar candles to the candleholders in a rich red to bring some color in and increase the visual height impact. I would also take one of the smaller green plants and tuck in the bird cage, with the door open and the plant spilling out. I would also look for a tall floor plant to place at the end of the entertainment center, down by the console table, to break up that solid wood panel there. You could also hang three small art pieces, one in each panel, to help bring the eye into the space rather than have it stop dead when it hits that wooden wall on the end.

Handy Guy is one of my favorite humans. He was unavailable for a little over a year in 2015 when he became an estate manager for some very fancy people with multiple homes in far flung regions. Gave it up after trying to keep up with home life and his poor dogs, as his required traveling time had more than doubled over the year. So excited to have him available again, literally could not have made this move without him. During the lockdown he was here daily for move in issues, wallpaper, pantry reconfiguration, new sinks everywhere, etc. etc. etc. When DH was hospitalized and I did not leave the hospital for months at a time Handy Guy was at our house once a week checking on all systems and keeping things up. DS2 was there but in school and just taking care of the dogs. We never needed our village more. Babyproofing now! Great idea Renovator Girl! I’ve been thinking solely of cribs and rockers for their room here and baby clothes. (WHY are baby sweaters so cute? Anybody?) We are still renovating downstairs bathroom and some choices … with baby in mind. I hear you about Forest Lawn, Mtn. From the looks of the size of your former house on another thread you have more extra furniture than anybody. Just keep in mind that you may have to pay your kids to take it, lol, or just show up with a moving truckful as they are settling into a new place and need it :-) The desk and blackboard are essentially the same width. I will be hanging the blackboard just a few inches above the hutch part so it will look like a single column of color on that wall. My goal with this room is to make DS and GF want to come and visit “their” bedroom, Nuts. I hope it works! Outside, has your desk been delivered? If so, is it as pictured? I appreciate the “tastefully masculine“ Jojoco. Some might disagree about the yellow and cream, but then again the GF needs to be taken into account and DS also still had his childhood teddy bear on the old bed after the move. Bunny, Let’s just saya future graveyard bedroom has not been ruled out. 😎

That is a beautiful EC, are you sure you could not use either of those two colors.

Worst case could you get the black one and paint it brown? I know it sucks about buying something new and paint it, but if none of the colors work for you ...

I'm suggesting the black to paint brown because it seems like it would be easier to cover than the cream, but either should work.

I love the design of that console. What about taking the picture and the design specs to a cabinet maker and seeing if he could build this in a color that you like for a similar price?

I've done this; fortunately, my brother-in-law does custom cabinetry and has been able to make things for me for the same price that furniture stores ask - and he still makes a profit. But, the furniture he makes would be solid woods (and MDF for drawers) rather than veneers and particle board from China.

Check with someone who is his own company so that you can avoid the overhead costs of the carpenter's rent, insurance, employee salaries, etc.

Just a thought.

Hi,

Thanks for the responses. I have white trim in my family room and no black. For that price, I would not want to paint it. And I am not sure I would be happy with the results. I had a custom (no cabinets - all from scratch) EC built for my basement by my carpenter. I love the way it turned out but I'm afraid to add up all it cost between labor, supplies (custom doors), etc, and painting. It was way over the $1400. It looks great but here is something almost perfect (only the color!). I'm trying to imagine the off white color in my room. I just repainted all the trim from bright white in my liv rm and dr to linen white (to better match that decor) for a small fortune by my painter. Not sure my DH would go for that again here. Promised it was ONLY those two rooms. The fr is one big open space with my large kitchen. Lots of moulding and lots of $$$$. Aaaargh! So disappointing!

I don't see why black wouldn't go just because you have white trim. I have black and other color furniture pieces and I have white trim.

Furniture doesn't have to match your walls/trim. If you were doing a built in I could see you might want to match things, but even then it isn't necessariy. My old old house had wood built-ins and white trim.

lyfia: I meant the off white wouldn't go as well with the white trim. Not sure I like the black as much as the off white. Anyone else see anything similar in brown? thanks!

I just ordered something extremely similar from an Amish Furniture store for about the same price, and I got to pick the wood species and stain\finish. I ended up getting Maple too Oak and painted would have made it just over 1200.

IDK where you live or your proximity to a store that sells custom furniture but there are other out of the box options, I would just hate to pay that much for something that you'd have to paint to make it what you are looking for.

(I in no way am Amish or work for a Furniture place)
