Bravos washers--what's the difference between these models?

We plan to buy a Maytag Bravos washer & dryer tomorrow and I have not been able to determine the differences between the MTW6700TQ and the MTW6600TQ.

The Maytag Web site is no help, as it contains very little info on the 6700, and some of the information it does contain is self-contradictory. I called Maytag customer service and spoke to two different reps--they simply read to me from a list that also contradicted the Web site, and neither was able to say in a general sense why a purchaser might choose one of these washers over another.

Once I find out how these washers compare, I'll also need to figure out how the corresponding dryers compare--the MED6400TQ and MED6600TQ.

Any help appreciated!

Hi!

The only two differences that I have noticed between the Bravos MTW6600TQ and the Bravos MTW6700TQ is that instead of the pre-soak option on the MTW6600, the MTW6700 has a fabric softener dispenser option that is to be pressed when using fabric softener.

The other difference was the design of the impeller. It's a bit different in the 6700 than in the 6600. I'm assuming that it was redesigned in the 6700 (the newer model) to address the tangling problem that some had with the impeller of the 6600 model. I could be wrong, though. I am not sure of any other differences. Maybe somebody else knows of others that I don't.

Yes, you are correct in that the Maytag website is very inaccurate and the info on the Bravos is pretty scarce.

By the way, my grandmother has a Bravos 6600 and absolutely loves it!! She has had no tangling problems with it at all.

As for the Bravos dryer, I or my grandmother do not own one (we just got her the washer). If I were buying, I would get the MED6400TQ model. I do not desire to spend extra money for the steam feature of the MED6600TQ model, but that's just me. Others here on this forum love the steam feature with their washer/dryer. Hope this info. helps! :o)

Anyone willing to comment on whether their clothes come out of the Bravos washer all tangled and wrinkled? That is something I have heard and want to know before purchasing one. Thanks.

Here's a vid for comparison of my Fisher & Paykel AquaSmart running two sets of sheets (queen and twin) and several pillow covers on the designated Sheets cycle. Run it at full-screen and 2x speed to see the rollover more clearly. Wash period starts at 6 mins 55 secs. Sheets cycle on AquaSmart is a specific deep-fill level, although not as high as the machine above. It's for sure too much water for one twin set of sheets, almost too much for one queen set, good for both sets together. Agitation alternates through three patterns -- long slow rotation, long slightly faster, short faster.

I have the same washer. I won't go into the problems I had only to say that I supposedly needed a new control board and was told it was on backorder for several months. I was having an LF code problem. Anyway, I was fit to be tied as this was a new machine and had never worked correctly when using a hot wash. When I found out about the part being on back order, I called the warranty section at Maytag (used the 1-800-688-9900). Find out if the part has been requested by your repair people, when it is to be shipped and make sure to get the person's name you are talking to. If you call back, ask for that person. You can order the part yourself and have it shipped to the place that will do the repair. Of course you hope that will solve the problem. After a valve, 2 control boards, and another valve (which was I needed), it has worked every since. Fuss, fuss, fuss if they tell you its on backorder. I amazingly got one sent out right away when I told them I would post on a Laundry forum all the problems I had with their Bravos and with the service. I don't have problems with sheets making the machine unbalanced. If you drop them in one at a time around the bottom and don't cover the middle, it works fine.

It's actually Whirlpool's patented "Catalyst" system. What happens is at the beginning of the wash cycle the washer adds just enough water to mix with the detergent to create a super high concentrated mix. Then the washer spins the clothes at a few hundred rpm to plaster them against the side of the wash tub, and then pumps and sprays the detergent concentration mixture onto the clothes from the inside. What happens then is the detergent mixture is then extruded through the clothes by centrifugal force from the spinning wash tub. When water & detergent get through the clothes they drain into the bottom of the outer wash tub, and then get pumped and sprayed again. It's Whirlpool's way of getting super concentrated detergent into the clothes before the washer has to fill up with enough water to float the clothes. It's a very effective cleaning method on soils and stains that respond best to the chemical action of detergent.

The actual wash load size measurement process is really a little different. The Cabrio has an inner wash tub that has a sealed air chamber underneath it that floats the wash tub when the washer fills with water. The water level that the wash tub floats at is related to the size of the wash load, and the type of fabric in the wash load. Also, when the wash tub floats it disengages a spin gear, which allows the impeller plate to be driven by the washer motor independent of the wash tub. While the washer fills it constantly tests the motor torque needed to pulse the impeller plate. When this torque drops significantly, the washer concludes that the wash tub is fully floated. Then it terminates the filling operation, and the washing process can begin. You are right when you say that soaking time in soapy water is a good way to get clothes clean, but cleaning is always improved when you can combine mechanical cleaning with the chemical cleaning you get from soaking. As far as regular detergent is concerned, your wife might not notice any immediate effects from using regular detergent, but over time the extra suds from regular detergents have the potential to cause mold to grow in your washer, so I reccomend using the Clean Washer Cycle more often, and maybe also using regular doses of Afresh washer cleaner. Other effects from regular detergents include increased potential for color transfer between garments, and possibly reduced cleaning because of over sudsing.

I recently bought the Maytag Bravos MTW6700TQ (instead of the 6600 model) washer because the 6700 model is said to be even better, eliminating a problem which the 6600 model had with the impeller. So far, I'm extremely happy with mine.

pluckymama, I haven't had any problem with my Maytag Bravos MTW6700TQ washer tangling my laundry, or with the Bravos MTW6400 dryer wrinkling them.

I did read the booklets thoroughly and carefully before using them, for they are so (wonderfully!) different from my old machines.

I've washed towels and 'hot' white clothes, sheets, jeans and work clothes, and I haven't had any problem yet.

In fact, the sheets were MUCH less tangled than they were after I had washed them in my old washer. I do make it a point to get the laundry out of both machines as soon as they are done, I shake out items before putting them in the dryer, and I fold or hang clothes immediately when taking them out of the dryer - things I've always done. I really like it that both machines 'beep' when done - noise level can be set at LO or MED or HI - as my laundry room is off the garage.

My laundry is noticeably cleaner - so far, I've used liquid Tide HE w/Dawn Stain Scrubbers (a sample packet came in my washer) on a king-size comforter which was dirty/stained/ badly in need of washing, I've used liquid Tide HE w/bleach (w/a bit of baking soda and some Clorox) on the 'hot' whites, and I've used Sears Kenmore HE Ultra Stain-Lifting detergent on the jeans and work clothes. I've been very impressed with the cleanliness of my laundry - AND the gentle treatment they get, even with the high-speed spin. The lack of an agitator definitely makes a difference.

I should mention I very much appreciate the soak cycle on the washer, for I've always soaked really dirty clothes, and my guys work outdoor jobs. When I used it for white clothes today, I chose the 'extra-dirty' option, and the soak cycle lasted 99 minutes - more than an hour and a half, which was great. The machine did not spin, all the detergent was still in there, then I ran it through the Whites wash cycle.

I really, really like it that the dryer is through usually about 10 minutes before the washer is done - that gives me time to get the laundry out of the dryer and squared away before the washer stops.

At this point, there are no negatives - only positives. :-)
