Off the wall idea- any thoughts?

Can anyone think of a way to make a blind corner accessible from the top (no upper cabinets in the way to deal with)? Picture two banks of drawers completely closing off the corner space and then having one of those things that raise up a TV under a cabinet in the corner that could bring it up to counter height to get the stuff out... or maybe just use your Kitchen aid mixer and then send it back below. Not that I could convince my husband to install anything like this, but has anyone ever seen something similar in function?

Haven't seen anything like it, but I do believe it could be done & it would be waaaay cool!

Surely that cost doesn't include permit and engineer's stamp, which the 'garden center' should have told you may be required for a structure that high under that much pressure holding back that much weight, esp if it is above your house. Throughout the 9000 years since agrarian societies began, hillsides have been terraced and cut-filled to grow crops, as water running straight downhill is suboptimal at best and after the first thunderstorm throughout history every time folks became unhappy. So. Landscape timbers (4x4x8ft) hereabouts are ~US$1.00/ft so for two tiers at 3' each that is ((35*9)*2) [runs] + ((12*2)*6) [posts] = (630) + (144) = $774 just for timbers, then you'll need to drain which is ~150 for gravel & pipe and fabric and concrete should be ~75 and hardware should be ~200 so that's roughly 774+150+75+200 = $1200 just in 2 minutes of thinking about it. You'll need a path between the two so that's ~75 for gravel and 30 for fabric so you're at 1300+ just for that material, and tax at 7.5% is another ~100 so you're at 1400+. Figure 10% contingency for delivery and drill bit breaking and augur and such, and that's a cheap wall that'll hopefully last 10 years if you take your time and do it right and there's a couple dry years in there and slow melting a couple years. I agree with Les. I think a swing arm lamp by the chair would work well. I prefer the prints on the one wall, also. Can you find a small table, or even a plant stand, something with height, to add some knicknack next to the chair? That would help balance it. Also, if you can't get a swing arm lamp, moving the lamp to the opposite wall works. Actually...move the four prints to the other wall now, that might work better. Your room is so pretty! I love stuff on a coffee table, too, but with the chewy lab (been there, done that!) and the fact that you have a lot going on the sofa & the room in general, I'd just leave the table as negative space. It's a pretty table, and leaving it bare would seem to make it more friendly. A place to set your coffee cup or glass.

Yes -- both of the excellent solutions above will work. 1) Hide It! Basically hang curtains across the entire wall. You can still hang swing-arm lamps -- through the curtains -- on both sides of the bed which will add to the illusion. Plus add tiny bedside tables or cabinets to create more symmetry to the entire wall and room. 2) Deal with It! Okay -- the issue is to create visual balance using the principles or ideas of assymmetry. Do a VERY simple window treatment -- for example a sheer fabric -- inside the window frame. Add your bedside tables and lamps. Stand back and look again. Add artworks or something like black-and-white photos (frame in simple strong frames) -- maybe two or three or even a small gride of four to "balance" the window. This can be a bit tricky -- but it all depends on the size, number and shapes of the artworks. 3) Use it! Now this depends on your skills as a planner and carpenter .... create a wall of bookshelves around your whole bed. You MIGHT want to remove the frame around the window -- and build the shelves around it. OR you MIGHT want to cover it with the bookcases or shelves (yes -- remove the frame and frost the window first) Hope this helps!! Jan at Rosemary Cottage

Benjamin Moore has a pretty color called Cream and one called Rich Cream which is a little whiter and I used Linen White as my white for windows and trim. You can change the whole look of your room then with a throw and a couple of pillows with the seasons. An inexpensive sisal rug would give texture to the room and balanced the smoothness of the leather.

I believe some of the European cabinet makers have done things like this. Pogghenpohl, Snaderio, or Bulthaup maybe? I'd bet Antss would know instantly. He's knowledgeable on the Euro makers options. You might shoot him an email through GW if he has the capability and ask him to comment on this thread.

Speculating here, but you'd have to be OK with having a "crack" there in your counters and you possibly wouldn't want this on the same run as a sink. It could be subject to water infiltration if it were too close to the sink or ordinary crumb infiltration if close to a snack zone. I'm sure the servos have weight limits, so your counter choices might be limited.

I saw this on an HGTV or DIYnetwork show on the annual Kitchen and Bath Show for the trade:

They have a bunch of products that are pricey but very very cool, and possibly DIY if you're handy with servos or adapting a TV lift to make a bigger platform

think "silent butler" concept. Maybe pulled up an down by a rope like Jefferson used?

I think I would just put in a blind corner unit of some sort and put the heavy stuff elsewhere. Just because you have thought of it doesn't mean you need it. Spill something back there...let it drool down into the recesses...then try to clean it up.

Great idea. Wouldn't be difficult to do if you are having custom cabs built. We had a lift built into a cabinet for our TV (not in the kitchen though). The seam could be an issue, but as long as you don't do much prep there and it doesn't border the sink, I think it would work.
