Canada Day High Tea with Chase & "Himself"!

I'm finally getting around to processing and posting some photos of our June trip to Canada. We enjoyed a very special Canada Day celebration with Sharon & Clive.
Sharon was immensely helpful in planning our trip. Her suggestions of what to do and where to visit aided in making this a fantastic vacation. It was an extra special treat to have them break away from their house guests and drive all the way to beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake to spend the afternoon with us!

Sharon & Clive treated us to a delicious High Tea in our hotel. Then they became our knowledgeable tour guides for a visit to the fabulous Falls.

Just to keep this FOOD related-- The British afternoon tea was beautifully served and delicious. Our hotel, the Prince of Wales, is known for their elegant teas. The dining room even prepared a gluten free tea for me to enjoy. I wish I knew how they made the gluten free chocolate petit four, I would love to have the recipe! The tea selection was extremely diverse and each of us chose something different, all were excellent!

Our day was full- there was lots of conversation, loads of laughs and too little time. We hope to have the opportunity to spend more time together in the future!

Wow, you all look great. What a fun time. You and your hubs sure do get around. The goodies at the tea look scrumptious. Thanks for posting this. I always enjoy news about get-togethers.

And here is the Fermented Dills I mentioned. Optional refrigerator storage or processing. Also really good! Deanna Fermented Dill Pickles Â Refrigerated "Clausen" Type 1 Gallon Jar Pickling Cucumbers 12 Fresh Dill Flower heads, or 2 Tbsp Dried dill weed and 2 Tbsp. Dried dill seed 10 to 12 Cloves Garlic 6 to 8 Peppercorns 1/4 Cup Vinegar 1/2 Cup Salt 1 1/2 Quarts Water In 1 gallon jar add pickling cucumbers Rinse but do not wash the cucumbers. Add Dill flower heads or dried dill weed and seed, garlic, peppercorns, and vinegar. Dissolve salt in water and add to jar. Fill jar the remaining way with water. Add weight to keep cucumbers under brine. Fermentation sequence 1\. Clear brine Â no cloudiness for 1 to 3 days 2\. Cloudy brine with gas formation, 2\-3 days 3\. Cloudy brine Â no gas formation, 5 to 6 days Pickles ready to eat after 10\-11 days. Refrigerate pickles if you do not want to process them. To process the pickles: Fill clean, sterilized quart jars with pickles to within 1/2inch of the top. Wipe, seal, and process in a hot water bath for 15 minutes. Remove and place on towel in a draft free area. Let jars stand for 12 hours. Label and date. Store in a dark, cool area.

LindaC, I don't care where the artist lived, or why he painted anything. I just want to know if he will paint the cabinets. I didn't say it was fun painting cabinets, I said I was going to do it. I hate to paint and I hate to decorate even more than I hate to paint. I do like white. It's clean, it's easy and it goes with everything. Plus, I want to sell the house. I told Elery that if there was going to be any color, he'd have to choose it. Then the realtor informed me that most people don't want color, they want neutrals so they can cover them easily and choose their own colors. That's why they call it "realtor beige". the high point of tearing out that wall was finding out that under that butt ugly striped paneling was drywall, so I don't have to build another wall, just paint the one that is there. Well, that and getting rid of the wall that I hated. Striped blue, brown, gray and cream. Ugh. I'm excited about FINALLY starting to do something about getting these houses ready for sale, I just hope they sell quickly so I can move the heck out! eileen, I'd like the interesting little cafes, although I don't usually eat breakfast, it would be lunch for me. I like to wander off by myself too, but that drives Elery nuts, he's sure I'm lost or mugged or eaten by some animal that I just had to get a little closer to. But he's not interested in the seals or the sea turtles on South Padre. he wants to sit and relax and by gosh, I need to learn to relax too. It's both funny and annoying. I can tell you how cold the water was and how the sand felt on my bare feet and what the coffee was like and how many people had dogs and what kind. I notice the breeze and the smell of the flowers and iguana on the rocks and that the aloe is blooming. To me a thousand sunsets are all different but 152 paintings of people I don't know are all the same. I believe that nature is a far more talented artist than any human could ever be. I can't tell you about sunrises, though, because I'm not a morning person. (grin) So I'd LOVE to see Big Sur and Monterey and Point Lobos. And in about 3 days, I want to go home. Annie

Well not too many Canadians over here to keep me company so there was no celebration but I did have a lovely afternoon taking some new gardening friends over to visit another lady who has a wonderful garden chock full of every plant she can squeeze in. As it was a very warm and sunny day, she served us cool homemade lemonade as soon as we arrived. Then she passed around plastic bags, garden shears and straw hats to us all and we followed her through her amazing garden, snipping cuttings and pinching off seeds from dead flowers for us to take home. After an interesting hour or so of this she then served us tea and a Victoria Sponge cake she had made that morning. It was a truly enjoyable afternoon. Here are a couple of pics I took there. The first shows an exotic flower from the lily family and the second is a scented water lily from her pond. So although I wasn't in Canada, it was a wonderful day. I hope my fellow Canadians also enjoyed the holiday! Sorry about the rain over there Chase, but at least you got to have a party earlier! SharonCb

Remove the moss. Make sure the pots are up on pebbles or something in those trays because they may well be wicking water up to the roots, effectively drowning them (and you're probably watering too often anyhow, except maybe for the Fukien tea). To provide more humidity, trays must be much wider than pots - regular saucers are only to catch 'watering' water. Yellow leaves does usually mean things are too wet, so back off the frequency and let some of the soil dry between waterings. Junipers are outdoor trees, even in Canada, providing they have proper winter protection, so while it's too late now to put yours outside - it'll be shocked by the weather as it didn't go dormant in Nov. thru now gradually - if it's still alive in Oct. I hope you'll have researched how to take care of it then and have somewhere outside to put it. Do put all out in May if at all possible... and I know what you said, but that's why it's a bad idea to buy them before researching. If those pebbles are glued down, get them off entirely so you can see what's going on with the soil... There's no room here for an instant course in bonsai, never mind for 3 trees, so you'll have to do some learning on your own, though whether or not the trees will wait is another story. Very high light is extremely important for those trees, and you need to look at special fluorescents (not just "gro lites") for many hours a day right over their tops or they won't do well at all. Go look at Bonsai4me.com, look at www.bonsaihunk.com, evergreengardenworks.com for starters, and then go to http://ibonsaiclub.forumotion.com (terrific forum with experts and much more activity than here).

It was a great visit but it went by so fast. As it often is with CF get togethers it is as if we had known each other for years.

Well I guess that is true for Ellen and I when I think how long we have been posting here but the same was true for the "boys". Clive commented several times how easy it was to be with Dan....Good thing because Ellen and I never stopped yaking so they were on their own !!!!

Having met Sharon, Clive and Ellen, I'm envious, I'd love to get together with all of them again.

The tea looks delicious, but the company looks even better.

Canada is very gluten-free friendly. I was amazed at the number of hotels and restaurants that had it noted on the menu or had some type of bread available at a moment's notice. Most was Udi's frozen bread, nonetheless, I was appreciative!

Oh for those of you who have not "met" us before....... my DH, "himself" is on the far letft of both pics..the guy in the light pants ....Ellen has the long hair and gorgeous smile.... I have the wrinkled linen pants after three hours of driving and Dan , Ellen's' DH, is in the turquoise shirt...!!!

Edited to say my DH is on the left in the pics..........honestly I know which one is mine !!!!!

Well not real soon but it is our intent to go to NYC either this Fall or on our way back from Florida in April.....nothing definite yet but you are on my bucket list! LOL
