Ok, talked with dr's assistant re: MRI from last week

Have scheduled another consultation with the doctor and possibily an injection or TWO!

Asked about surgery and was told doctor will go over the results with me next week.but probably will just try the injections for a while.

Well, I'm thankful to hear that!

And thanks all for your good thoughts.

I HATE SHOTS, but better than surgery, right?

Oh great! It's worth the try. Good luck with the shots. You'll do fine. When one's in pain, anything goes.

Guess you could call that the good news/bad news! But if it cures it, I'd much rather have the shots than surgery. As much as I dread needles though, I may have to have a few "shots" of my own before the appointment.

There are a number of different sorts of dementia, so she may or may not have AD, or be in the early stages. How old is she? Just being unpleasant isnt the worst thing in the world, altho there is obviously a sliding scale of unpleasantness, ranging from just mildly annoying to horrid. My mother was depressed and negative about everything, and I realized that Dad, beforw he died, had always been the pleasant, social part of the equation, and he kept her from being too bad. AFter he died, she was miserable. And told me so every day. Sigh. OK, what to do with someone whom no one likes? You can check her into the AL home (will she recover from the broken bones enough to return to her home? What's THAT assessment?) and come out only for emergencies. As people get older, they tend to have more and more emergencies. At a certain stage, I figured that I had to be with Mother for every doctor visit she had, for every banking transaction, for more and more little things that she could no longer cope with. It would be a call to say that her TV was dead, and she needed to get a new one. She had merely hit the TV/VCR button (and there was no VCR) on the remote. I could not talk her thru it on the phone, and so I'd go over there and tell her that I needed to replace the battery in the remote, when all I really did was hit the TV button to make the remote work again. See what I mean? So you can leave her far away from family, by her own choice, but somewhere down the road, if she indeed does have dementia, AD or not, you'll find that family members will spend more and more time on a plane and in a hotel dealing with her problems. I understand all too well all the people in retirement homes or AL facilities or nursing homes who complain that their families are not visiting. Between you and me, many of these people have been unpleasant and actively driven off their families. Or their families just don't try to push thru just enough to make a compromise. As in, yeah, mother is a PITA but at least I can sleep at night because I see her for lunch once a week. Some people (and this is not a negative, IMHO) can sleep at night anyway, just knowing that Mother is housed, fed and safe. Families all deal with these things differently. Good luck. This isn't easy, nor are there any 'correct' answers.

Hi fraternal member of the zoo, I'm sure that you'll be able to arrange an alternative, or successor, or "fall-back" Power of Attorney, and it'll be necessary to have each of the various alternatives (who gets incapacitated, dies, etc. first) provided for ... though with your Mom being deeply into Alzheimers, there's no way that she can be POA for Dad. You need both the financial situation, and the medical issues dealt with. I like the idea of having all/most of you have a meeting with lawyer and Dad. In fact, if Dad's lawyer isn't pretty well aware of the various ramifications at the moment, it might be a good idea for some of you to meet with him/her prior to your and her/his meeting with Dad, to get him/her up to speed. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he'll likely be able to convince your Dad of some stuff that you can't/haven't been able to, up till now. A while ago one of the posters around here, in the finance forum, told of talking till she was blue in the face with her husband about some financial situations that she, who is fairly literate financially, thought that they should do, to be met with world-class foot-dragging. When the financial planner, that they've been with for years and respect deeply, suggested pretty well the same thing(s), he agreed to pretty well everything like a little lamb. Well, not exactly that docile, I guess ... but sort of close. Whether her grinding had worn him down somewhat and the meeting with the planner pretty well was the tipping point, or whether he'd have gone along meekly if he hadn't heard such proposals earlier, I can't say, of course. But quite a few of us will go along with something proposed by a professional, when we wouldn't hear of it from someone else ... even a spouse (especially a spouse, perhaps?). I rather like the idea of them going into a facility in the place where two of the siblings live, if they can be together, would welcome/accept that idea and you feel that the siblings are willing and able to provide a great deal of the care that he needs (and will need increasingly, no doubt). And would actually come through, if that arrangement were to be set up. Has your Dad enjoyed a substantial amount of direct interaction with the folks who were his buddies through the years of his life, especially in recent years? Would he be able to phone them were he to move to the other city? Would he find that satisfactory? That seems to be about all that I have to suggest, at the moment. Good wishes to you all as you go about making the necessary decisions and putting them into effect. I send some good thoughts and hopes to you, with a prayer that you all may choose well and all be pleased with those choices after a period has elapsed. ole joyful

