Sharon and Clive rolled into St. Louis for lunch today. It was an all too brief visit, but it was so much fun getting to meet, and it felt like I'd met them many times before. Sharon mentioned that they wanted to try some St. Louis BBQ, so we went to Pappy's in midtown. Oh, baby...them baby backs! We ordered the Big Ben - a slab of ribs, pulled pork sandwich, beef brisket sandwich, chicken quarter and double orders of baked beans & sweet potato fries. YIKES!!

Oh, and here's me and Sharon:

Next was a quick but necessary stop for photo op at a wonderful historic hotel here:

Then it was on to a can't-miss St. Louis institution, which just happens to be on the original Route 66:

For the uninitiated, frozen custard is ice cream with egg yolks added. (all arteries may leave the room now.)

It's then churned so it comes out like soft serve, and you can have stuff mixed in if you feel the calories and fat are still skimpy ;) But wait, there's more! Ted Drewe's features the "Concrete", which is so thick you can turn your cup upside down and it doesn't fall out. Clive and Sharon got the Southern Concrete - with praline pecans and butterscotch. I had the Fox Trot Concrete -- fudge, raspberries and macadamia nuts. I think we all pretty much felt like concrete after all of that food!

Sadly, their time was short, but we still got plenty of yakking in. We parted from Ted's parking lot....Clive insisting that they had to go back a block to the car wash because "there was dust on the Thunderbird". Snort. There are more photos to come - Sharon will post when she gets a chance...there are some goodies in her camera :) Thanks Sharon & Clive, for a great afternoon!!!

Tinan, I would say your definition of "harm" and mine are different. Having all the insulation eaten off your car's engine wires, sitting outside in your driveway, causing a $1,200 repair bill not *relatively* harmless. I respectfully disagree with your observation. My neighbor and his brand new Jag were not happy, nor did they consider the roof rats responsible for that damage *relatively* harmless. Roof rats have also destroyed several of my fruit trees by girdling them (now have chicken wire around trunks), as well as eaten large amounts of my citrus at my expense. Of course risk of disease will be higher if rats invade your home, garage or storage sheds, but they are still not *relatively* harmless even outside. As Renee has provided for us, careful trapping can keep the population down, and reduce damage and harm to both yourself and your property. I have successfully trapped and poisoned the rats to the point of keeping the damage down to reasonable levels, but I will always battle them out here where I live, due to ideal living conditions for roof rats. Even with all the predators I have in my area, Barn owls, Great Horned owls, Red Tailed hawks, Red Shoulder hawks, White Tailed kites, Peregrine Falcons, American Kestrels, Sharp Shinned hawks, coyotes, bobcats, roadrunners and weasels. All these predators I see on a daily basis still cannot keep our rodent population down, so I assist to keep my property from harm. Patty S.

"if I send you a little shovel think you can "rustle" me up some rhizomes?" For a little shovel like I hear Jolana keeps in her purse I would do about anything! We could have used something when we were scratching around in the dirt with our fingernails trying to find seeds to Black brush Acacia at ARE. It had such pretty thick, almost curly dense foliage, it didn't even look like an acacia. We found four seeds. "And, hey, if worse comes to worse, I'll promise to bail you and your cohorts out." You got a deal! But since I didn't have that 'said' shovel I was reduced to searching for ripe seeds of which I found plenty. Someone on here told me they will bloom their first season (not like Jim's amarilis that took three years) and they were right. So I'm eager to see what these seeds produce when I plant them in the spring. Pink sunburst were the only variety in the group so they won't be mixed. Shirley, the foliage on Tropicana is wonderful. Well, a couple of times we almost gave up and canceled the whole trip, but we really wanted to go!! If I hadn't been able to book that early morning train, we probably would have just given up, but luckily we made it. And yes, I certainly did my bit for the economy! I got a great copper watering can shaped like a beehive, three miniature African violets and one normal size one and pots for all of them, two pots for my orchids, a bamboo windchime, and a stained glass vase as a gift for my SIL who's birthday is next week. I also paid way, WAY too much money for some hand made wooden spoons and spatulas, but I couldn't resist them! Then at the market I got some hand made soaps, beeswax candles, a pair of earrings for my daughter's birthday, candy for everyone back home, and before we left Monday we hit the Amish stalls and I got sticky buns, some noodles and some thick cut bacon. I would have gotten a lot more things but I knew I already had more than I could lift!! The Indian restaurant was called something at the Ben - I have the name at home, but I can't think of it right now. It was a few blocks away from the convention center and actually wasn't in the greatest place for foot traffic. I have had Indian food many times, but haven't actually gone to many Indian restaurants, and the people we were with said it was expensive for Indian food (about $18-$24 for entrees), but they gave you a lot - we really could have split a few of the dishes as we didn't make a dent in some of them. But the food was fantastic and the restaurant itself was lovely. The Vietnamese place was right down the street from us and that food was fantastic as well. I would have liked to try a few more things at the market, but where we lost so much time I only got to eat lunch there once. But we did pick up some stuff to munch on in the hotel room, some wonderful cheeses - my new favorite is St. Andre! - spicy shrimp and a whitefish spread that I wasn't sure I'd like, but it was wonderful. My pants were way tight by the time we left lol!! And my sister now has power and phone lines back altho her fridge and dishwasher apparently got fried when the power came back on so she's none to happy, but hopefully she can get them fixed and not have to buy new! Then there's all those trees to take care of - they had more than 10 come down around their property! Lisa

