Bosch Axxis vs. Miele W1113 Capacity

Is there a significant difference between the capacity of these two models? I didn't think so, but a sales person said the Bosch was 6kg and the Miele was 5kg. When I looked at product brochures and specifications on line, I couldn't see that much difference. Miele says the capacity is 1.9 cu. ft. and Bosch is 2.1 cu. ft. That's about 10%. Bosch also says the capacity in weight is 5.9 kg. I can't find any specification for weight for the Miele. I don't like the idea of paying extra for the Miele, but in our limited city installation, the big advantage of the Miele is that the dryer vents on the right. This offers a much cleaner installation. The Bosch, as far as I can determine, only vents on the rear or the left. Depth is a big concern in our space. Thanks in advance for your replies.

I was looking at the installation manual for the Axxis Dryer and it appeared at least to me that it could vent from either side, the back or the bottom. Venting from the side would require a special adapter and a special saw for cutting the hole in the panel. The manual can be found at:

We have a 4 y.o. Miele Incognito. The silverware tray makes it much easier to load IMO and is handy also for sink mats, small gadgets, sponges, scrubbers, Cuisinart discs, bottle caps, container tops etc. All those are thrown on where they fit around silverware. The tray holds way more silverware than a conventional basket by far. That's the main reason I will now buy a second Miele, this time an Optima. I'm looking at that because I don't need the complexities or expense of La Perla. Optima has a redesigned second basket now more friendly to bowls and mugs, a Turbo wash that's quicker than other cycles, the china/crystal cycle that I need and seems ideal for my purposes. No need for me to consider another brand but Bosch is also excellent, quiet and certainly less than La Perla though not necessarily that much less than other Mieles. You'd do well with either. If I decided not to go with Miele I'd look at Bosch and likely at F&P dish drawers.

Drying issues with Euro DW: All three do not dry plastics nearly as well as American DWs. It does not matter how much drying agent you put in the DWs. If you think about it, the water that collects in the divets of dishes actually pools there and has no chance of draining out. For that you need a well designed rack so that it is tilted as much as possible to help drain the water. This is where well designed racks make a huge difference with drying issue! In this, Bosch is the worst. In my household, Bosch also fits the least amount of our dishes. The glad plastic el-cheapo containers have a large divet where it collects water when you turn it upside down. I have used all three Euro DWs. For me, Miele is the hands down best, then my old Asko, then Bosch for rack design. Ineteresting enough, Miele has not changed their rack layout in many years. Whereas, Bosch and Asko tend to change them every few years. To me, the newer middle cutlery tray Asko looks rather odd and looks as if you can't really fit large dishes in there. I have NOT used it, however. My old Asko actually had a heating element at the bottom and it dried plastics fine with the element BUT I had to make sure plastic was NOT at the bottom rack. We decided not to use the heating element to dry, which was an option on the Asko. So when you compare the drying of all three without using the heating element on the Asko, they are all about the same, IMHO... I am not sure if the newer Askos have heating elements at the bottom like my old one did. Any how, if you want all your plastics to dry in the DW, I would skip the Euro ones. On the other hand, your plastics will last much longer in the Euro DWs. When I left the Asko heating element on, I often found that a plastic had fallen down and melted... This was one of the reasons I decided not to use the heating element.

Well, I'd take the 1918 in a heartbeat over anything else. I have been using 1918s for more than a decade and never a had problem with them. But it depends on what you want in washer. With a 1918 you're getting a washer with serious capacity for heating the water and many choices, but fewer factory-preset cycles. If all you ever do is use cold or cool, always use the same cycle settings, well, you don't need a 1918 for that. It's also a long-cycle default machine so if you want full cycles you'll have to factor that into your routine. Are you sure the vendor actually has 1918s and that the info is not just a left-over listing? Another thing is that you may not get the double-warranty-if-installed-by-a-Miele-tech if you order over the internet. I didn't use a Miele tech and have long-sinced past the warranty period with no need to call for any service so it wouldn't have mattered, anyway. Molly~

We bought the Bosch premium set, mainly because the extra capacity Mieles came out AFTER we had ordered and received the Bosch (and after our electical lines had been installed). If I were doing this over again, I would probably go with the Mieles because of the superior engineering and customer service, in addition to the features such as the honeycomb design (my son's soccer short drawstrings have gotten stuck in the Bosch's drum), durability, plus - and this is important - vibration, which I understand is somewhat less in the Mieles because of their use of hydraulic suspension. Bosch uses a lot more plastic inside and out. That being said, we've been quite happy with our Bosch W and D - partially because they replaced 20 year old Kenmores that didn't clean, used 50 gallons of water per load, and sounded like 10 cats were being strangled while loads were being washed. They use very little water, get our clothes very clean, accept delicate items, etc. We've learned to live with the vibration (even after the solution proposed by Bosch was to use double-sided tape on the floor...sigh). I also loved the fact that Mieles now come with stainless exteriors as an option, which I acknowledge as a cosmetic indulgence but pretty dandy in our pretty open laundry alcove in view of our all-stainless kitchen! Hello bestefar,

I have similar concerns about venting and space and will soon be getting a Miele. A few things I have learned:

1. When you vent a Miele from the sides, your available length of venting is shortened by quite a bit. So, if you are planning a circuitous/long run to vent your dryer keep this in mind (the downloadable pdf specs from Miele detail all of this).

However, there is good news in that in venting from the back you are not limited to requiring 4 inches of space for a 4" diameter vent conduit. Go to Lowes or some hardware store and you can find rectangular vents that will hook up to the back of your dryer and only require 2" of space in depth. They are also expandable in length. Man, it is so hard to describe this stuff. Here is an image that shows what such a device looks like. These are called periscopes. Do a search on this site for periscopes and several long notes will be found. My opinion is they can be a problem solver in certain situations, but they come at a price of significantly reducing your venting length. Few dryer manufacturers provide equivalent venting lengths for periscopes but I remember seeing one (maybe Fisher & Payel?) and it was worse than I originally imagined. If your just going up behind your dryer and directly out a back wall a periscope should be fine. If your making it part of a long and indirect route with multiple bends it's probably a very bad idea to use a periscope. Atleast on the big Miele dryer the penalty for venting out the side is much smaller than using a periscope.

Thanks for the tips. We were leaning toward the Bosch. It's a little bigger and a lot cheaper. I have asked two appliance dealers and the current Bosch only vents on the back and left. Earlier models provided more venting options. I did find a 2x6" vent that is similar to the periscope idea but vents to the right. I was thinking that might be the way to go, but if it's a big loss in efficiency, then maybe not.

I spoke with the Miele distributor in San Francisco on Saturday, and he said Miele is coming out with a new model late next year or early 2008 that will be 6.5 kg in the same footprint as the current 5 kg model. I'm tempted to wait. Of course there is no guarantee that the new model will vent on the right.

Do all Miele models offer the option of venting on the right?

Hi bestefar,

In doing my research, both the "standard" and "super" capacity Miele dryers could vent on all three sides.

BTW - My new Miele W/D are being delivered and installed on Thursday! I am so excited that I won't have to use my old combo unit anymore. The new Miele model sounds great, but I'm not willing to live with my current machine for that much longer.