Amy, It is a PITA to find places to stash things when you buy in bulk, but the upside is that when you buy in bulk, you tend to not run out of things so quickly. CostCo is so far away that I'd like to only make that drive down there once a month, but most of the time we make it twice a month. I'm trying to always remember to keep a list running and to not forget to take it with me. Really, though, just the act of making a list, even if I forget to take it, usually means I do remember everything that was on it. I get tunnel vision during canning season and don't even want to leave the house to go get canning supplies, so I try to stock up ahead of the start of canning season and then I never have to drop everything to go get lids, pectin, canning salt or just whatever. It is funny---on our way down to CostCo I'll be thinking that I want to stop at a Barnes & Noble, and then pop into Hobby Lobby or Michael's for this or that or whatever, and by the time we're through in CostCo, all I want to do is get home. I'm not much of a shopper any more unless I need to get something specific. Most of the time now, if I 'need' something and cannot find it at CostCo, Sam's Club, WinCo or Walmart, I figure we don't need it. Well, except for gardening stuff, but that's a whole category unto itself. About once every month or two we'll make a short side trip to Central Market to get something special but their produce section just kills me and you almost cannot avoid walking through it because the main entrance brings you in there. They have the biggest, most diverse produce section you'll ever see, and tons of organic stuff, and it isn't so much that I am buying much there.....but, rather, I'm looking at things and whispering to Tim...."Look, organic Habanero peppers are $6.98 a pound...." or whatever, just in awe of the fact that people will pay that price when they could be growing their own. It is like a trip to Disney World for me, and then when we get to the meat and seafood area, it is the same thing there for Tim. I get my Dr. Bronner's Lavender soap there, and a few food items, but we could live without it if it wasn't there. They do have the biggest selection of cheeses you'll ever see. I could kill an hour in there just looking at stuff, but there's always that nagging feeling that I ought to be at home working on something. They are one of the few stores that have pickling cucumbers, and they tend to have them all summer long. It isn't the same as homegrown pickling cukes pickled the same day, but if a person has a crop failure and absolutely, positively needs to buy pickling cukes, at least you know a place to find them. I'll try to weigh the potatoes tomorrow to see what we actually got. It won't include, of course, the ones we already ate. The year I planted too many and had to dig over 300 lbs. of them myself from pretty dense clay (it was amended, but it was a drought year and the sun/heat had baked the clay into concrete anyway) in immensely hot weather surely did break me of planting too many potatoes. I said 'never again' and I meant it. I still plant too many, so will try next year to reduce again and plant only about 50-60% as many seed potatoes as I did this year. I also need to plant fewer tomatoes. The good news is that Tim's new work group means I only need to can about 60 jars of salsa for him to give away at work, and that is so much less than I usually can for Christmas that I am almost giddy with joy. Except.... Well, what about the what if's? What if I can enough giveaway salsa for Christmas gifts to cover those 60 people and then his boss rotates the Asst Chiefs around to new areas (this job rotation is very common in his department) and suddently he has an area with 150 people and maybe tomato season already has ended? So, even though I am going to can less, I'll have that nagging worry in the back of my mind. Next year, I'd love to cut back the number of tomato plants I grow by 50% but I don't know if I have the self discipline to do it. No matter how hard I try to cut back, there's always more plants in the ground than I ever intended. That results in tomatoes piling up everywhere and me feeling stressed by the need to hurry up and process them all. Tomorrow will be a long day in the kitchen with tomatoes, but then I'll be able to breathe much easier after it is done. Still, silently and under my breath, I am starting to chant "die,die, die!" to the tomato plants every day when I am picking tomatoes. I know that is wrong. I know it is a sign of tomato overload