Oh, dinkie! I'm so sorry. Lets hope the doctor will just say no!

If it's any consolation, when I had my sleep apnea test, the bed was a conferest (the number bed), room was more like a small hotel room, and the room was VERY quiet (and dark). You may be amazed with the test results. It may not be so much you have apnea, but maybe you don't get into REM sleep...or like me, breathe very shallow (no apnea), or something like that???

My sleep study was also done in a luxurious hotel room. Very quiet and dark. I was even treated to a wonderful breakfast which I wasn't expecting.

A stay in a hospital is not intended for the patient to get any rest/sleep. A sleep study, however, is done in an atmosphere that DOES encourage sleep - after all, the point is to find out how well you sleep, whether or not you have apnea or other breathing problems, whether or not you get an REM sleep, etc.

You're really not doing yourself any favors by deliberately answering "no" to questions that are designed to help determine if you have sleep problems/issues. Also, just because you don't wake yourself up with a loud snore, it doesn't mean that you don't snore at all.

And so what if the study is currently scheduled for a dialysis night -- the study can be scheduled for a different night.

Im sure people sleep while in hospital Im saying I cant every noise wakes me up.I didnt say I answered no on purpose all questions he asked the answer was no.I didnt say I dont snore because I dont wake up,no one ever said anything about me snoring..(kids,hubby)and I tokld I go fpr dialysis 3xs a week,they didnt care.

My dad only made it through a few hours of his sleep apnea test. The MD came in and issued him a CPAP and told him that their liability insurance would not let them continue the test! Dad stopped breathing about 100 times and hour!!!! He was sent home with a CPAP even without approval from his insurance company. It took him a couple of weeks to get used to the mask and the machine noise but now he LOVES it. The grandkids called him an elephant when they were little, anything to help them not be scared of the hose.

Kim, I'm sorry you're having so many problems. I'm on dialysis too, and I managed to get on the transplant list. Had what seemed like a hundred doctor appointments-gynecologist,dentist, catrdiologist, needed a colonoscopy. I happen to snore due to a deviated septum but I went to an ENT years ago who said I didn't have sleep apnea, could have surgery but it wasn't coverec by insurance, so I did without. It wasn't an issue for getting a kidney transplant. I am just sorry they're giving you such a hard time with this.

What may seem like a hard time & superfluous tests is probably just dotting every i and crossing every t in order to maximize the potential for success of the transplant. They don't want to "waste" a precious organ by having it rejected because they over looked something that coulda/shoulda been fixed ahead of time.

You want success, you'd best comply with drs' recommendations, imo. It's not easy, nor fun, I know & I wish you well.

You say your doctors consider your weight an issue...this alone is reason enough for the sleep test before any surgery.

Face it...you have two choices.
A)Stop arguing and take the test to go on to the surgery and transplant
B)Drop the whole thing, continue on dialysis and let someone who is more willing to do it right take your place for a transplant.

It was a huge bedroom with a Sleep number bed that had an oak headboard. A private bathroom. A tv. Looked almost like home. Maybe where you have to go will be nice like that.

My sleep study was in a Hotel like room too! Not confining at all. Ask them to give you something to help you sleep. I took a Melatonin before my sleep study.

My sleep study was in a very nice room, great bed, private bath and Very quiet! They did give me something to help me sleep as I figured there was no way I was going to sleep either. They had a white noise machine, also a floor fan for noise.

It was one of the best things I have done!!! I can't believe how much better I feel! I didn't think I had a problem either!

There are sleep studies which can be done at home, maybe you could have one of those.

I know you are already going through so much and facing one more test isn't something you have the energy for, but apnea puts a big strain on your heart, blood pressure, etc...

My SIL did a sleep apnea test last year and it saved her life. She's lost 20 lbs and it made a huge difference when she was retested.

That's the very thing about sleep apnea. You just stated a huge clue that you may well suffer from it.

Have a friend who said she "never" slept. She went in for her sleep test and when she called me she said she thought she hadn't slept a wink. WRONG. The test showed different. It's the quality and frequent "wakening" that makes one think they are not sleeping. Huge red light warning for apnea.

Go get the test. Apnea KILLS people. If you really want the procedure you need to listen to your doctor and do what needs to be done.

My sleep study did not show apnea, but it showed that I sleep extremely lightly. As the doctor said, a person could tiptoe into my room and it would immediately wake me up. Have you ever slept in a hospital.....it sure is noisy, people being admitted, carts going down the hall, people peaking into your room, doors closing, people talking. There is a definite reason why they give patients sleeping pills in the hospital when they can`t sleep! I understand completely why bulldinkie can`t sleep in a hospital. I sure couldn`t.

