Miele W4842 vs 4840

Hi all, we're closing in on purchasing a Miele w/d and would appreciate some input. We're trying to decide between the IntelliQ 200 vs 100 which i think are Canadian versions of the W4842 and W4840 respectively. The 200 has 19 programs instead of 10, the LED display and delayed timer and we're trying to determine whether these extra features are worthwhile. For those who have the W4842, how useful do you find the extra programs like dress shirts, jeans, outerwear etc. Do you use these often or just the basic settings like Normal? Has anyone actually washed a king down quilt in one and what were the results? One final question, did you opt for the pedestals or were the machines perfectly fine on the floor? Thanks for any input.

Love the W4842. I use really use the Comforters Setting all the time, and the Beach Towels makes a great pre-rinse for sandy or dusty kid clothes...or beach towels :)

Also the Clean Machine Cycle offered on the W4842 is so great. The amount of water it uses is awesomely high!! Love it.

Count down timer is so nice to have as well. I would highly recommend spending the little bit extra, and getting the 'top of the line'. Then there are NEVER any regrets!!!

Sorry...Yes, we got the pedestals. They make the height so great for putting laundry into the washer, and then transferring to the dryer. The pedestals also hold a lot, including a Miele canister vacuum...seriously. It's handy to have the vacuum in the laundry room, to do weekly vacuuming of the dryer lint cavity. Practical.

I own the Miele 4842 and have had it for 8 years now. I really love it. It gets the clothes clean, even if you rarely see water in the drum. Magical. I just recently had a problem with it, for the first time. It threw a fault code F63, which is the water intake unit. It threw the code a year before, but kept working, so I thought this time I should investigate more, before it actually stops working. With help through this forum and youtube, I learned how to take the lid off the machine, open up the water path unit whilst still attached inside my machine. I was told to look for alignment of timing gears. The white gear was not flush with the red gear. So my husband found a tiny washer, placed it under the white gear. We put it back together and tahhhhhh dahhhhhhhhh, it works again. The only cost was time and a washer we already had. Admittedly, without everyone's help here on the forum, who told us what size screwdriver to use and what to look out for, the fix would have taken a longer time for us to figure out. I really like this machine.

4842 and 9802 were delivered today. 1st impressions: First - we loved our Asko's and hated to see them go. Install was simple stuff - the crew was in and out in about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. They assembled the washer / dryer on the stands while in the truck. Getting the washer downstairs was a chore for two big guys. Installer said the washer (on stand) weighs nearly 350. The pair is a beast on the stands. Coming from our little Asko's - this pair is huge. Fit and finish is excellent. The stands are very nice - soft close doors, a place to set a basket on - well made (ought to be for the $$). The washer is almost silent until it spins up - and then it is not nearly as loud as the 1200rpm Asko it replaced. It does shake at full spin - did not walk or anything, but a clear shake. We did not consider the dryer to be noisy - but it clearly moves moves more air than any dryer we have had before. We did not install the solid aluminum vent pipe as recommended by sales person and folks on this forum. I bought it and installer encouraged us to try the flex aluminum vent pipe he brought with him. We agreed to try it and it was fine - returned the solid vent material today. The wife is very pleased - thought her first load of whites came out cleaner than the Asko - which is saying something. I talked her into these - would have been trouble if they did not perform at least as well as what she had. Quick wash (on cold) was about 30 minutes - Normal wash about an hour. More later after we get some experience.

Larsi, today we went to set up return for Electrolux washer that was having problems. The guy at appliance who sold it to us said that we needed to call Electrolux, tell them the prob and ask for a R.C.M number, then call him with it and he will order me another one, so that they can get refunded from Electrolux. Electrolux wanted to send out a service repair. I told them that i didn't trust this machine due to the rubbing and had called the authorized repair man, told him the prob and he said he would ask for a new one, as this could be seal or tub or both. He said he wouldnt keep one that was bad from day one. So after Electrolux figured out i wasnt going the repair route, they told me to call the store and tell them they had a seven day return policy. Told her it was delevered last thurs.and that store was passing buck to them. Electrolux got the store on the phone, told them i said no repair and then electrolux said the 7 day return policy for a electrolux did not start until unit was delivered, not from purchase date! Store said it would get with their RCM people and that electrolux may give them some credit for it. I am not sure they will get full credit. Anyway, i should hear from store tomorrow to tell me that they have ordered me another set as the dryer was dammaged and they did not check it over before delivery. I don't think that it was my place to have to do all the leg work. It should have been store, but salseman said if i called that it would carry more weight. I think that he knew that i would be told to have it repaired and he just didn't want to tell us that. I will rest easier when they call tomorrow with a time line of when new set is in. They will reverse the dryer door as they didn't do it with this one even though i asked for it, but my DH was going to do it anyway. Fingers crossed i get a good set, no scratches, dents, or detergent tray that does not hang on the front corner which this one does. THEN, i will be in laundry heaven!!!!

Aside from the additional Mastercare programs the display offers on the 4842, it's worthy to mention it also leaves you with endless possibilities for updates. I wouldn't be surprised if Miele offers a PC update to add or improve upon existing Mastercare programs in the future as they suggest they do. I'm hoping if I bit_h enough i'll get a "Pillows" program one day. It also makes adjusting some of the programmable options much easier. I was disappointed I couldn't get a dryer with the same arrangement.The build quality of these machines you will notice right away. But itÃ¢ÂÂs not until you have been using them for a while, then take notice of some models in a local store, you realize how much better they are built. Your standards will never settle for anything less. YouÃ¢ÂÂve become use to how things should be built. As for the 5 year warranty and Remote Vision package I say YES. I think I paid less than $300 for both washer and dryer. These machines are solid but should they need a repair it's not cheap. As a side note, Remote Vision can be hard to configure to your network. In fact, the instruction I received were for configuring it running windows XP. I did a bit of complaining to the Remote Vision department since I have windows 7 and things have changed in those operating systems. Five weeks later I received notice additional programming instructions were now available for customer running windows Vista and 7. Do I thinks it's necessary my washer communicates it's status to Miele every hour and in the event of a malfunction, no. But it sure is cool...

Hi fellow Canadian! I got the W4842 last year (debated waiting for the IntelliQ but decided the few changes were not worth waiting for).

I am SO glad to have the display. As Larsi said, so nice to have the countdown display. It's nice to know how long a cycle will take. It is particularly useful when I'm using the delay timer as I know when to have the machine come on to have my laundry just finished when I get up ... my FAV feature. Get up - toss it in the dryer. This is excellent for cycles that take a long time - no waiting for it to finish.

I have the pedestals, my friend who has the W4840 does not. I like having mine elevated but hers do not bother me either. Miele seems to sit higher than most FL.

I often use the comforters setting and many other settings. Normal is the only setting where your new Miele will NOT use its internal heater. If you want to ensure a warm/very warm/hot/sanitary wash - choose another program.

The point (IMHO) of spending the money for the Miele is a) the build quality and hopefully longevity b) to use the various programs provided. I believe a lot of thought goes into them to treat your garments just so.

Anywho ... my two cents. Good luck - let us know what you get and how you like it. I LOVE my machines.
