Wall color with repainted French Provincial bedroom furniture

My parents are planning on moving my childhood furniture down this coming year and I am thrilled to be planning (will help chase away my post-holiday decorating doldrums!).

My childhood furniture was the Sears "French Provincial" style that was popular in the early 70s. I'm so happy that my DD will soon have it.

While it's in good condition, I'd like to update it and fell in love with this look last year:

My problem is that I've always wanted to have a pink bedroom. As my daughter is only 2.5 yo but already shows a preference for pink, I thought painting her room pink would be perfect. I just don't see how refinishing the furniture in turquoise would suit up with even the faintest of pinks...would it?

I'm guessing I'd have to make a choice between pink walls or the turquoise treatment and as much as I love pink, I think I'd have to go with the turquoise treatment (maybe I'll just paint my laundry room pink!).

Anyway, DD will continue to share a room with her twin brother for at least another couple of years so the furniture will be in the "guest" room.

Would love your thoughts on wall color for the room with proposed furniture treatment.

I should add that the room (picture linked below) NEVER looks that bright. The furniture in the photo below is not ours. The window faces northeast. The room is currently painted a Band-Aid pink (our entire house is painted this color & I can't wait to start making changes!).

Thanks for any suggestions you might have to offer up.

btw - the Band-Aid wall color description is something I took from Amysrq - it is the perfect description of our walls. :)

I think what you need to do is find some fabric that ties the colors together. Just doing a quick look, depending on the actual blue of the furniture, something like this might work as one of the major fabrics in the space, and you could pull the pink for the walls from this palette:

I'm in the midst of a similar project for my DD. We are using 1940's vintage furniture. While some of the furniture was already painted a distressed aqua, we decided on a creamy white (BM Bavarian Cream). The creamy white has really brightened up her room, made it look more spacious, plus allowed us more versatility with paint and fabrics. However, DD wants to leave the nightstands unpainted so we'll probably do that as I figure I can always paint them later. Personally, I do not care for painting the hardware the same color--just looks like a lazy paint job to me). I am using Rust-oleum on all the hardware--a brushed nickel finish. If I knew, (KNEW!) that I would be moving in less than 4 or 5 years, AND....if I were paying painters a group of $$$ to do it for me, then, yes, I would go to Ben Moore or Sherwin Williams and ask what the most popular decorating beige neutral is, and buy that to paint. That way, buyers who need a neutral box to imagine their things in would be satisfied, and buyers who plan to paint each room purple or neon green anyway, could just make fun of me to themselves for being so boring and make me a nice offer for my house. OR..........If I liked neutral beige rooms, then, I would go into a nice model or two, or ask around here, or pick the most soothing neutral off the fandeck and get my rooms painted and put back together so I could enjoy the soothing qualities of having a color that works with all the furniture and things I want to put in those rooms. BUT.......If I were doing the painting myself, or with my DH and wanted to enjoy whatever years I happen to continue living in my home, I would think about how I want to use these rooms and paint accordingly.......figuring that if a resale situation came about sooner than expected and I was caught red-handed with a cafe au lait reading room, a warm soft gold guest room, and a pretty putty-colored sitting room, then, I might just let the buyers decide, or at worst, hire some fast painters to do a nice coat of bone white and recoup my costs at closing. I lived with my folks for a year before I got my current apt. during a relocation for a job, so I know how that goes. Here's what I suggest. Find out if you can get a storage box at the local U-Haul place or rent a storage locker. Pick a clean, well lit, well attended place that you won't mind visiting from time to time to get stuff you need. That will help with the decluttering. Do everything you can to put your stuff in closed storage, that helps make the room look restful. I store a lot of my teaching supplies in clear plastic boxes in shelves, organized by project. Is there an unpainted furniture outlet near you? That's another source for basic storage and office furniture. Check out IKEA's Web site for inspiration, but also definitely peruse the "Apartment Therapy" Web site too. Once you get it de-cluttered in there and narrowed down furniture wise, you can work on editing and displaying your art. First things first. Get a friend to come and help you edit your clothes and other stuff. I have a friend with great taste, she helps me edit out what is no longer working for me, clothing-wise.

Great advice les917. I had the same dresser in my room as a child. My parents gave it to me a few years ago when my daughter finally got her own room. While I did not paint it aqua, I paired it with bedding that has light aqua and pink. The wall color is BM just peachy and was pulled out from one of the florals in the bed:

Thanks for that suggestion, les. I can't believe that didn't occur to me! That would definitely work even as the guest room it would be for the next few years.

Southernfrenchie - thanks for sharing the pix of your daughter's room. It's lovely.

As I mentioned above, the room is never this bright. The current Band-Aid paint is much darker than this and really weighs the room down (dark).

Oh I must have read your original post too qickly the first time... My daughter has a twin brother as well : ) They shared a room in our last house in TX. We moved to our current home right before their 4th birthday and I was able to give her her own room (she has 4 brothers).

Anyway, when it came to painting her room she definitely had opinions. This color was a compromise between the darker pink she wanted and the lightest pink on the paint chip. I do remember seeing a lot of the bandaid pinks in my paint search. Your best bet is definitely finding a fabric you could pull the blue and pink paint from.

BTW, I think that the blue treatment on the dresser is absolutely gorgeous! There is no doubt in my mind you can pull this off with a very soft pink for the walls : )

If you do the blue with silver trim instead of gold, you could still do the pink. I think the gold keeps it stuck in the 70s, IMHO. I think the silver would be a much fresher look.

southernfrenchie - well, what a coincidence about our boy/girl twins! We currently live in TX! :)

Since the furniture isn't here yet & I'm dubious as to what my 2.5 yr old would pick out in terms of paint choices LOL I guess I'll have to do some careful searching for a pink without brown undertones. Should be interesting!

dianlo - I think it would be a great idea to do the silver trim. Thanks for the idea.
