I Survived :)

Hello all. I am relieved to say it all went well. I had my surgeries (peroneal tendon repair, ankle arthroscopy, septoplasty, and turbinate reduction) on Thursday.

It was fine to do it all together. The nose stuff really hasn't been bad. I've just been very congested and not able to breathe through my mouth much. I have always had such bad allergies that it's not really anything new. But, when the dr. has cleaned/rinsed out my nose, I can breathe so well!! I think it's going to be fabulous.

My ankle, however, is a little worse than I anticipated. I absolutely hate being on crutches. My hands and underarms are so sore from using them. The good news was that the tendon wasn't torn very badly. The bad news was that the capsule around my ankle bones and tendons was totally shredded. So, I just hope it knits up quickly.

Being helpless to the point of not being able to clear up my own dishes or carry a cup of coffee is so annoying. My DH has been doing his best. He is just not the best at nurturing or anticipating needs. I have to ask and remind him for every little thing. It's not going to take long to drive him crazy :)

My mom has, as usual, been wonderful. She has been babysitting me and my little boy. We were joking today that we just needed to go pick up Grandma (mom's mother) and then she could have us all in one place.

Anyway, that's the update. Thanks again for your advice!

I'm happy for you, it's done and you're on the mend. How long did the dr say you had to be on crutches ?

Thanks for updating us! Glad to hear the nose stuff went well. Sounds like that will make a real difference for you!

Hope the ankle heals quickly and you'll soon be off crutches. Thank goodness for moms!

If you go out and try to find the whitest tile possible (which is adex, I have it in my kitchen because the tile I bought looked very PINK and I could not live with it) it might end up making your kohler stuff look dingy. Whites are just really tough - nothing is pure white really, they all have different undertones - from yellow to blue to pink. I just tried to keep them all "warm" and that's why it works (nothing in there has seriously blue undertones). I thought about it but we have nearly 300sf of subway tile in the bathroom. 300sf x $2/sf for the stuff at lowes is a lot less than 300sf x $7/sf for the adex I have in my kitchen (I used a fraction of that amount for my backsplash). Thanks for the compliment, I am making the final push to get it done and coming here for motivation hehe. caroline, we used mapei warm gray. I felt it was just dark enough to emphasize the pattern but not so dark that it made my rather large bathroom too visually busy with all of the lines being very prominent.

"At some point in the design process you must decide if history means more to you than a well functioning work space." Indeed. My first four houses had that kind of surface mount lighting. And yes, it provides even, low level of lighting which can at times be adequate. But having the cabinet tops equally lit with the floors does not help when cooking or dining. Spots in combination with under counter lighting direct more light where it counts and is a far more useful lighting design. A few of us on this forum believe that millions of home owners blindly follow the dictates found in home design magazines and install spots without thinking through the consequences. Such an attitude is elitist at best and likely leads some home renovators to make the wrong decision.

You'll be fine; take a deep breath! I had the same procedures. It was two seperate procedures, but they did them both at the same appointment and under the same sedation. The did the colonoscopy first. I started coming around while they were doing the endoscopy, but I was so groggy and disoriented I barely remember. They gave me another drop or two of the sedation and I was out like a light again. You'll do fine! It sounds far worse than it is. The endoscopy made my throat sore for a couple days, nothing a lemon drop wouldn't help. The other had no effects at all. Have plenty of water and something like Nutra-Grain bars to eat as soon as the procedures are over. You'll be starving. And get some acidophilus-containing yogurt to eat for the next few days. It will help get the system back in condition much more quickly.

Yes, we are very close to this family - closer to these kids than our nieces and nephews. I do think our attendance was appreciated. Had the venue been a place we wanted to visit or would have enjoyed spending more time in I would have extended but that wasn't the case. It was at the opposite end of the spectrum from what we like to do on vacation and not worth it for us to invest any more time or money in being there. We're glad we went just don't think we'll do it again. Really hoping the rest of their kids get married in the US.

Glad you are doing well.

I saw a woman shopping with the coolest device for a broken ankle. It is a lightweight scooter that the knee rests on. She moved around the store pushing her cart and this thing supporting her knee. I was so fascinated that I followed her out of the store talking about it. She said it made it much easier getting back to work. She easily got into her car - I think it folded up.

Congratulations of getting through this and on to mending. Make sure and follow all the recovery tips . I have had friends who "knew better" and ended up slowing their recovery. GOOD LUCK !!! c

I don't know if you'd be a candidate for a removable walking cast. I had had surgery on my pinky toe a few years ago, and I'm on my feet a lot at work. The crutches and surgical "shoe/bootie" just didn't cut it--I was in agony by the end of my first day back at work. The podiatrist then gave me a walking cast--black plastic, foamy fabric, and velcro (the ones they had come in a mid-calf and just below the knee height--my podiatrist gave me the higher one, saying it's more comfortable over time since the top edge isn't hitting the middle of the shin constantly). It made a big difference--I was able to get around without putting pressure on my painful toe.

Again, I don't know if it would be ok with the surgery you had, but I would definitely recommend looking into it. Good luck and feel better!

Wow, that knee scooter is such a great idea!
I should only be on crutches for around two weeks, hopefully. I got some different crutches yesterday. They are spring-loaded at the bottom, and very well padded. Definitely a huge improvement from the old style.
I am already in a removable walking cast. It is the knee high boot. I have to keep it on all the time right now, even to sleep.