and tomato burnout, but still, I can't help doing it. I dream of only having 10 or 12 tomato plants and not even doing any canning at all, just one summer, to see what it is like to not wake up every day in June and July with harvesting/canning/food preservation goals first and foremost in my mind. If it doesn't rain soon, I'll likely get my wish for plants to start dying, but with Murphy's Law being what it is, the wrong plants will die and the tomato plants won't die. That would be so funny, and so sad. So, after having believed for many years that it is impossible to have too many tomatoes, I've noticed increasingly that we have too many and I'm tired of having too many and I'm more and more ready to cut back. Of course, in June I see that, recognize it, understand it and acknowledge it, but in the hard winter months of December through February, all logic and rational thought flies out the window and I want to grow everything, and lots of it. If Bigfoot shows up here, I'll just throw tomatoes at him and scare him away. Or, I'll sic our big, bad, mean black rooster on him. Whatever it takes. Millie, Bears would be too scary. My first face-to-face encounter with a feral hog while at a wildfire near Thackerville one night was horrifying. It was huge and my mind couldn't even process what I was seeing. I'd seen them before in state parks while out camping and such, but the first time you see one up close and personal still is a shock. I remember my first thought was "what? Is this a hippo? a rhino?" I laugh at myself now, but I was so flabbergasted when I saw it that I couldn't even process what I was thinking. After about 30 seconds and when I'd had time to calm down a little, I realized it was a feral hog. A couple of years later we were driving from Marietta to Durant to have lunch with our son when he was a student there, and we saw this big dead animal on the side of the road near Lake Texoma. It looked like a small bear or a very large bear cub. We were flabbergasted, so we turned around and went back to look at it. So did everyone else. As each vehicle pulled up and people got out to look at it, someone would say "feral hog" and the new arrivees would say "oh, we thought it looked like a bear" and we all would laugh because we all thought the same thing. Now we see them so often that no one even bats an eye at them, and that's not a good thing. There's too many of them now and they don't stay down in the river bottom lands like they used to---they are right here in our rural neighborhood. We have them a lot at the back end of our property, which is about 1000' west of our house so we rarely even go back there any more. Sunnydew, I grow a lot of hollies but don't have any inkberries. I do know that spider mites like them though, so watch for those. Maybe your web is just some sort of spider. We live on rural acreage and it seems like we have about a million spiders per acre, and each and every different kind has different forms of webs and put their webs all over plants, more so further out....not right up around the house where humans, dogs, cats and chickens will walk right through their webs and bust them up. Kim, I have no words for this situation. Well, I have words, but for the sake of politeness, I won't use them. I promise to only use nice words instead. I. hope. she. enjoys. her. lawn. (I said that through gritted teeth.) Lawns make no sense to me. People spend a lot of money to plant, feed and water a lawn for what purpose? So they can mow it weekly, rake up the grass clippings and have them hauled away to already overflowing landfills? Lawns are monocultures that do not support a diversity of life, yet we Americans cling to them as a vestige of the days when only wealthy landowners could afford the resources to maintain some pristine but largely useless green carpets of lawn. If I had to have a perfect green lawn, I'd just buy and install that stupid fake grass they sell nowadays (CostCo sells one that looks really realistic) and I wouldn't waste time and resources maintaining it. The sad thing is that your garden fed and nourished so many in so many ways, and now that will cease. That is the tragedy of this situation. When I think of you, I think of you and Ryder out there working together in the sun. I think of beautiful flowers and fresh herbs. Fresh apricots. Rain. Sunshine. Yes, even weeds. Tomatoes, potatoes, onions and eggplant. Butterflies, bees and other little creatures. Sunflowers. Borage. I could go on and on. I think of the people at the