FYI: Heat pumps tend to be oversized to compensate for central and north heating applications while giving up some AC efficiency and comfort benefits.

duct leakage can be mininized if all ducts, plenums, supply boxes & return air are mastic sealed. not duct tape, not foil tape. paint on mastic applied nickel thick or mastic tape like Hardcast brand 1402 mastic tape. x2 mike's post. also, 13 SEER a/c just meets the legal mininum allowed by law (code) 15-17 SEER heat pumps will provide a better savings & quickly re-coup the extra costs. variable speed air handlers will help to handle summertime relative humidity. get the load calc based on your plans, specific insulation values & types, orientation, window shgc & ufactors. building a home this size invest in an independent load calculation (manual J) duct sizing & design. then shop the load calc you own to hvac companies. have enteries in load calc based on design temps for your area & reflect the specifics of your build. hvac should be sized for average temps and not the 5 days per year of extreme temps. this is why there are specific design temps to be used. otherwise the hvac companies will run a quick load not release it to you until you sign a contract and you get what they decide to make the load calc verify. it is common practice to not release load calc as homeowner can use the company that did the calc's to shop job to other companies. foam insulating the roofline will put ducts in semi conditioned space & save you about 20-30% in energy costs. upgrading to foam will also reduce tons of hvac required. take it a step further & use foam sheathing on exterior walls, tape the seams & caulk it air tight. a tight home is an efficient home. bid one mentions fresh air intake. this MAY be necessary but should be planned for & designed. damper is set to cubic feet per minute (cfm) of air required by ASHRAE 62.2 ventilation strategy, not just a random amount. blower door testing of house, duct testing of ducts should also be done. oversized hvac systems cost more upfront to purchase, more to operate, contribute to high RH in the home. sizing the systems is the best investment that you can make now for comfort and affordability. think about hiring an efficiency expert. resnet.us is a good place to start. best of luck.

Hi All First post here and would like to ask for some assistance from this group on our pool bid. First off, I am having sticker shock, but know that if you want it done right, you have to pay. The question here is related more to what is included in the bid and if there is anything missing or something that I should add or delete from the specifications. Any help or comments are appreciated. TEXT FROM BID IS BELOW: Attached is the revised quote for the pool and spa. As you requested, I have moved the spa away from the pool 3 feet or so, modified the size to an 8 dia. round, and made it a separate entity, although still on one mechanical system. The piping and valves will be configured so that you will be able to winterize the pool and operate the spa year around. The piping trench for the spa lines will be insulated with 2" rigid polystyrene foam board and carefully bedded in clean sand. The pool-spa heater has also been increased to a Lochinvar ERN-402 (399,000 BTU from 300,000 BTU) to accommodate the larger water surface area (1000, sq. ft. to 1250 sq. ft.) Also, I left the interior pool finish options the same price as the 20X50 pool. they all took longer than a week to respond. if i recall it went like this: contractor 1: replied in approx 1.5 weeks. bid lacked a lot of detail and he missed some key details. couple of his portfolio pictures had things that i would never find acceptable. he was referred to me by my plumber. NEXT. contractor 2: referred to me by a local tile guy. gc showed up late and was taking cell phone calls half the time he was meeting with me. he half heartedly scribbled down some notes and i never did receive a quote. ~6 weeks after the meeting he sent me an email telling me he had not forgotten about me and did i still want that quote. i told him i had found another GC by then. he seemed bummed and made another feeble attempt but by that time the ship had sailed. NEXT. contractor 3: he came to meeting, ask a lot of questions, inspected the proposed area, wrote a lot down, took measurements, raised some good questions, asked more questions, sent me emails and eventually got me a quote. it took about 4 weeks to get the quote. quote was almost double what i expected paying. i practially fell out of the chair during the meeting. stay tuned on contractor 3. contractor 4: showed up, asked me some questions, took some notes and about 8 weeks later sent me a bid. lacked detail and he missed the deadline by 1 month. NEXT. so guess who i went with? i negotiated the scope of work with GC contracting firm # 3 and went with them. it took 4 weeks to get the quote and it was worth the wait -detailed down to the line item. he was the only one that caught some issues that would have been surprises to the other GC's. i did some of the work myself to save money and broke the project into 2 phases to take advantage of energy credits that were around at the time and to allow me time to save more out of pocket funds to help pay for project. i did have to increase my budget as well. GC firm #3 was not flawless - there were issues on the project but by far he was the best choice of the ones i met with. keep in mind they are working on several projects at once. while i want to believe it, they are not sitting by the phone waiting for my call. :)
