Much easier to just buy some cream horn molds. If you used foil I would expect the expanding dough would crush the foil all out of shape and render your project funky, if not useless.

One of the comments was that a lady had used paper cones that she then covered in foil.

How about using a sugar cone wrapped in tinfoil. I am trying this out! I am such a sucker for cute things even if it involves making a huge mess and wasting my time. No one understands this. I decorated sugar cubes one time and the flack I from people from this. Wow. BTW I am too cheap to buy the required material to do things properly so I usually end wasting time and money trying different options. Sometimes you just never learn.

But Cookie, you have so much fun doing it!

Buying 8 cones would be the perfect answer, but just expensive. I was just trying to find a less expensive way. Any other thoughts? Thank you!

After googling them, they really aren't that expensive. You can get six for $3.50 at kitchen emporium. Not bad if you intend to use them. Too bad shipping is $40.00 - just kidding. Check it out if you are serious.

My favorite site has the horns for $2.95 for SIX. Not sure how much shipping would be but let us know if you get them.

Those are totally cool. I'm going to make them next time I make bread. Yeah, cones are pretty cheap. I actually got all of mine at flea markets, but I've rarely seen them for more than four or five bucks. Buy local and save shipping if you want to get them nice and cheap. I thought of using sugar cones and covering with foil too. Think that would work fine.

I should have looked online at cone prices--thanks, friends! The prices are good!!

Thank you!

Thanks for the link, Trudymom. What a charming idea!

Hey Trudymom. I made them and I used ice cream cones (regular cone shaped ones and not sugar cones) wrapped in tin foil. I also used Pillbury breadsticks (I was too lazy to make bread dough). They turned out perfectly. I made mini ones and large ones. Too bad I have nothing to fill them with. I took a picture and if I can find my photobucket account I will post it. I think the little ones are more practical as the large ones are pretty big and would be a rather large meal. Thanks again for the link. Plus, the cones still seem usable!

Got it.

Good job cookie8! They really are cute. I'd have to be making some chicken salad to go in them.

Here's your pic

cookie8, thanks for trying them out. You did a great job!!--and that was smart of you to use the breadsticks! Did you put an egg wash on them?--they look so shiny and pretty!! Any other hints for us?

Thank you!

cookie8 they turned out great! I'm also going to be trying them. I think they would be so good as a bread option for our next big family dinner. I'm a garage sale shopper and I happen to have about 10 metal cones, I got for a few $$..

Very nice, and I agree that it was very clever to use the breadsticks. They have been on my to try list, ever since I saw them on their blogsite.

Well after reading this thread, I bought some cream horn cones and had to try this!

I also used Pillsbury breadstick dough but mine did not come out as pretty as yours did Cookie8.

Here's mine just out of the oven; going to fill them w/chicken salad.....

shaun, yours are gorgeous!! Any hints for us when making them?

OH trudy thanks but I like Cookie's better....... I love shiney and I completely forgot to put an eggwash on them. So I like her's better.

HInts? Well I tried making a snake out of the dough and wrapping that around the cone and I just couldnt get it to work.

I sprayed the cones w/Pam so that may have been my problem. This dough from Pillsbury says UNgreased cookie sheet. Oh well, .....

What worked for me was taking the breadstix apart and gently stretching the dough to fit around the cone.

But I do like the look of how Cookie's are; they seem like she made a "snake" out of her dough and then wrapped the cone. I like that look better.

Ok, I bought some cones today. I had called and they said they had 6" ones but when I got there they were only 4 1/2" How long were the ones that you used. I also bought some breadstick dough. I'm all ready now...

I can not wait to make these. This weekend I am going to buy cones. Hope they turn out as pretty as these posted pictures. Thanks all.

I dont know the size of mine!! I threw the packaging away.

BUT they are small. Smaller than an icecream cone. When I got them in the mail,I was actually shocked at how small they were but they worked fine. Just had to eat 2 or 3 sandwiches hahahah!!

I forgot about these (already, I know). I like them thinner like yours. I brushed mine with melted butter at the end. I forgot the egg wash too and found they looked a little flat looking so brushed on some butter. I like the small ones better myself - you can stuff them with flavoured cream cheese or plain and not have it be too much. The big ones I ended filling with tuna and it was way too much for a meal. Well, I could easily finish it but shouldn't. I will google the cones again and may request some for my birthday. Still want to try with bread dough (off note, I rented Artisan Bread in 5 minutes and love it) have some dough in the fridge - this may inspire me. Easier than it seems don't you think, Shaun and they look so good for the little effort that goes in (I didn't give it much).
