Old time play things....my kids are weird throw backs

One thing my mil doesn't understand when she decided to clean my house, I am not getting into it here, is that my family is different, often a throw back to another time. Right now Rhiannon is on the floor in front of me sorting out a pint of buttons. She will also sort out my old bottle caps, wear clip on earings, carries a hanky in her purse most days, and loves lots of costume jewelry the gaudier the better. I collect and love miniatures and they will spend hours looking though the huge jar I have of misc. stuff, miniatures, earings, old toys, other little odds and ends. Looking at them is kind of like one of those look and find books. Also I have 2 gallons of wooden spools that the kids like to string along on yarn and make necklaces with big beads, or Hayden likes to roll them on the kitchen floor, or the girls like to use them as building blocks. They also have tons of metal cookie cutters that they can ue to play with their play dough and make cookies. They also like to play with my batches of canning jars and zinc lids and making towers out of their lids and to pretend that they are canning things. I know that my grandma,mom, and I all remember playing with the same kind of things while growing up even though the kids have a lot of toys and fancy things, their favorites are old buttons, spools, clip on earings and hankies. Sometimes I think that Rhiannon is a throwback to my Great Grandma who we called Grams.

So are there any others out there that their kids or such play with these things or memories of playing with them??

I like playing and collecting old things...I can spend hours going through my old buttons....I have one of those big popcorn tins full of old buttons. Plus a few quart jars full. I also have old wooden thread spools too.
I collect and play with (especially with my grandkids)old tin spinning tops. I have both the pump kind and the kind you use a winder on the top then push the top out spinning like crazy. Then there is my jar full of old jingle bells of all sizes. And I have Denny's mother's old jacks. They are funny looking.

I'm also a play of a little more modern things...such as I have an orginal Nintendo and about 100 games,A super Nintendo , a Nintendo 64, a Playstation, a Playstation 2
and a Game Boy (the little square one,right before the DS)

Oh and I have a bag with about 30 Barbies and Kens...LOL I don't play with those...Those I collected for my grandaughters...I'm sure glad they've outgrown them...what a mess to clean all those up..

I guess I'm just a wierd "old" kid...who's grandkids call....grams

We will have to get together and play. I hadn't thought about the bells, I have tons I have picked up at thrift stores and garage sales. I also have several quarts of jewelry and jewelry . A lady in town gave me a candy box full of costume jewelry for the kids and now I can't find I think my mil in her cleaning psycho spell threw the box of jewels away.

We moved to a house in the country on 7.5 acres in December. We immediately saw (& heard) 4 wheeler tracks through the woods & suspected our neighbor's kids. We put up several no tresspassing signs & piled some brush on the heavily travelled routes & thought that would take care of it. Yesterday I was home & heard them in the woods very close to the house. I went outside & as soon as they saw me, they'd zoomed off. They'd also moved some of the barricades & signs. I called over there - kid answers & demands to know who it is - I say "Your neighbor" & he puts on his older brother who does a very poor impression of his father. Laughable, really - but annoying still. I go through my spiel to let him know he was busted & he says "I'll talk to the boys" --- haha --- and I mention that my husband & I will drop by later to talk to him & his wife about it. About 15 minutes later we go over there. Mom answers door (we've not met her yet) - he's fessed up to her but very argumentative to us, she's not too friendly even though we explain it's a liability issue - our land is rough & we have a pond that we don't want anyone near, etc. Her comments "it's spring break, they're bored", "we're gonna have this problem with lots of kids" (not true), "they were here first, before there were any other houses" etc. She did shoot him a dirty look when I asked who I just spoke with on the phone since his daddy was not home. Busted again. I'm hoping this does not become a big issue with them. I like having good relationships with neighbors - we're pretty good ones ourselves. It just seems like a common courtesy to me - not to mention that we posted legal signs. We're planning on fencing the property eventually - but were getting settled in first & it wasn't top priority. I guess now it will be sooner than later.