Farmer's Market buying and delightfully taking home your products and enjoying them. I think of life. I think of how creating the garden, planning it, planting it, maintaining it, sharing it and spending every day out in it fed your soul. As you worked to improve the soil, you were indeed feeding the soil too. The soil fed the plants. The plants helped feed all the little creatures. I believe God looked down on your garden and smiled. It was all so good. There is a synergy in all of that. And, it completely sucks that it all is being destroyed. I am so sorry for that. I grieve for the loss of what you created. I am sorry for all the pain I know this is causing you. Having said all that. I. know. you. We are kindred souls along with all the other gardening freaks here on this forum. Gardening is in your blood. You will create a garden wherever you go and it will be a million times better for the world than any lawn grass. You will flourish wherever you live and grow. You will be happy. You will achieve. You will thrive. So will your garden. Maybe it isn't going to be in the place where you started and which you now are leaving, but it will be good. It will be better than good. It will be great. I guarantee it. You are setting out on a wonderful new adventure, and perhaps it isn't an adventure you were anticipating going on....but you can and will do this, and you will arise above the actions of that foolish young woman who is going to replace your beautiful, bountiful garden with lawn grass. The wise Kelly Clarkson sings "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, stronger, stronger" and she is right. This change in circumstances will not kill you. It will make you stronger. It will make you better. Please don't let it make you ill. You deserve to stay well and healthy. You brain controls your body. Please don't let the distress over the loss of your garden make you ill. Take care of yourself and know, too, that this will pass and you will have your dream---you'll just have it in a different location. So, if you must, then weep for what you are losing, and then move on. Move on to bigger and better things. Life is a journey and it is time for you to journey on to the next place. God is watching over you and I believe you will end up in the place where you were meant to be all along. Now, please focus on your health. We only get one life here on this planet and we are meant to live our lives in a way that is meaningful and contributes to the world. You are doing that. You have done it with your current garden. You will do it in your new job and at your new home. You will do it in your future. Living well and happily is the best revenge. Staying healthy is important so you can begin the next exciting adventure. I learned long ago that I only could control the behavior of one person. Or three people---me, myself and I. I cannot control whatever anyone else does. I only can control my reaction to what they do. So, I live my life according to my beliefs and my own form of an honor code, particularly with regards to our Mother Earth. I cannot prevent anyone else from tearing up or destroying their patch of land. I cannot stop them from dumping chemicals on it. I cannot control how they use it, view it, abuse it, waste it, etc. I can only control me and how I treat the little patch of land where we live. I refuse to let anyone else hurt our little piece of Mother Earth. I love it, I cherish I and I admire how many creatures of all sorts it supports. When I walk on our land, I see life everywhere in gazillions of different forms. I imagine you are much like me. You revere what God's earth, your hard work, the sweat equity and the pain all combine to produce. You will produce a beautiful garden. You will manage a beautiful farm. You will bloom wherever you are planted. Believe it. I do. You will not be embarking on this new journey alone. We'll all be right here with you. Happy Gardening lies ahead. Now, go dig up and save as much as you can, but don't fret over what you cannot find and move. We'll all help you rebuild your friendship garden in your new place---one plant and one batch of seeds at a time. I am not up to speed on this, Glenda, but I assume you are talking about a knee. I am going through the same thing right now. I am going to have an MRI and see if shots will help. If not, I guess I am looking at scoping or most likely, complete replacement. Shots don't scare me at all....I dread surgery though. Hope you have a good out come with whatever you end up doing.

