Trane furnace choices:XR95 or XV95 or XL95 ?

Hello, experts!

I read everything I could about Trane and still can't figure out which furnace is best for my needs.

According to the calculations I need a 60,000 BTU furnace and a 2 ton AC. I live in Pittsburgh, PA.

The question is about reliability and comfort:

XL95 communicating furnace - sounds great, but I am concerned with reliability

XV95 - a winner ?

XR95 - may be 1 stage heat is not great for Pittsburgh weather.

Should I go with the authorized dealer? What if the price is too high? The equipment is covered by Trane either way. Am I wrong?

XV95.

You will need a two stg thermostat for best operation.

What are you doing about AC?

Tigerdunes! Thank you !!!!! Got some peace of mind.

AC - thinking of XR15 15 SEER, but may be save ($) and go with XR13.

XL is probably expensive.

Was caught up in work last 2 days. Tigerdunes, you said "A word of caution. Manufacturer literature can be misleading. Yes, the 602 thermostat will work. But it is not a true two stage thermostat and you would be running on high stage most of the time whether needed or not. The 602 by being the wrong stat totally shortchanges the capability and function of a nice two stage furnace like the XV95." Can you please let me know which Trane t-stat is a true 2-stage one. Or is it better to use some non-Trane product instead? I will appreciate any recommendations. Also, regarding "code for your location regarding condensate draining" , I have confirmed that township code requires condensate to be drained inside the house. And for me that's the slop sink in the lower level:-( I have a question regarding an additional return. One installer mentioned that I need to add a return in the lower level (there is none currently) and that it will cost about $400 since they have to put in ducts etc. Another installed said that they could simple cut an inner wall and put a register that hooks into the current return from upstairs at a cost of about $50. Which of these options makes sense? One final question: I am close to making a decision. Is it considered acceptable to ask the preferred installer to give me a better price? How is this approach viewed by professionals in this business? Thanks a lot for your help and Mike too!

ionized - thanks for the comment and I will definitely look into adding a humidifier later on vs at the beginning. I moved from a house in the North Hills that was your typical 1950's Pittsburgh Cape Cod and in the winter we had a big problem with static which I would like to dry to avoid in my new home. I realize I might be off the mark for my reason on humidity control but in general, I just want to do this system right because I have that option. to all - can anybody give me a range that I should be paying for a new high efficiency system (as spec'd above) from either Trane, Carrier, Amana/Goodman, or York for my size house? Quotes as mentioned before are on top of each other so thats what makes me comfortable with them but it would be nice to hear from someone on here as a sounding board. I agree that having nat gas heat for your home makes your home more attractive at time of placing it on the market. Trane use to underwrite their labor ext warranty through a third party. It was a good warranty unlike most of the third part warranties available that are problematic and just short of fraud in many instances. Be careful here. If you plan on selling your home, I see no need for an ext warranty. If you do decide on purchasing a warranty, you want to understand it along with exclusions and if it is transferable to your home's new owner. IMO

XL95 is a high eff 95% two stage furnace with conventional blower motor. The XV95 is also a high eff furnace, 2 stage with var speed blower motor. Much nicer. I would not have the XL95 unless it was for rental property. If wanting a single stage furnace over the nicer XV95, then go with the XT95 furnace. All these furnaces are reliable and have been around quite awhile! you should be aware that Am Standard sister company to Trane offers the exact same models usually less expensive. IMO

And I do prefer using authorized dealers.

Both XR13 and XR15 are nice condensers. Weigh the cost difference vs the potential savings. You do want a Trane coil, no third party coil substitute.

I also suggestive good 4-5" pleated filter media cabinet.

Can you tell us to what kind of 'calculations' you refer? How about sensible and latent loads?

Filter cabinet sounds good, but that's an additional expense. I may not be able to pull it all off.

I just used an online calculator, where you enter the square footage of the house, very simple. I do realize that it's not accurate, but different online calculators give me similar results: from 41,000 - 48,000 BTU furnace. You are not going to approve the approach, but that's all I can do.

Right off of the bat, you could take 2 identical homes 1000 feet apart, but oriented differently. Each might have different heat loss/gain properties.

You could spend $50 and do it yourself. Take a look at hvaccomputer.com. You can try out the software to get the feel of it. won't give you any results. Need to fork over the cash.

P.S., don't add any fudge factors; already built in. Note: Always make sure that the a/c unit you choose has the necessary sensible capacity.

One thought.

Assuming your heating load calc is accurate, you might check with a Carrier/Bryant dealer about a closer sizing match on a two stg var speed furnace.
