I think in the right setting it does have the potential to be a grandmothers's chair. In a eclectic or fun environment it would just be a comfy chair. It does look in good condition.

It's from craigslist. The woman who posted it said that it was just reupholstered for $900, but she's changing her decor from traditional to country. No plastic, kbmas0n--lol.

It looks extremely comfortable to me, but I was unsure of the lines. My setting is somewhat traditional, so rnmomof2 might be right that is would look grandmotherly in my LR. :)

This "neo-Victorian" child-free "nana" would LOVE to have it! (like I need more furnture!).

Oh, I think it's cute! Those older chairs have a lot of character, so if it would fit in your room, I'd say go for it. Doesn't look too matronly to me at all.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with granny chairs especially as they are so often super, super comfy. I may only be 37 but I sure FEEL like a granny most days so I gotta have that comfort! I'm working on finding some granny chairs myself - have a lead on a free wing chair, hope it's not too awful. LOL I think it's very cute - love the exposed wood. Go take a look, the worst that can happen is that you say "sorry, thanks for letting me look, but it's just not going to work in my home" and go home to continue the hunt.

I like it. I think the setting would dictate how grandmotherly it looked. Flanked by a doily-topped table, yes. Next to a worn wood bookshelf and cool lamp, no.

I love it! It looks deep & very comfortable. 1920? 1930? In the proper home it would look retro & cool. In the improper home it would look tired and out of place. What would you be surrounding it w/??

It could make a stunning accent or conversation piece in a traditional room. It would help if there were a few more elements in the room of the same period or feel. Magazine tables? Bridge or slag lamps?

I'm with mitchdesj, I think it does and I suspect you do too which is why you posed this question. It's hard to tell but it looks a little chunky and not graceful, however maybe in other pictures it will be clearly one or the other. The upholstry job appears to be very well done.

Well, I'll be honest. I don't think it looks like a grandma's chair--I think it looks like a grandpa's chair (only grandpa has dressed up in one of grandma's evening gowns)!

Seriously, I do like the fabric and it looks nicely upholstered but I agree that it is clunky and not very graceful. I will also add that I absolutely adore your home Organic, particularly the scale and proportion (I was recently admiring the lovely proportions of your fireplace and bookcases). I just don't see this chair in your home! I think a really graceful vintage wing chair with nice carved legs/feet would be more appropriate with your decor. I do seem them periodically on Craig's List.

LOL Teeda, grandpa's chair dressed up in one of grandma's evening gowns - now all I can think about is a cross dressing chair. Sorry Organic, I just can't get this image out of my head now.

reno_fan and elenkao: I agree. I'm just not sure that I have what it takes to accessorize it correctly. Noodlesportland has made a good point about the accent pillow, though. The other problem is that it might be too big for my LR. Damn these tiny houses!

teeda and sky: Great. Just great. How can I buy that chair now, when every time I look at it, I'm going to think "cross-dresser"?!?!? You guys crack me up. Teeda: thanks very much for the nice commentary on my fireplace and bookcases. The bookcases used to be a tad messy. Then, when I posted pics of my new sofa, a couple of diplomatic folks from the forum told me to clean up my act--lol. So, it does look much neater now, if nothing else. Thanks again. :)

As someone who only occasionally stumbles in here (but I am avoiding gathering the year end financial stuff) and a grandmother of 7...yes it does look like a grandma chair. And I think the reason is the coverins is so very at odds with the style of the chair, that it lools like a chair grandma had since the dark ages and re upholstered to "up date" it.
It's a neat comfy chair but the upholstery is not right for the style of the chair.

It's an interesting chair. It looks to me like the arms are too high for it to ever be comfortable. But............f it had another layer of an overstuffed seat cusion and a small pillow for your back, then it might work.

I love it! And since I'm a little over-stuffed myself -- I love comfy chairs! LOL!

To me, the "grandmother question" is really a cover for: Does the item look like I chose it, or does it look like someone passed it on to me and I didn't have anything else for the purpose?

Sorry, but my vote goes to the latter.

Okay, maybe I shouldn't have called it a grandpa chair, especially after looking at this one on ebay. (Or perhaps that's what grandpa looked like before he started cross dressing). Be sure to read the seller's description for a real laugh. But what a bargain, don't you think?

Teeda, I know you posted this as a joke - and LOL with that mass of duct tape -oh my. But you know I love the bones of that chair - it's got charm and a certain je ne sais quoi. I would knock down some of the poofiness of the arms to highlight the carving of that supreme man-chair.

This is a subject that is near and dear to my heart. I've been searching for a vintage living room chair for months and just found this one right before Christmas (will be re-upholstered as soon as I can find a rug for the room and can reliably pick a fabric):

The chair you posted is a nice chair, but it seems formal to me (as opposed to grandmother-ly). I found that most chairs of this vintage have a bit of wood on the arms, and it makes them seem uncomfortable or formal. Fully-upholstered is hard to find, and when you do find it, it's often quite wide for an old chair (this one is 37" I think). A while back, I did find a nice one on craigslist with a tight upholstered back and tight upright thin upholstered arms, but it was the wrong color and I passed on it because I was hoping to find something that I didn't have to reupholster. I'm still regretting that missed gem! So if you see one that has nice lines, I'd say snag it, regardless of the upholstery.