I have a calcifying Achilles tendon which is midly to very painful pretty well all the time. So far I've had two steriod shots, both with totally different outcomes. The first shot was great, the pain went away for months (then wore off the day I got on a plane for a six week trip to Europe :-/). The second shot, the pain went away for about two hours and then came back. The doctor did warn me that results cannot be guaranteed.
DH had a shoulder problem that sounds very similar to yours. He did have surgery, was painful for a week or so but he was very conscientious about doing his rehabilitation exercises and was almost totally recovered in just a few weeks. The surgeon did say though the older you get the longer the recovery time. (DH was about 48.)

Mine my shoulder, left.
Slowlly losing mobility, arthritis, calcification around the bones, bone on bone with grinding so loud person next to me can hear it.

Done therapy, multi times.

I just don't want to lose total use of my left arm. I'm 50 per cent usage of it now.

Glad to hear you may try the shots. I had the bone on bone grinding and know exactly what you feel. Miserable it is! I tried the cortisone injections but wasn't able to get the relief, but most everyone I know that has had the shots have been able to overcome the pain. Makes the physical therapy much more successful! Wishing you nothing but the best.

Well, hopefully the shots will work. I'm not a huge fan of shots, but even less so of surgery. I avoid that like the plague. For me, it's the absolute last option. I'm terrified to be put under. Don't know why, never had any complications with it, I'm just so afraid of it.

Best of luck Glenda, I hope you get relief soon.

I'm so glad they think the shots may help. I'd hate for you to have to have surgery. Lots of special thoughts and prayers heading your way!

Glenda, good news! And lots of luck. They'll give you that numbing shot and it will go so quickly you won't know they've done the steriod.

I had one done to my hip in the imaging dept (guided by xray) once, and they put a very long lasting anesthetic in with the steriod that lasted about two days - it was heaven, I could walk for the first time in months.

DH had better long term results with the injection to his knee last May. He's been hiking off trail in heavy boots through timber since June and doing fine, enjoying his work still at 67....Even has to stop and wait on the college interns he's taken with him a few times when they can't keep up :) Taking occasional naproxen or tylenol but doing fine.

That sounds like good news! I hope the injections work for you.

Marilyn, I had the sin-visc (I'm not sure that is spelled right) injections in my knees just over a year ago. I am doing ok to great depending on the day LOL! This is an injection of a jelly like fluid. I had the right knee done in three injections, one per week, exactly the same day each week, beginning the Monday before Thanksgiving in 2011. In Feb of 2012, we did the same with my left. Some days I am almost pain free, others I am back in my knee brace. Had I not had this done, I don't know where I would be today. Maybe with replacements. I don't know. I hope you have success with the injections.

Flexibility would be the hope, of course everyone will have a slightly different result with no two shoulders exactly the same....we'll all keep crossed fingers that you are one of those who gets the most natural and pain free movement back from this.

Am I thinking steroid shots for life? I'm 73.
Or are they just a temporary fix and if I stop then it's the same ole same ole?

I went today and go back tomorrow for blood work and then MRI and referral to orthopedic surgeon. My knee problem is from multiple falls on hard surfaces, so I don't know if shots would work for me. They may have to go in there and clean up the area. I have been in a wheelchair for a week at a time, three times in the past year....completely unable to walk. A friend of ours fell and tore her rotator cuff in her shoulder, She has done much better than expected....seems to have to have all of her mobility back. Hope it goes well for you, Glenda.

Steroid shots are only good for a few times. They do not provide a cure, nor can you take them again and again. And they are not ordinary shots-- even with the local anesthetic, they are a really strange sensation that many people (me included, with my hip) hate.

For lot of people with some types of injuries, the positive effects of the shot can get them thru while they are doing PT and healing otherwise, then they no longer need the shots.

Please, please be careful. A friend had those and ended up worst than ever and she is 83. I would get a second opinion. those shots you mentioned usually only help for a period of time and if you take too many, that is not good. I had one about a year ago for the arthritis's in my back, but I do have a couple of squashed vertebrae and it has helped for awhile. I have to have some stuff squirted in to and then that should help. Mine is a back thing , not shoulder. Here, there is a procedure that they will fill/put something in to stop the grinding bone on bone. Find out if you can get that procedure. I will try to find out more if you you wish, just let me know.

Glenda, did you happen to see in another post where I told you to try Hyaluronic Acid pills from the health food store? The orthopedic surgeon can also give you shots of the Hyaluronic acid.