I was lucky enough to inherit my grandparents house and as I have been reading through this thread. It got me think about all the things I found there, most of it wasn't new to us but some of it was. -My grandfather was a commercial fisherman so I found licenses for him & every member of his crew. Various documents related to fishing in foreign waters. The bamboo poles they used, glass net balls, hooks, net needles for mending a net, catch records, etc. -The affidavit my great grandfather signed when his daughter (my grandmother) married someone (my grandfather) who wasn't yet a citizen & thier marriage license from the early 20's. -War ration books with the stamps in them, the really funny thing is that my grandfather's height kept changing over the years, from 6'0 to 6'3! -War damage insurance policies issued by the federal government. Our house is near several bases so apperently the government insured their home, & probably the whole neighborhood, from damage either from an invading enemy or from defending from an enemy attack. -Booklets for traveling through Europe after the war while the Marshall Plan was still in effect. My grandmother had a lot of family in Europe (we still do) so they were probably planning a trip back . Propaganda pamphlets from the American government about being quite in public places & just generally being careful because of "spies". -Various newspaper articles & scrap books form the 1930's to 1940's. A letter from one of my grandfathers to his mother that was heavily censored by the War Dept. because he was serving in the Pacific. I remember one of my great uncles (his brother) telling me that for a few years the family didn't know where grandpa was while his ship was in the Pacific. I still have his pea coat & wear it when it's cold enough. -One of my great uncles Korean War era army uniform & ID bracelet. -Coins from all over the world. -A Disney war bond issued to my mother (she was born in 1939). - A letter dated 1953 from the County Assessor that explained they would begin issuing Assessor Parcel Number for every property. A letter from the post office dated about the same time introducing the zip code system! Phone bills form the '40's & 50's were the phone number had a location exchange like "bayview123" -Antique silk velvet bedspreads that were hand painted with Rococo pastoral scenes. They were backed with canvas and weighted a ton. I couldn't image actually sleeping under them with out being crushed! -Match books with a picture of my mom when she was in her early 20's. I asked her about them & she said she would write her phone number inside & give them to guys she liked! A HUGE box of her shoes from the 50's & 60's, along with the coordinating hats, gloves & purses. -A black beaded "flapper" slip that must go over an other dress, because it is way to sheer & way to short to wear alone -The remnants of the living room curtains, I hadn't seen them in over 30 years. My grandmother must have been saving them for rags (whose grandmother didn't do that!) -Immigration paper work for one of my grandfathers and for my maternal great grandparents. -Some really beautiful handkerchiefs, including a silk one embroidered with a R which would have belong to one of my great grandmothers. -Letters from various family members in Europe and possibly a great aunt who lived in Massachusetts. I'll have to do some research on that branch of our tree. -My mother's first communion vail. A beautiful sterling silver rosary, the beads are open filagree work. Judging by the marks, I think it is from South America. -My grandmothers salt & pepper shaker collection. There was one set the was just the head & upper chest of a guy, but he's not wearing a shirt! An other really tiny set shaped like pineapple grenades or maybe just pineapples it's kind of hard to tell because they are so small. And so, so much more On a different note Burden, those marks might just be the "signature" of the carpenter. One of my grandfathers liked to do wood work and he would always sign the stuff he built, and his tools with a specific design.

No freakin' way should a kid be on the computer that much! And no, an hour a day outdoors is not unreasonable. You're being a good parent. DH is being a lazy parent. My SS is 10. DH used to let him go on the computer when he woke up in the morning (so he'd haul himself out of bed before dawn of course) and be on it ALL DAY LONG. It was a convenient babysitter so DH didn't have to DO anything with him. I said no dice to that. SS was miserable to be around when he was on the computer that much (for example, he'd cry and scream when told to get off the computer and come have lunch) and no kid needs that much video game input. Now, on a school night, he gets a max of 90 minutes of video games. Usually only 1 hour, but sometimes a little more is OK. Many nights he doesn't go on at all now, and doesn't even complain about it anymore! On weekends, he is not allowed on computer or video games until 10am, he is dressed, with teeth brushed, breakfast eaten and bed made. And a max of three hours per day (except if he has a friend over or something unusual like that). He's much more pleasant to be around now!! We also boot him off the computer at least 10 minutes before a meal etc. He's less glazed if he has a few unplugged minutes. We're in Saskatchewan, so it's cold here in the winter and he can't play outside. But he can play Lego, or bedroom hockey, or read books, or colour, or play a game with us. In the summer I kick him outdoors all the time! DH was open to my "no dice" and likes that we can work together. SS was somewhat resistant of course - but has adjusted now.

Oh come on, mkroopy, just keep the bonds going if for now only when nobody can 'see' you LOL. She's going to look back on the great father she had growing up as a child one of these days and she's going to know the old guy really really loves her even when she was a butthead. You might ry letting her invite one of her best buddies along occassionaly. While it's not exactly one on one, it's still well spent time with your daughter. The day will come too when she is old enough for a boyfriend and you can pretty well rest assured that the bohfriend will think the guy willing to take them doing all the boating, fishing, blah blah is pretty cool. I never bought a boyfriend home that did not suddenly discover all the cool stuff my father did (hunting, fishing, workshop, gunsmith ect ect) and I'd find myself once again hunting during season if I wanted to see my boyfriend on those weekends, fishing, refilling shells in the workshop blah blah. I have a hunch it won't be very long before your daughter appreciates all the skills and fun things you've taught her to enjoy and do. I don't shoot animals, but I loved wildlife photography while my father and my boyfriend (now husband) sat under a tree waiting for Bambi to come along. Give her time, she's just at that stage. She likely does not want to be seen with her mother either unless Mom's getting her hair done or clothes shopping (Mom, could you just give me your credit card and drop me off?)

When I was young I could spend hours looking through my Grandma's old family pictures. She had a drawer full of them. I still love those old pictures.

