Cabin..

I suppose you could call it cottage style (unless you envison this in a 5000 foot domicile)or country style. It's very much like what you'd see in Country Living or Country Home. It speaks of simpler times, a slower pace and unpretentious, hardworking people. When it's not overcluttered, as some people tend to do it, it can be very beautiful, as in the picture above, especially if you can manage to incorporate some old pieces.

I think I'd call it country primitive.

I would call this style Country. I do not see any elements of Shabby Chic, even with lace curtains (which I think would be very pretty). Labels like Early American Country, Colonial Country, Rustic Country, etc, pop into my head, but I don't know enough about those styles to make any concrete declarations :-)

I"m getting a bit of a Scandinavian folk art vibe.

Country

Early American, American Colonial. I love it too. The iron thumb latch on the door, the tinware sconces, the predominance of wood, the stenciling -- timeless, simple, beautiful.

Oh yes,early American. I live in New England and we see lots of that style. Very cozy and warm.

I'd also go with either the name early american or american colonial. It's a wonderful style when done right in the right home :) It looks a bit sparse and inappropriate in a 1970's ranch...don't ask why I know that :OP (Past decorating mistakes 101) heh heh

Cottage, rustic, country, or even country French. CF isn't all rococco and lavish interiors, but rustic and homey. If you saw the episode of House Hunters International last night, the kitchen was quite rustic. ;o)

This style of decorating was popular in the seventy's for people that liked country kitchens. The natural wood cabinets,stenciling,copperware etc.

To get more of a take on it find copies of country living magazine from the seventy's. There you will get all sorts of ideas for this style.

It's early american/colonial. To see more examples look through your library's copies of Colonial Homes circa 1980's.

I'd call it Colonial as well. The tinware and the stencils. I'd make hopsacking curtains and put the stencil design on them as well, and swap out the stainless for a real farmhouse sink. I don't love knotty pine, though, so I'd give it all a wash of milk paint, but YMMV.

check out a country sampler magazine, they feature about 5 housed, and then it features web sites that feature country-primitive house wares.

bodica and nan53 - I got really excited when you both mentioned Scandinavian. That's what I had in mind, too. I think it's the stenciled pattern around the window that does it. Anyway, I love what could be called Old World, Bavarian, Black Forest, Scandinavian folk art, etc... I want a really elaborate cuckoo clock for Christmas next year! I also like the descriptions of Colonial and Early American. I figure these are styles that won't be dated in 10 years.
I'm in the middle of painting our old, dark paneling to a nice crisp white, and the above kitchen photo best illustrates the new look I want for the whole house.

These are photos of my living room with one wall painted and another not. I know the baskets and African animals aren't exactly Old World or Early American - I'll deal with that later. I'll do the rest of the painting when I can. I'll be stenciling a vine and berry design around the top of the wall and a smaller, complimentary pattern around the windows and fireplace. I detest the textured spackle ceilings and want to replace them, but can't decide how. I'd like stained beadboard on the ceiling if it's not too busy with the grooved paneling (more about that idea elsewhere on Gardenweb...). I'll probably be replacing the curtains with solid white battenburg lace ones, and the rust-colored carpet with hardwood. You may notice that one window is plain and the other has what looks like a multi-paned window grille. It's masking tape. I put it there to decide whether I wanted the window grilles. I do. Oh, yeah, and I need to win the lottery too! :)

It is definetly more of an american country style. I see nothing scandinavian in it except for somewhat blonde pine.

Sorry I just got rid of those cabinets and I'm working on turning ALL the brown woodwork into white. It's a huge job. But I'm not the Colonial Williamsburg type.

I've even got these black flat doorknobs (they look like squashed donuts to me) that I have to replace.

Isn't it funny how we all buy houses for some reason other than the interior decor, then set out to change it? Oh, except the people on HGTV who only buy houses if everything is already the right color!

I really like the changes you're making, and I love your sofa. I hope you're going to keep us posted with new pictures as you make your changes. I think your place is already warm and cozy and it's going to be even more special when you're done.

Looks like Scandanavian to me, but I don't get out much so I am probably wrong. :-)

New England country colonial. Southern colonial is different, and plantation or urban colonial are also different.
It's lovely and restrained, and has a skilled, hand-made quality.
Isn't it interesting that reproductions of rustic styles are often made sloppily, to try to make things look hand-made. In reality, old things are more often beautifully made, with the finished look affected by the limitations of old tools rather than by a lack of skill.