Shots don't "cure" anything. They just temporarily relieve pain. Most steroid shots can only be given once every 3 months and usually they don't "last" that long.

I've been taking the Hyaluronic Acid capsules for 3 months. Heard you can take the injections.

I have also been on tumeric capsules, twice daily, which has helped.

Multi thanks for all your advice and support.

I have appointment Wed, March 13.

It all depends on the sort of condition or injury that you have. When athletes are injured and get a steroid shot, it's to ease the pain while they are doing PT and healing. The shots do not cure anything. Many injuries, especially with older people, are repetitive stress, long-term wear and tear. The shots will not cure anything, just provide some relief.

In my case, with my hip, the anesthesia shot (lasts a day or two) gave me a lot of relief. But the steroid shot had no effect, which helped me decide that hip surgery was the only way to go. Almost 2 years now. and I'm glad I had the surgery.

Glenda, my friend takes the shots for her shoulder pain. She is only allowed to have them every six months. They relieve the pain for a while..in her case up to 4 to 5 months. She is 66 yrs old and has been taking them for the last two years.

Glenda-you can only have so much of the steroid stuff in your system in your lifetime-however,with the shoulder,as a rule,the steroid really helps-experience talking here-you will end up more able to move it,greater mobility range,and with that,the muscle will strengthen and help you as well.There is little to no pain at all,after a couple of days-and its good for a very long time.I had the shot once when I was cooking all the time in the right elbow(tennis elbow) and that was good for an easy 20 yrs.good luck

About 5 yrs ago, I fell and the first part of me that hit the ground was my right thumb. It jammed pretty well because all my body weight landed on it. I had a steroid shot and it provided complete relief for about 9 months. My thumb started aching again so I got a second steroid shot. The second one has worked "permanently". At the time of the second shot, my doc said that if it didn't provide relief, then I'd need surgery. The shots do not provide instant relief - it's gradual. For me, My thumb was fully functional in about 2 wks after each shot.

The plan is to try shots because it's less invasive to you and they cost less than surgery. Of course there is no guarantee that shots will or won't work. However, I'd rather brave up and have a shot than deal with the recovery from being sliced. See what your doc recommends and go from there.

I suppose I'd try the shot *once*, then start looking at other options, like the gel injected (which I have only heard of for knees and has had 'iffy' results) or surgery. Surgery and rehab shouldn't be too bad. It's not a weight-bearing joint, but it does need to 'rotate', so is more like the knee than a hip. Today's pain meds make all these surgeries and recoveries MUCH easier.

I have two artificial hips. One (2004) has been 'like new' from the first; the other (2008; same surgeon) not as good, but still better than pre-operation. My bone loss is primarily due to many years of steroid use to treat my asthma.

of course we al have different problems but had 1 cortizone shot and knock on wood, it's lasted for well over a year?

I'm surprised your doctor hasn't thoroughly explained the shots to you Glenda, before suggesting them. As I said in my previous post, my doctor explained that they are an inexact science which do not work for everyone, do not work every time and no telling how long they will actually last for. I've had two; the first worked for about six months and the second about two hours.

I will get a full explanation of everything when I see her next week.

This was a followup call from doctor's assistant to tell me I needed to see the doctor and make an appointment.

She just told me that I'd probablly be having injections.

Glenda, steroid shots are a "fix," not a cure. Nothing is. I have had them twice. in my spine.. one month apart back in 2006. Haven't needed any since then, but they did not "cure" me of all of my spinal problems, but were a great relief for that situation. And In my opinion, age has nothing to do with it. I was 82 at the time.

That shoulder pain won't go away, or it would have gone away by now, not just gotten worse. The numbing "shot":is no more than a pin prick. After that you will be relaxed and glad that you did it. You may feel a little light-headed when it is over; that is very temporary, if at all. Because my first shot was for my right leg, I had to have some one to drive me home. Second shot was for my left leg, I drove myself home. Since this is your shoulder, I would think it best to have someone
drive you home.

If you don't have it done, you will probably wish that you did, because it obviously won't get better on its own.