I remember when my sister and I were wee tots, and we liked playing with objects that we could build with, or imagine grown-up stories. She liked dolls, pin-on jewelry, ribbons and "dress-up" clothes; I liked things like blocks, dominoes, screw drivers and an assortment of nuts and screws, wood scraps, coaster wagons, pocket knife for shaping wood, small saws, a dirt pile for shaping castles and roads, etc. We both whiled away many a rainy day with crayolas and coloring books.

With all this background, I yet warn about the choking hazard of small playthings for the very young children. We never gave this a thought when we were young, but the hazard was real.

That is how my girls played, about 27 years ago. :)

I am glad, yours get to do this. I think, most kids these days don't get to "really play". Way to much computerized stuff.

I wanna come play with you folks!

Sign me up. I'm a button collector; I love "playing" with my buttons, and old jewelery, beads, miniature things, etc. I have a few old family photos, and even more old antique-store photos; I call them my "instant ancestors."

It makes me want to cry to see fine old photos of elegant (or not) people sitting in boxes on the floor of the shops. I have to "rescue" them. I name them; give them a family title ("Great Aunt Matilda", etc.) and pop them in a book. Some future family member will shake their head in bewilderment. LOL

Your children sound like delightful people. It's wonderful that they can entertain themselves with the best toy of all...their imagination.

I also love old hanky's, pieces of lace, old sewing patterns, ancient books, old greeting cards, etc.

I remember 60 years ago at my grandmother's house playing with her button box. We would string them together to make necklaces. She showed us how to make spinning toys out of a big one and some string.

How do you collect buttons? I have so few, but then I used the ones I had in sets to sew on baby cardigans I have knit for a new baby.

Caroline, Patti and anyone that wants to join in, we should do a little swap of our stuff. We could fill a padded envelop with buttons, bits and pieces and cloth or crocheted things and swap bits and pieces. Anyone interested, just let me know, it could be a lot of fun.

That is why I am so upset with my MIL she threw away some of my "treasures" and in looking for others I can't find my bag of new miniatures that are all old that I just picked up. I was searching and got interupted and now don't remember where I put them and haven't the time to look for them.

I liked paper dolls and when even younger, the 'sewing cards' where you drew yarn in and out of holes to outline a figure. Kids like to 'accomplish' something.

I got a phone call from my daughter one day, after the family had all been here...with the great grandson.
He was spending the weekend with grandma (my daughter).
She said when they got home and were getting him ready for bed a bunch of my buttons fell out of his pocket in his jeans....LOL...he had gotten into my tin of buttons and got himself a handful.

He's a pocket kid...everything goes into them...

I imagine someday frogs will find there way in there too...

My kids loved my buttons. I have a wooden box full of old buttons and it was a fun rainy day activity to sort through the buttons.

I also had a couple boxes of the medium sized waxed paper cups. They would take them out and make giant stacks of cups. They would try to see who could make the biggest tower, etc.

Also - card table tents! The best! Take a card table and toss a couple blanket over it for a tent. Better yet if you have some big boxes you can add out the back for tunnels.

My kids also like the old wooden spools.

Caroline, I love your 'Great Aunt Matilda' thing.... wouldn't it be fun to make an entire book like that? I'm thinking photos, especially if the time period could be identified, names, and stories! Stories told either about or 'by' the person in the photo. 100% fictional of course. I'd do it in a big (preferably old) scrapbook. My DH and I both love old stuff and digging out treasures at garage sales and second hand stores. This might be something we could do together this summer.

Last summer, we bought a old trunk/wardrobe. The kind people used to carry on ships. The mother of the woman we bought it from had used it when she came to the US from hawaii, to marry this woman's dad who was shipping home from the service. We have information on the year, where she came into the US, how she traveled to Michigan, etc. What a treasure!

My kids will play with anything...sticks, rocks, grass, flowers, absolutely anything they find. At the farm they would make big nests out of grass they would pull and put rocks inside. Then they would be the mother birds (or if it's Claire the "Mudder bird"). LOL I love that they are so creative. I'm so proud of them for it.

One of my fondest memories was going to the fabric store in College Park, GA. It was in an old warehouse by the train tracks. They had two huge whiskey barrels FULL of loose buttons. The owner's daughter and I would play in them. After I was grown, I went to a small little fabric store in Riverdale (near College Park). When I walked in the owner looked at me and said she remembered me from the College Park store. It was the same owner but alas she no longer had the button barrels. Her daughter had the same special memories.

I have a button plastic tub now and my nieces would occasionally play in it when I was still in Atlanta. I still like to play with them! Your kids can learn wonderful math skills with their games and will make special memories to boot! Good for you!!!!!

I loved my grandmothers buttons when I was a kid. I also would spend hours with the Sears Catalog "shopping' for my dolls. My favorite toys were my barbies and my paper dolls. My barbies were the best dressed in the neighborhood as my mother sewed all of these teeny tiny clothes! She even made a beautiful closet to keep them in! I still have it too.
