Please help design lights for our kitchen

This is the layout for our kitchen as designed by our architect, with help from the kitchen designer at Lowe's. The windows face south, the house is a brownstone in Brooklyn. - the floor will be wood, and the cabinets maple. Appliances are stainless steel, countertops will be black granite. While we're trying to preserve some of the traditional feel of the house, a few modern touches wouldn't be terrible. We're thinking of some kind of pendant lights over the island, and perhaps some xenon undercabinet lights. The ceiling height is 8'2", and the beams will be exposed, and dressed with sheetrock.

What else should we use to give enough light to the room, and to make it look nice? Budget is tight! Thanks!
