First, we love our whole house vac system.

We store all our "stuff" downstairs, the basement. All the attachments are in a bag and I installed hangers on the wall for the bag and hose.

My system is wet/dry, so I have a wet hose [with water spraying hose inside] and dry hose [with electric cord for power head inside].

In other words, twice the cleaning, but twice the paraphenilia.

Mine would easily store in a 2x2 closet, I currently keep it in the space behind the laundry door, about 1x3 feet.

If this is new constuction, go with plenty of outlets so you can use shorter hoses. Just one extra outlet on each floor would have let me drop my hose size from 30 to 20 feet, which would have made a big difference everytime I use it.

We have a Nutone CV-750 that hangs in the basement. The 35' hose loops over a carrier much like one would use for a garden hose. A bag of attachments hangs on the carrier as well. The powered carpet head stores on the floor below the carrier. We mounted the carrier on the side wall of a broom closet that is 18" deep (looking at the carrier) 16" wide (side with the door for access) with the carrier mounted at 66" to the top. This gives room to spool the hose. If you have the carrier on the back wall with access directly to the front it requires 12" or so in depth and 18" in width.

Our inlets are mounted at 36" high to make it easier to insert the hose. We often pass the hose end fitting through the loop in the attachment bag before inserting it in the inlet and hang it on the fitting to make them close at hand.

We have a Vacuflo. Central vac is one of my favorite things about our new house. I have two sets of hoses and brushes. One set I store in a hall closet on my main floor. The other set I store in the bottom of the linen closet.
I will get a third set for the basement when I can.
I don't want to even have to carry the hose from floor to floor - even though it is really light.
I don't think you need to make a specific space for the hose and attachments. They are not that big or bulky.

Our hose is stored in a "broom-closet" cabinet in the laundry room, on a wall bracket on the inside of the cabinet. The small attachments are in a drawer in the same run of cabinets. Picture a run of cabinetry with a floor to ceiling cabinet on the left (the broom closet part) and a run of counter height cabinets to the right of that, with a line of 4 double trash can pullouts (awesome for sorting laundry) with drawers above. The broom closet holds the hose, the hard floor attachment and the carpet attachment.

One thing I really wish I had done is to install a vacuum outlet at the location where the hose is stored. Since it is in my laundry room, I could have used it to suck the lint out of the lint trap, etc. Also, sometimes you have something small that you want to vacuum out (school backpack full of crumbs, anyone?) and if you could just take the item to the hose location, not having to unroll the whole thing and plug it in elsewhere, life would be grand!

We have a Beam and have been very happy with it (3 years).

Thank you all for responding, you all provided helpful info. There are going to be other places in the house the hose and attachments could go, so I'll have to work on DH a bit. Knowing how much space is needed will help me a great deal! But based on what youÂve told me, I could probably design the hutch to conceal the vac access if I canÂt sway by DH.

Eal51 Â we could put our hose and other stuff in the basement, but we should have room on the ground floor. I know IÂll vac more often if I donÂt have to drag everything up the stairs. IÂve been doing that for years with our current canister vac; not too enjoyable.

Oruboris  I had never thought about a wet/dry system; that might be something to consider! More outlets and shorter hoses is a great idea, too.

Arbordomus  Thank you for providing the height of the space needed and the great description of your space. The 36" height on the mounting of the inlets/outlets is a good idea, too. I donÂt think we have marked those on our preliminary plan yet.

Chefnewbie  IÂm totally with you about not wanting to carry the hose from floor to floor. WeÂll only have the first floor and a basement.

finally - I really like your suggestion for having an outlet in the laundry room! That is an excellent idea! And the 4 double trash cans pullouts with drawers above is also a great idea! I have worked on the layout for the laundry room yet; I'll have to see if that would work. I believe the vac stuff and the outlet can be done in the laundry roomÂjust have to convince DH that it is the best place.
