Solutions for duct size mismatch, leading to unequal heating

Hi,

so we have a 1400 sq ft condo with a duct problem.

The furnace is located at one end of the house. From the furnace, the main duct (12"x10") leaves and splits, one section to the 2nd bedroom (which is only 12'x14'), the other section for the rest of the house (poor design, I know, it's endemic). The section that serves the rest of the house goes through the master bedroom and into the master bathroom. This run from the furnace is approximately 15 feet, and we get great airflow through all of these registers.

Now, here's where the problem happens. From the bathroom, the duct bends and shrinks to a 6" diameter duct that goes for about 6 feet, then splits into two 5" ducts. These ducts need to serve over half the house, but not surprisingly, produce very little airflow.

What we're left with is two bedrooms and a bathroom that are always about 10 degrees off from the rest of the house.

We've had estimates out for redoing the ducts, but they run in the 3k-4k range, and we just don't have that much money to spend after putting in a new furnace over the summer.

Do people think putting an inline duct fan right after the bend in the 6" would work? Or would we be subject to back pressure because the ducts get smaller (even though they get smaller after a 2 way split).

Is there anything else that might work, other than running some new ducts?

Thanks, and sorry for the long post, but I thought the more info, the better..

David
