Oh Pesky that's great news. As you probably know my husband is in similar situation (no cure, but responding very well to treatment) so I really do understand the relief. I hope for continued success in her treatment and will keep her in my prayers.

Great news on the MIL front. My FIL had great response to radiation for lung tumors and lived for many years w/o a cure but they reduced a lot in size and he was able to do everything that he wanted.

I sure hope that your DH's troubles are "nothing". Keep us posted. c

If I may ask, did your DH have a mesh repair on his hernia? Have been doing lots of research on hernias for the past few months since my DH will have a hernia repair done in November. I've read alot about recurrent pain after having hernia repair using mesh? Hope he didn't have the mesh, and if so, that the mesh isn't causing the pain.

My DH had a hernia repair with a mesh patch in 2005 or 2006 and it worked splendidly. It has never given him any trouble at all; he's had no pain, ever. He recovered very quickly (though did follow instructions for immediate after care without pushing time or weight limits). He is a very active guy, doing a lot of exercise, including lifting weights.

Make sure your surgeon does this repair a lot and I think it will go very well.

Lirio - DH does not want mesh, so he is not having the US gold standard of hernia repair ~ using mesh. Rather, he is having his hernia repaired at the Shouldice Ctr. in Canada. The Shouldice hernia repair is very different (no mesh).

I am glad your DH had a great result. Was his repair done laproscopically (sp)? Sadly, we've heard too many stories of mesh hernia repair causing a host of problems, ongoing pain being one of the main complaints.

We did consult a few surgeons here in the US, but none had the amount of the training that the Shouldice surgeons receive in doing hernia repair without the use of mesh. Many of the surgeons we contacted here in the US would not even consider NOT doing a laproscopic/mesh repair of a hernia. They "only do it one way" was pretty much the standard answer from those surgeons.

Yes, his surgery was a mesh. He had multiple infections afterward and had to have a 2nd surgery to clean out the infected area. The pain is not around where the hernia repair occurred, but rather near his right ribs.

I am convinced it's related to the hernia surgery as it started shortly after that. Not sure if he's mentioned that to his Dr., but he needs to talk with him about it being a possibility. The surgery was laproscopic, it was an umbillical hernia. Now I'm wondering if it might not be another hernia in a different location...

pesky - it is possible that the pain is from the hernia, especially given the problems/pain he's had since the initial repair. The scariest thing with the use of mesh in hernia repair is the fact that everyone's body makes scar tissue at differing rates. IOW, there's no switch with which to turn off the buildup. I hope you are able to pin down your DH's problem and have it corrected quickly and permanently.

Glad to read the positive post on your MIL! I know all too well how stressful it is. I hope she continues to do well!

As far as the mesh; I see a lot of commercials for various law suits for different surgeries using it. It seems like it's a huge problem; they need to find another way to fix them.

What does his pain feel like? Pretty sure I sent you the EDS info; did he have any of the symptoms; even mild ones? My daughter gets rib pain from hers. Hopefully he gets answers; whether it's the mesh or another hernia.

So glad that you're finally getting some positive medical news, Pesky. Keep us posted on what your DH's physician finds regarding that right rib pain.
