whirlpool duet wfw9400sw washer and wed9600tw dryer: match?

Thinking of buying the Whirlpool Duet FL washer and dryer, models as follows and have a couple of questions:

Considering the non steam washer WFW9400SW

And the steam dryer WED9600TW

1. Does anyone have this particular combination and/or know if the white colors match. (whirlpool calls the washer color white and the dryer color silver metallic on white but the pictures look the same and the salesperson says the whites are the same)

2. Is the hose that needs to be run from the washer to the dryer to use steam in the dryer compatible with the 9400 washer?

First the color business. You really need to look at them in a store OR if you order them, look at them on the loading dock before delivery. We ordered the 9400 pair in biscuit color but epinions had two people saying the washer & dryer were different shades of color. AND they were right. The washer made in Germany was a different color shade than the dryer made in Ohio. The store loading dock people verified that with us and it was no big hassle because they were never delivered.
The HOSE question-- Your new steam dryer will come with a simple Y connector (available at any hardware store also)
One end connects to the wall or faucet outlet and the other two hoses run off to the washer and dryer. They will provide you with the dryer hose along with the dryer.

Let me clarify; I'm just looking for feedback on these dryers and also would like to know if there is a similar machine by another manufacturer that anyone would suggest instead. I'm asking because Whirlpool Duet wasn't highly rated in Consumer Reports; neither was Bosch. First in CR was a GE and then an LG Tromm (which I thought had read was unreliable on this forum). In JD Powers surveys, Whirlpool was dead last but Bosch was the top-rated brand. Not much information when I try to compare the two sources. I'm just looking for a good dryer (it doesn't have to match perfectly) that will stand on a pedestal side-by-side with my Duet washer and not look too terrible with it. I don't anticipate ever needing to stack them.

UPDATE Ack - well, I'm still scared about the LG - but let me tell you where things stand. Thank you all for your advice - I was reading everything before I went out yesterday afternoon. Checked out the Whirlpool Duet, Sports, Bosch and LG yesterday. Thought I was decided on the Duet from a local appliance place until I checked out the LG at Best Buy. In part b/c the LG is about 2" less deep than the Duet (and therefore a better fit for our space - the Duet would just fit - if it fits at all) - we decided to go with the LG. Decided to bite the bullet and go with the 2487 - for $300, let's get STEAM! Well, we need a machine right away and the 2487 was on backorder and couldn't be delivered till March 18 - unacceptable! So - long story short(er) Best Buy brought the price of the 2688 washer and dryer down to the price of the 2487 (plus $40)! How could we pass that up? Plus 2 years 0% interest and $250 off to match a sale at Home Depot! The price of the 2688 came out to $1149 which I think (correct me if I'm wrong) is a great price for the 2688. Pedestals were $179.99 each! (we decided not to stack) and I need to see if I can find them for less anywhere. Of course, now I am still freaking out over the amount of $$ this will be and wondering if I should (a) - just go back to a much less expensive - but good top loader or (b) look for a less expensive frontloader (maybe the LG 1812 or WM 0462 recommended by consumer reports) - I never imagined I would even contemplate spending so much on a washer/dryer. I figure I have until tomorrow to cancel the order (washer being delivered Wednesday) and I am still SO CONFUSED! Any additional advice welcome - I really don't *need* all these bells and whistles - going to think long and hard today about whether there is a less $$ FL out there that would still suit our purposes. (as cool as steam is - we just don't *need* it). Thanks for all of the advice so far and I'd appreciate any other thoughts and comments! oh yeah - dross - I agree with you that I'm not counting on 15-20 years which is why I am so freaked out by this purchase. I went into Lowe's today and purchased a bare bones top loader washer and dryer. I wasn't going to get another Whirlpool, but I've gotten to know and trust a nice lady that works there, and she said she has had great feedback on this model....including from a relative who normally buys the most expensive bells and whistles of everything. I don't recall the whole model number, but it had the numbers 5300 in it. They had to order me a set because they sold out, but will be delivered in a week. Hopefully, I can keep the Duet limping along. The nice part? Both the washer and dryer are less than the cost of a front load washer alone. If they last only 5 years I won't be as torked. I didn't want a computer board, and I wanted to be able to select my own water levels. I don't waste water and have enough sense to wash my clothes without a computer. Any repairs on this machine should be simple. I found someone who wants my Duet washer and dryer and I am giving it to them. They understand that they will need either a computer board and/or motor for the washer. I'm guessing a motor. The dryer still works fine. I didn't feel right trying to sell them. If I find that I can't fit a quilt in the TL washer, I MAY purchase an extremely cheap front load washer and set it up in the barn. At least it would have a new warranty and only be used sometimes (only for our quilts or mattress pads). I don't know how good they are, but there was a Frigidaire FL for $399. It may be junk. I wouldn't want it for everyday, but for what I need it for, it might be fine. It's cheaper than fixing the Duet.

Thank you for replies, they're highly appreciated. Our apartment is on the first floor. I've been to hhgregg yesterday to see LG and Duet in person. I liked both but still not 100% sure, they looked like plastic toy, especially LG's display and pedestal seem made of flimsy plastic. HE5tv vs. Duet, which one is better and why? (if I'm not mistaken, they're both manufactured by Whirlpool?) Does anyone own them, how do they work? Did you have to take to the repair? How often did it broke? How long have you owned them? Sorry for too many questions, I just want to rely on consumer reviews not a product description.

We bought the new Duet aspen green steam machines, primarily because of noise and vibration issues with the other brands. We like the washer-- the dryer still does not work properly after two service calls. Sensor dry will not turn off the machine-it just keeps going and going and going like the energizer bunny !!!

My son was in the process of deciding on a Whirlpool Duet pair last week at this time, and we came to the same conclusion as you. One appliance was described as white and the other one was described as being a silver metallic. If you are spending this much money-you very much want them to look good and match.
My son wasn't wild about getting a steam washer. The reason for this was because this steam washer thing is new technology and sometimes, you are just asking for trouble-the more features an appliance has. He did, however, want the steam dryer. The benefits seemed to out weigh the drawbacks. Again-more technology-more potenial service calls in the future.

He eventually decided on the 9500 Whirlpool Duet Series in the steam washer and steam dryer in the Tuscan Chestnut color. He wanted a matching pair-and the 9600 Duet series in the green color was just too much to spend. As it was, the 9500 Duet series was probably more than he should have spent, too.