Hospitals are not intended for a person to be able to get a restful night's sleep. Places where sleep studies are done are designed with the intention for patients to get to sleep. There are regular beds (not hospital beds) which are very comfortable; the rooms are designed/decorated to be like a nice bedroom at home (or a luxury hotel room); and the atmosphere is very quiet and relaxing. No one should assume that just because they haven't gotten any decent sleep in a hospital that they wouldn't be able to get to sleep in a sleep study. Remember they WANT you to be able to get to sleep, so they can find out what's going on.

Thank you Lindsey,why on earth would not sleeping a week in hospitalbe because of sleep apnea,I hear everything,everything wakes me,ever since I had kids.It was all the noise,nurses laughing ,speaker etc.
The dr said he sees no problem,he did some tests Ive never had any lung problems.but he said the dr wants it.

Not sleeping for a week in a hospital wouldn't be because of sleep apena. It's because of all of the noise and "goings on" in a hospital. And, for the folks who somehow DO manage to sleep while in a hospital - well, they may have apnea or they may not.

The doctor may want the sleep study to rule out other problems. Have you asked him to tell you what specifically made him suggest the sleep study? Do you have problems with your legs? There's something called "restless leg syndrome" that they'd see during a sleep study. Your heart and brain are monitored during a sleep study. Maybe he's looking for something other than apnea...

Whenever I have something unpleasant to do such as a mammogram or other really obnoxious physical stuff like that, I try to mentally take myself away. I usually use a chant (only in my mind, not spoken out loud). I pray for you Bulldinkie, that this will soon be over and everything will come out alright.

No this is just one more requirement before surgery.He said he doesnt see any problem but other dr wants it.Its like 4 ekgs they only need 1 but everybody wants more.Gotta get thier share.

At least a couple of you sound a bit harsh in your replies....Please remember this, it isn't necessarily about the test and please factor in the equation that she is tired...she is sick and tired or being sick and tired...She is sick and tired of having no energy, she is sick and tired of not being able to do the things that she wants to do, she is sick and tired of living half a life and not enjoying her family, friends and loved ones, she is sick and tired of living the life of an invalid, she is sick and tired of running back and forth to the doctors and to the hospitals. She is sick and tired of the expense and she is sick and tired of every day wondering if it's all worth it...Of course it is but sometimes it's hard to keep your eye on the prize. I know exactly how she feels...It's hard to justify another test when you have spent most of the last year in the doctors office...and you have had every inch of your body imaged, poked., prodded, medicated, injected..lubricated...etc etc

Keep in mind that it's all very depressing as well...It's hard some days just to put one foot in front of the other...In the end, we all do what we have to to catch the ring....I know that there are others on this board that understand...

I am sorry Bulldinkie that you are having to live this nightmare. I hope and pray that it is over and done with soon and that you are back to health quickly. You and your doctor will have to make the decision that is right for you...

I'm not sure about this..but wouldn't a sleep study also allow the surgeon some information about how you "rest" while under???

And you can discuss with the doctor, or sleep study staff, your fears and concerns. And if you just can't rest and allow the study to happen...after a few hours of trying...you can leave..they can't hold you there...

This is for the weight loss surgeon? I believe that it's pretty normal pre surgery procedure for these kinds of surgeries...for some Sleep Apnea is induced because of excess weight..for others it's severe snoring...there are lots of causes and levels of Apnea.

My friend has sleep apnea revealed by sleep study.

She now sleeps with the ??? C-Pac and so enjoys sleeping all nite.

I went through a sleep study, ordered by an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist. I don't have sleep apnea, but the sleep study revealed that I never get into REM sleep, because of an upper airway obstruction which prevents me from getting enough air. So, I've used a CPAP now for several years. It makes a world of difference.

Before DH had his 3x bypass in September, we were asked if he had sleep apnea. Had to do with anesthesia. They just needed to know. The link below explains it quite well.

Dinkie, keep plugging away. Let us know how everything goes. By the way, when I come to snags in my quest for a transplant, I vent with the Social Worker. They know the ins and out, have seen it all. My SW is more helpful than any doctor.

While at dialysis today When my kidney dr made his rounds he asked how I made out with lung dr app ,I said they told me I have to have a sleep apneatest,he said well even I know you dont have sleep apnea,he said youre about the only one in here that doesnt sleep.I said I told them but they wouldnt listen,he seemed upset.
