Loud noise at the end of spin cyle

My Whirlpool washing machine just started to make this loud noise at the end of each spin cycle. It sounds like a ton of metal has been dropped, loud vibrating noise that lasts at least 10-15 seconds. Everything else works fine with the maching though.

Searched this topic on the internet and saw several diagnosis. One indicates it could be the drive block. Another said to correct the issue it needs a new drive block and a braking system. The last one said the brake locked up, and just to grease the brake area.

What do you think? Is it easy for one to fix (I have no experience in fixing machines), or should I call a technician? What would be a reasonable cost to repair this?

Since no one replied to my issue, I went ahead and replaced the Drive Block. The old Drive Block definitely looked worn out.

It seems this repair worked. For I did three loads and I did not hear that loud bang noise anymore.

I went back to the three websites to view the correspondences and noticed the Drive Block should level with the spin shaft's two tabs. Mine did not. So I wonder how long this 'fix' would last?! I did hit the Drive Block with the back of my screw driver and it would not go down any more.

Plus, when I lift up the drum the old Drive Block was stucked in the drum shaft. I had to remove the Lint Trap in order to get the Drive Block out. Which I broke the Lint Trap and had to go and buy replacement part. $11 for a new design, four black round plastic, rather than the old one piece big white hard plastic part.

Anyone out there is knowledgeable about this? Should I have replace the spin shaft too?

IMPORTANT TIPS:
1. Spend the $15 to buy the Spanner Nut Wrench!! Even for one time use. The instructions show using a hammer and a screw driver to remove the spanner nut, believe me this does NOT work. I spent 15 minutes hitting the screw drive carefully and was not able to get the nut out. With the tool I did it in a few minutes. Even if you get the nut off for the repair, how do you know you can get the nut back in place with enough tightness?!
2. My local parts store prices are better than online stores
3. It is a great time to clean out the drum liner and drum rim

As to the garbage can idea---if you have it exposed to the sun at all, it's going to heat up. (Think how a car sitting the sun will heat up in the winter.) You don't want that. I'm familiar with zone 6 weather, having lived & gardened there for many years, so I have some idea of what you're dealing with...that is, you need to keep the soil cold when you get those weather warm-ups in mid-winter. i.e., the idea behind the insulation is to keep the heat out and the cold in the pots, to moderate the inevitable wide swings in temperature. (Think 'ice chest'.) If the pots are not in the sun, then the insulation board on top of the pots is prolly going to be sufficient. If the pots get any am't of sun OR are close to a bldg., then you need to think about keep the whole shebang cold. Naturally, you would place the insulation barrier around the pots after it's turned cold, really cold. About the wood tops idea...an inch of wood has an R-value of less than 1.5...compared to R-5 for an inch of XPS (the pink stuff) and R-8 for ISO (the foil faced yellow stuff). So, although wood is an insulator, there are better choices. Of course, you could glue XPS to the wood if you want to. Oh yeh, the pink stuff, XPS, will hold up to the elements much better than the foil faced ISO--it's yellow underneath the foil and is much more brittle than XPS. Also, the R-value of ISO degrades to where it's only marginally better than XPS.

Actionclaw, I don't have a model number breakdown for that unit, but there are a few possibilities depending on the age of the unit based on your description of the issue. Units made prior to about 1992 had a foam snubber pad that the wash module pivoted on. I'm pretty sure between 1992 and 1997 they had a molded plastic ring that the module pivoted on down on the base, the so called pivot ring. After about 1997 I'm thinking the module pivoted directly on a special paint on the base. The foam parts wear out after 15 to 25 years, the plastic rings could crack if severely shocked. Either way, you would need to replace the parts. For the very oldest units, I don't think the snubber pad is still available, but isolated commercial distributors may still have a few left. The plastic ring should still be available. Serial numbers have the year in the first two digits, then the month in the next two digits. A 9804xxxxxx will be an April 1998 build unit. I'm not sure how far back this system went. I don't think it would work at all with a broken spring and hence why I suspect the pivot dome interface. Pop off the front panel and take a look inside, being sure to disconnect power before opening the unit. You will need a 5/16 nut driver, or on other models, a putty knife to release the top panel clips. Good luck. Laundry vet

Rats. I'll have to use my imagination or ask specifically as I plan my laundry space transformation. One last nutty noise question: There is a pretty loud rythmic chugging noise, about 3 times every two seconds in frequency, lasts for a couple minutes and occurs in the rinsing phase, but not when spinning. Unrelated to the filling or tumbling. I thought it sounded like "joey, joey, joey, joey...". But when the sudsaver tub just overflowed (user error: I'd left the plug in there and it floated its way to the drain. Sigh. Won't do that again!) it sounded more like "sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry..." as spoken by HAL in 2001, the movie. Is that the pump? Should it have that noise? Seems peculiar. Cripes I wish there was a video so I would know what is normal. With scratch n dent purchases I worry whether I have a returned lemon. And should the door lock, unlock, then lock again (1, 2, 3 loud clanks) each time I start it?

No, no subwoofer. Perhaps I was unclear. It's obvious that the fan is not the problem. The sound doesn't come from the fan, it seems to come from the attic or somewhere in the walls when different switches are flipped on. It just so happens that one of the things on those switches is a fan and I noticed it there first. It also makes the noise on a hall light and when the thermostat clicks on, all of which are close to each other and likely on the same circuit. I can't recreate the sound at will, it doesn't happen every time or even every day. So hopefully the electrician can still figure out what is going on. I read elsewhere on the web about "arching" being one possibility. Or a ground wire accidentally touching a hot in the panel box. Hopefully it's not too expensive of a fix and isn't dangerous. Thankfully we have Nest Protect smoke alarms that will notify our phones if there is smoke when we aren't home, so that makes me feel better. I mentioned static because I live in Alabama and this just started happening at the same time as our coldest weather yet. Everything is super dry and cold, and my heat has flipped to auxiliary a few times. Not sure how/if it connects, probably not, but that was my thinking. The electrician should be here tomorrow afternoon and ill update after I know what the issue was. In the meantime, any more suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks! Jen