Been using my girlfriend's recipe for a while now: BeansÃ¢ÂÂs Twice Bakes - Cheesy 6 large potatoes 1 package cream cheese (8oz), softened 1 stick butter, softened 1/2 c. cheddar cheese, shredded (pepper jack is good too) Salt & pepper to taste Green onion or scallions, sliced 1/4 c. shredded cheddar cheese Wash & bake potatoes. Slice in half (reserve skins), scoop out insides & mix together cream cheese, butter, cheddar cheese, salt & pepper. Stuff mixture back into potato skins, top with remaining cheese & green onions. Bake 400ÃÂº for 20 to 30 minutes. (Of course, I have to overload the butter and cheese)

Pella Tulip time? Letters, baloney, rouladen and all? Iowa wine? maybe not...
The surf ball room and a tribute to the Big Bopper and Buddy Holly? maybe a trip toCedar Rapids and the home of Grant Woods?
how about a trip to Agency and the original Roesann and Tom Loose meat sandwich? No? LOL!
Maybe a place that offers simply the best pork tenderloin sandwich?
They are way too early for the Iowa State Fair....the biggest and the best....offering the most deep fried carp on a stick!

Oh wow, look at that BBQ! the "concrete" sounds good too, especially that chocolate/raspberry/macadamia nut stuff, yum.

Hi, Chase, I see St. Loooooie was all prepared for you too, LOL.

Dust on the Thunderbird? How in the world did that happen? Travel safely....

Too short a visit!!!!

Wendy , thanks so much for a great afternoon......needless to say we have not eaten since and may never eat again!!! The food was soooooo good, I mean really good! Pappy's is a crazy place, 25 -30 minute line ups. The place was packed aand it was lunch hour on a Wednesday!!!! Oklahoma will have a way to go to beat this....the rib and pulled pork battle is on!

Wendy and I drove together to the dessert venue which gave us a chance to yap as Wendy pointed out some of the amazing architecture in St. Louis. Very eclectic city and I'm glad I had a chance to get her personal perspective. I'll be back some day.

As you can see from the picture Weed posted above, St Louis felt a need to follow New York and Chicago in naming a landmark after me...I'm sure construction is underway in Tulsa as we speak.

Here is a pic of Wendy and I at the frozen custard spot...to die for...literally! It was so special to really enjoy the wonderful desserts at such an authentic rte 66 landmark.

Wendy blew Clive away in more ways than one but her car drove him over the top.

Wendy and I got along so well we decided to pull a Thelma and Louise and head out on Rte 66 ourselves...Clive is somewhere back in St Louis!!

Thanks so much for everything Wendy, wish it could have been longer and I look forward to entertaining you Canadian style sometime soon !

YIKES! is right! What did you do with the leftovers?? Looks like a great time. The photo of Sharon at Chase Park Plaza reminds me of my BIL's visit to Culver City - his mother's maiden name is Culver, and so he posed in front of a few Culver signs, of which there are many in Culver City.

I'm not familiar with St. Louis barbeque - what does that mean? I'm really only familiar with Texas barbeque, as I have not traveled extensively east, except for New Orleans and New York.

Looking forward to seeing Sharon & Clive in L.A.!

OK, the car story is funny. When I heard Sharon & Clive were driving route 66 in a TBird convertible, I was thinking it was a '57 or perhaps an early 60's model. (my dad was/is a collector, I just assumed theirs would be an older model.) So I thought it would be fun to borrow one of my dad's cars for the day, to fit in with the whole Route 66 thing and park next to theirs. I'm almost to the restaurant, and I call Sharon to ask what year their car is. "2002". LOL!!! I laughed at myself and my incorrect assumption for a good 5 minutes.

I am LOVING this travelogue. How fun to see all these cool places and pictures of friends meeting face to face! We are only a few hours from St. Louis-may have to go and check out that BBQ place.
