You may not have enough task lighting on the countertops, but it is hard to tell without a layout.

The pendant is not going to cast a lot of light and it is also going to cast light with a fair amount of sparkle and shadow which is okay for accent lighting but is not recommended as a primarly light for a work space.

I think you may need to consider recessed lighting, different surface lighting or some kind of task lighting on the counters. You can switch them separately so they are not all on at once, if that's not necessary. I think the ceiling fixtures are also going to cause shadows and since they will likely be behind you, your head/body will cast shadows on the counter as you are working.

I was afraid that the ceiling lights would cast shadows. We cannot do recessed lights unfortunately. I will try to post a layout, but I have difficulties with my iPad and getting the link from photobucket.

Okay, I am trying to post kitchen layout.

The bar area is wrong. Behind the fridge area are the stairs to the basement and I can see through to the library/TV room. There will be a 4 foot wall at counter height with about 18 inches of countertop so that I have more working counter space and an area for the kids to sit and snack, talk, or help me bake.

Also, the window actually is about 6 inches above the sink.

You should put undercabinet lighting to under the cabinet to the left of the window, at least. If you don't want pendants over the peninsula, I would see if they can do undercabinet lighting under the lip of the raised bar and trim it out somehow.

You may not want a dark kitchen, but that's what you'll have. Your layout is also awkward and the range appears too large for the space. The most used real estate in any kitchen is between the sink and range, and you have precious little of that. You also don't appear to have a MW. I'd suggest using the blank wall of the chase to have a pegboard organizer for your pots and pans, ala Julia Child.

Holly spring, thank you for that assessment. I am actially very excited about the layout because I will have triple the space I previously had in the kitchen. That large space next to the fridge is the much needed pantry. The microwave will be on the counter to the left of the sink. I need a 36 inch oven ( the same size that was in the original 1951 kitchen) because I cook a lot. Most of my meals are baked and I need more than just one oven, something that you get only with a 36 inch oven. So I have an AGA legacy. Yup, about 2 feet between the oven and the sink, but that isn't a big problem because I am going to have so much space on the other side, TWO four feet runs. As I stated before, the drawing is wrong RE the bar area.

I did post my layout for review, but nobody commented on it.

If you would like to be helpful and give suggestions for my lighting then, please help. Otherwise, there is no need to be rude. I am sorry that I have a tiny kitchen in a tiny house. But I did spent two years in that kitchen thinking about how It would best serve me and my family. If you would like to be constructive about how I could better layout that kitchen, I am all ears. I haven't yet bought the cabinets, but the appliances are a done deal.

For the lighting, yes, you'll need to either add several semi-flush mount fixtures, or recessed fixtures to the kitchen to light it properly. Under cabinet lighting will help, as will making sure that your insert for your range hood has good quality lighting. There's so much stuffed into such a small space that recessed would be better than semi-flush mount as it would be sleeker and not add to the visual busyness. If you do the semi-flush mounts, they should be VERY simple. I would also suggest that you re-think doing a mantle style hood as it's a bit too massive a look for the size of room you're dealing with.

It would definitely be better if you could increase the space between the sink and range. Can the window shift to the left? You may have a lot of space across the aisle, but that's not the space that will get used. Prep space is between the sink and the range, and 24" is darn small for that. I at least hope that the DW is to the left of the sink.

I think you'll have a lot of light from what you proposed but I'm not sure about the pendant. I have lower ceilings as well and it might be awkward in that spot. I would just maybe add an under the cabinet to the left of the window. I also have a galley kitchen setup like you and i find it perfectly adequate in space. I barely have space next to my range and will only have a little more when we remodel. I just prep on the other side if i need more space which i usually do!

I also think the kitchen is small enough that you will prep on the DW side of the sink when necessary without a problem--its only a step away. My kitchen is smaller than yours with the sink and range flipped, and it's quite workable with one person and someone working on the small island if necessary. (and I live with a pastry chef who has prepared catering amounts of cookies in it).

But I would choose plain round surface fixtures for the ceiling and definitely add a bit of undercounter lighting to the left cabinet. You MAY be able to get away with the pendant if you have enough infill from other sources, but I have a feeling it is going to make some unpleasant sparkles and shadows for a work light.

Green, it is a bad rendering, but that strange drawer to the left of the sink is a dishwasher drawer, tall paneled.I am being really honest When I say that 24 inches is more than I used to have. The range was on the wall, and there was 4 feet between that and the sink. However my husband insists on washing all plastics, we didn't have a pantry so many canisters were on the countertop there and I often only had 12 inches or less to prep.

Tricia, the pendant is extra small, 8 inches. It is one of the reasons I chose it. I wanted something really small in the 36 inch window. I will consider another though. There was another that I really liked. I will have to go look for it. It was up light though, instead of down light like this one. space is not easy to find in less than 110 feet!

I am going to talk to the electrician about under the counter lighting for the cabinet between the sink and the stove and also some lights for over the "bar"area and the area next to the fridge.

So this was the other light that I really liked. It is bigger at 12.5 inches. Do you think this would be a better pendant? It is also 180 instead of 60 wats.

Hmmm...I think if I were you, I'd have electrician prepare the area over the sink for a light then try some different things once you get the kitchen up and running. As long as you can return it, you should be fine. Some people love bright spaces and for some shadows and dimmer light are fine in the kitchen. As long as you have those other 2 ceiling lights and some under cab lighting, I think you'll be able to put what you like over the sink as long as it doesn't hang low....
