7ft counter w/ s-by-s, or 4ft counter w/ stacked?

We're planning a utility room with a space 7 feet long and 3 feet deep as a laundry area. Based on an earlier design with a smaller utility room, we had assumed we'd use a stacked washer/dryer, and now that we have the space we put 4 feet of counter space next to it, with open shelves above, and nothing below, thinking we could stick laundry baskets down there if we want, or put in a small drawer unit later if we want. We thought we'd have a pull-out ironing board just below the counter on one side.

But it just occurred to me that with 7 feet of space, there's no reason we couldn't have under-counter washer/dryer (instead of a stack in a separate 3 ft space), which would give us a much longer counter for folding on, and longer shelves above. Maybe we'd appreciate that more than we'd miss the open space below.

Any thoughts on which is the better way to go? Are under-counter-height side-by-sides all too small for a family of 4, or are they roughly equivalent to stacked? We've currently got a maytag neptune stack, which seems big enough for our needs.

thanks for any thoughts!
