Does this sound like a bad water pump on my Kenmore 110.92380200?

Hello there,

We just noticed this noise this morning when washing a moderately sized load of cotton clothes. The Kenmore top-loader we use is getting on in years, so it is not surprising that a part may have gone bad, just want to see if I can't isolate what that might be with some help from the good folks here.

The washer fills and agitates without any issue or noise. Spin cycle is the same thing (I think) but we seem to be getting an awful loud noise and clicking when the washer is draining the water out. I am inclined to think that this is the pump that is making this racket as the water does drain out, albeit it seems a bit slower. In some of the diagrams that I have seen for this model it appears the pump affixes to a separate motor that must turn some impeller inside the pump. I am wondering really if the impeller is broken and simply replacing the pump may be the quick fix. I found a pump online for about $16 which is sure better than the nearly $125 for the new motor.

Does anyone have any good tests or insight that might help me confirm whether this part may be to blame or have I narrowed it down enough?

Your machine has one motor. It has a shaft on both ends. One end connects to the transmission to drive it for agitation and spin. The pump attaches directly to the other end of the motor (at front of the machine). The pump runs whenever the motor runs. During agitation when the motor runs 'forward' the pump is forcing water back into the tub. When the motor reverses for drain & spin the pump sucks water from the tub and sends it out the drain hose.

One way to test if the pump is the source of the noise is to take the pump off and run the machine in both agitation and spin to see if the noise is present. You'll have to jumper the lid switch connector to run it with the cabinet removed, or reassemble the cabinet to test. The machine won't normally agitate without water, but there should be one particular position on the timer where it will for test purposes (the lid probably must be closed). Sometimes it's at the 2-minute mark in the normal cycle. I've also seen it at a certain point (unmarked) in one of the Off sections.

However, as I said, the pump runs ALL THE TIME when the machine's motor runs. So theoretically if the pump is the source of the noise, it would also make the noise during agitation. If the noise occurs only during neutral drain and not during spin (the motor & pump run in the same 'reverse' direction for both), then the problem may be in a part of the transmission related to the neutral drain function.

That is excellent information. The neutral drain idea sounds very plausible as there is a loud clicking noise occurring when it begins to drain. That, to me, is reminiscent of gears mis-tracking or otherwise. The gearcase is a much more "serious" repair (if that is where the gearing is for the neutral drain function) and will have me looking on Craigslist or similar for a used replacement washer. I will try and perform some more definitive tests and see if I can isolate the noise source. Thanks for the great info!

Stagnant happens where oxygen levels plummet to such a degree, aneirobic conditions take off, rather destructive when poisonous gases such as hydrogen sulphide and methane levels increase. If you haven't the time to go to the Briggs website and download the IPL, would you have time to go to the Briggs website and download the IPL, research the repair part numbers and then fix the head yourself? The problem seems to occur somewhat frequently, but people that don't have problems with their engine don't post asking for help. Really hard to tell what % of the time it happens. Since you didn't post the Model & Type numbers of the engine or WHICH side, we could only guess on the part#'s. I have a new LG refigerator with craft ice. My water was fine but both door ice and craft ice taste strong of plastic. LG said the problem was the braided line to the fridge, however it has a PEX lining and should not be the problem. I thought I double checked the filter seating, however upon reading this post again, I tried again. The filter felt lite and when properly turned, I could hear water flowing in and the filter got heavy. Flushed the line and wiped out the ice tray for a clean re-start. I’ll let you know if it fixes the craft ice and door ice taste

@nwfan, did you ever solve the issue with your machine? We have a 2010 Miele Inspira that has also been making a similar noise for some time--we replaced the impeller for the circulation pump a few months ago (fortunately Miele USA does still sell the parts separately, though you have to call them directly) after finding that the impeller had split into two just like Petr's photo, which improved but did not entirely resolve the noise. Ignored it after that since it was cleaning fine but now it is giving us an F14 fault code and stopping at that point in the cycle, so clearly the noise was indicating something wrong. We've taken it all apart and checked most everything that is a common source of that code but nothing seems obviously amiss, so we're running out of ideas. Curious to know whether you found a solution (and if so, what the problem ultimately was).
