I did it! Took my Oasis apart , myself!

Ok, I'm not patting myself on the back...no I give credit to those who provide us with wonderful links etc..

Why did I do this? I've read so many stories about hidden mold and seen some posted pics, that I wanted to step outside the box and dive in!

My findings were not good or bad IMO.

Was there mold? Well some pink ick ,but nothing black.

However there was a buildup of mud underneath the drum itself.

The inner plastic liner had some pink ick on the sides,but it came off very easily. There was some brownish ick on the lint filter ( it reminds me of the one inside my dishwasher!) so I cleaned it up too.

I sprayed areas of rust that are showing up mainly underneath the lid next to the computer board. I used a soy spray that is similar to WD-40 but natural based.

Also cleaned up the holes to the water inlet. There was some calcium buildup on it so I scraped it off and used a toothpick to make sure the holes were clear.

The last thing I did was to partially clean out the water inlet hose tip (it's black rubber attached to a clear plastic hose). It had pasty brown ick in it.

My conclussion is that I'm very pleased with the results! I feel confident that I can keep an eye on the formation of ick or mold and clean it off before it does damage.

Did I take pics? YES, but I have to learn how to post them... Maybe that will be my next project! =)

It is amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it. We are often suckered into thinking we need a technician to do everything for us. I completely dismanteled and reassembled my Maytag Neptune washer and dryer and it was so simple once you get the courage to try it.

Knowing what engine etc. would be very helpful.... You are probably having trouble with the brush holders. Sometimes you'll see a "pin hole" in the holder where you can slide a thin wire (straightened paper clip) in to keep the brushes retracted enough to get them started. Sometimes a piece of string (sewing thread) can be used if the case is "vented" near the brush holders. Other times, a long, thin screw driver can be used. Just barely ease each brush SLIGHTLY over the commutator at a time. Just stay CALM and things go better.

You have taken on a real challenge. You are probably going to enjoy teaching these two people. Teaching can be rewarding, or it can be ... something else. Sometimes things go wrong and it can become really draining. I think it depends on the diligence of the student. When they are motivated, it doesn't seem like a chore at all. I am not a professional educator. I have simply taught many different people many different things that I know how to do. Another topic: My friend said she wanted to learn how to hand quilt. She has knitted and crocheted while I have sat next to her and hand quilted and hand appliqued. Many times. She was on vacation recently, so she was able to come to the LQS for the sit and stitch group. I thought we'd finally sit still and get down to business. I had everything ready to show her how to hand quilt. But instead, she got totally overwhelmed. She had to look at everything in the store. Then, she fell in love with a few of the samples, and said she wanted to make those. Small projects, but using completely different skills from hand quilting. She took the free instructions for these small projects. OK, she can tackle those projects AFTER she learns to hand quilt, I figured. Then she asked about classes. She bought a rotary cutter and a mat. Bottom line: We never got around to the hand quilting demo. She couldn't focus on one thing at a time. I'm not saying anyone else is necessarily going to be that way. But I did learn that sometimes, it is the teacher's job to chop off just a little piece of information, just ONE skill, and tell the student that s/he is going to learn just that one little bit before they try to learn anything else. So you might want to figure out what is the most basic skill. Start with that. Make it into a completed project. The smaller the better. Design something that doesn't take much time to make, but will teach all the necessary skills. Then proceed to something that uses those skills, plus new ones that the student can learn, a little at a time. Just an idea.

What do you know! My mom has a Neptune set, not the digital, but maybe 6-8 yrs. old ( how do I ck to see how old it is?) and she is complaining that sometimes the dryer squeaks when on and in addition said the washer makes some squeaking at times too! More often than not, but when she turned it on for me, no noise! She is on a very tight budget and alone, so I'd LOVE to try and fix it for her.
She doesn't want another set ( I thought about finding her a used F&P )but she says no.
Please direct me if possible on how to trouble shoot this.

The Neptune had a common squeek problem that just required replacing the motor mount bushings if I recall right. I assume hers has had the motor and controller updated to the newer model. No guarantee that is what it is, but I do recall that was a problem at one time.

They dryer may have drum bearing wear. These are just plastic straps riveted to the bulkhead with cork strips under them and the drum rides on them when it spins. They are readily avaliable for about 12 bucks a set.

I bought her set used from a couple who upgraded to a FL about 4 yrs. ago, so I'm guessing the set is about 6-8 yrs. old. My mom uses hot water often and has no mold in the boot etc... Now if I can look into how to tear it apart, I will look for inner mold and clean it for her.

Do I have to have a rivet gun to release the existing rivets and replace with new strips?

Just found out she sprayed WD-40 up and around the drum! She said she ran an empty cycle and no more squeaks. Time will tell, but I'm sure this isn't a fix.

I'll ck out the teardown, thanks so much for helping me out!!

You have to drill or cut out rivets. I used small screws to replace the rivets on mine and they have held for a couple years now. You can buy a small rivet gun at places like Home Depot though that will work too. I am an auto technician by trade so I have access to a lot of tools. Fortunately you only need a few tools to completely dismantle the Neptunes.

Oh by the way if she got the squeek to go away spraying the front of the bulkhead area then I would almost bet the bearing pads are what is making the noise or the felt seal. Those pads are mounted to the front bulkhead so it doesnt require full dismantling

So.... the bearing pads, are they hard to replace?
Actually have a rivet gun, although they're a pain to use IMO, but I could easily have been doing it wrong. I'm a lefty! =)

Me bad!.... I meant to specify she sprayed WD-40 inside the washer.
I will save the link in case her dryer needs the bearing slides. What about replacing the belt, think it needs it? Hard job?

Not hard, but I would wait till you do the slides. Ive never had one break on a Maytag yet. I used to have to replace it on my old Whirlpool regularly many years ago but not on a Maytag yet. I have one here just in case. Along with many other Neptune "spares" I have picked up cheap on Ebay. I probably could keep these going 20 years... LOL

I'd love to take my Frigidaire apart to see if anything needs cleaning but I can't as it violates the warranty. Wonder if calling them to come out to check is covered? Hmmm...maybe I should call them and find out.
