Could you post a photo of the bedroom/bedroom set?

Perhaps if the filing cabinet matched the tone of the teak? And add some silver handles (if you have more silver items in your bedroom?) and maybe a silver lamp on top? Or perhaps add a basket with a lid for papers/items that need to be filed?

I like it as it is, but you could put a circle of plywood on top and put a cloth over it...like the little tables covered with round cloths. Or paint it, or stain it darker. Lots of options.

Oooh, silver handles would be nice...but what about the cut-outs already in the drawer fronts? Would that look weird?

Here is our ugly bedroom wall where the cab will sit -- replacing the black cab currently there. (I've de-cluttered somewhat since that photo, but we are really bad about shoving whatever on those shelves and on our dressers.) If you were in the bedroom looking at that wall, you'd be in our bed LOL!

I really don't want to put anything on the cab b/c I have 2 boys, a kindergartener and a toddler, and they are both into grabbing/touching stuff.

Oh, add-on -- I also want to paint the room. I have carmel colored curtains and the 1970's mirrored closet doors w/faux antique brass trim! Maybe for another post? I was thinking grey/slate blue or golden tan.

grandmaof3 -- interesting idea for hiding the cabinet. I could maybe go for a fitted slipcover...maybe...but not a circle w/cloth (too frilly for my taste). :-) Thanks for the idea though, I had not considered that at all and it would totally be an easy fix for an eyesore!

I know the dresser wall looks bad, but our bedroom is maybe 11x10 and DH needs his components on the dresser; if we centered the dressers then we have nowhere else in the house to stow a filing cab :-(

You could probably put a long silver bar pull right across the cutouts and it could look intentional if you know what I mean.

They have nice table runners that look like tapestry that you could drape over top & down the sides so they are pretty well covered & wouldn't seem so "office-like" Choose 1 that has colors in it that you can use in rest of room or are already using. Then a nice basket for things needing filing, sitting on top of it.

The first thing I would do is split the dressers and put the filing cabinet and the wall shelf in between the two.

I would try to stain it the color of the bedroom furniture. Then find some silver handles that would span the distance on the front of each drawer between the routed areas - where the three little grooved lines are in the middle.

Wow you decorators are GREAT!!! I thought my thread was doomed to die b/c my dresser wall is so fugly (and who puts filing cabs in their bedroom anyway??) ;-) Thanks for proving me wrong!

palimpsest (and les) -- I know EXACTLY what you mean...I would never have thought to attach long handles but I think that would work excellently (if I can find the right length)

sunnyca -- I love the idea of a runner, especially b/c the top has some minor water damage (looks like cup rings). I sew, and I could easily sew up something that would tie in w/our caramel color bedroom curtains. Again, an idea that would not have occurred to me.

oceanna -- those are some fab cabinet makeovers. Our metal cabinet didn't function well so I never considered making it over. The new cab functions great...and as much as I love that $750 cab, our budget was for "$30 delivered" CL cabs LOL.

les917 -- you always have the best ideas for rearranging furniture...there was a period of time where I would seek out the threads that you posted to, just in hopes that I could somehow tune in to your skills ;-) I can see how putting the shelves/cab between the dressers would balance the wall, but I'll have to think about the functionality of it. One nice thing is it could create a "filing niche"; I could possibly utilize the inner sides of both dressers for hanging wall pockets (my new favorite thing to sew).

I will have to see what DH thinks since he'll be moving everything. He originally wanted to put the cab between the dressers but I didn't think it would work, functionally. He doesn't like to have to re-do work...but hopefully he'll be willing since we're bringing in a new piece of furniture anyway.

The "new" cabinet is such an improvement over the old, and now I have some ideas of what I can do to help it look nicer, too. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I am really slow about finishing projects, I have two little boys, but when I finish this project (which is "relatively" small) I will post some before/after photos :-)

If you do put the file cabinet between the dressers (which I think would be great) you could eventually get a small one door upper cabinet to put above the file cabinet to add to your "out of sight" storage.

The reason I posted that pic is so you could see what the "updated" look is, in case you want to copy it with your CL find by staining it darker, and putting on similar handles. :o)
