Wow, I wonder if the ones who blamed ME, noticed that they kept me waiting, while they were having a makeout session in the supermarket.....a public place, there for people to buy groceries. If someone said something like that to me I would have responded with a snide remark also. Usually when someone keeps me waiting I just say "excuse me" and wait for them to move. The "get a room" comment was extremely rude, in my opinion.

Dotty,your reply to them was great. A young teen man once used the "F" word in front of me. He was with a much older woman. I said "Do you kiss your Grandmother with that mouth?"

Geez, I don't think Dottie was complaining that they gave her a smartass reply in response to her smartass comment. I've heard the phrase 'Get a room' plenty of times (well, not me personally LOL). I thought it was an amusing story. I don't know that I could have been any more polite if I had come across such a display in front of the Oreos.

We reap what we sow,and as others have said,even though the remark may have seemed cute at the time,I feel that a polite 'Excuse me" would have probally brought about a response of"Oh sorry lady"
Having worked with the public all my life.I can't
tell you the times I saw similar situations where things escallated because of someone choosing the wrong words.
I'm not saying that making out in public is acceptable,but we were all young once and did stupid foolish things.
We all should be careful these days.
This couple may have been harmless,although inconsiderate,but the next confrontation could have more serious results.

I found myself in a situation not to long ago with the same situation...I was pushing my basket and needed to stop and tie my shoe so I moved to an area out of traffic and some "Lady" came up right behind me in a cart...I was bent over tying my shoe and she was 4 inches from my but...and she said "SccccccccccccccccccccckussssssssssseeeeeeeeeeeMe.

Since I was right up nest to a display on the wall, she almost had to go out of her way to come up behind me so I turned around and said...Your the one driving, go around me...

As an "elderly person" also, I would have handled the situation a little differently. I would have waited a few seconds, then smiled and said to the young man, "Excuse me, would you mind handing a package of those Oreos to me?" Knowing young people like I feel I do, I'll bet he would have said "sure" and put the package in my hand. Might not work every time, but most times it does. I would never have said what Dotmom did because you never know what kind of mood people (young or old) are in and if they are packing a gun or have a knife in their boot.

I agree with Mamatoad that the young man would have probably been helpful if he had been asked nicely.

To answer your question dotmom, no they weren't being rude. You yourself said you only waited a few seconds. Hardly can call that keeping you waiting. A simple "excuse me, please" with a smile would have got their attention. No need to be rude right off the bat, and nothing to be proud of. NancyLouise

I usually "lose it" more in traffic than in cases like this. I use my horn when needed, but then afterwards I think maybe I shouldn't have blown it because these days there's a lot of weird people out there among us. In this case, I think I probably would have taken the more polite route of saying "Excuse me". They either would have have moved or I would have just left the area & come back later. I, too, can't believe anyone, even teen-agers, would choose a grocery aisle to "make out" in.

this sounds too much like me, and makes me think how much more careful i should be. thanks for making me think outside my box.

Although I agree what they were doing was rude, I actually love seeing young people in love. I would have probably come back to the aisle later or just coughed really loud with a little snicker. Those darn adults talking on cell phones that won't get out of my way bother me a lot more.

I think considering the kids nowadays and the response you could have gotten, you really lucked out with them. For a couple making out in public... his response back was pretty tame, IMHO.

Well,I use a cart in the grocery store too and I confront many rude people as well as people who may just be wrapped up in their own thoughts and not paying attention.I don't know how much of my time I have wasted sitting and waiting for someone to move out of the way,or how many times I have gone past someone,went to the other end of the aisle and turned around or maybe even gone down another aisle because someone was standing where I needed to get to something,or maybe had their basket out in the aisle,whatever! I try my best to be courteous,no matter what the other person is doing.If I am in that kind of situation I will maybe sit there for a bit and if they don't move I will say excuse me and that usually works.I probably would have said,"Excuse me,could you please hand me those cookies.I can't quite reach them!"I have yet to encounter anyone who refused to help me and all have been more than happy to do so.Again,you get what you give.Anyway,I think the remark made by Dottie was a little rude and did deserve the comeback from the teen but that's her business.I can't stand seeing things like that in public but I would never verbally express my distaste directly to those involved.One because it is just rude,and two because we never know how people will react! I don't know,maybe being in a cart would give one the advantage of getting away faster but with all the carts I have used in stores that wouldn't be an advantage!

Ruthie-I agree,there are some in carts who act that way.I try to be a little over cautious because that cart could really hurt someone.What bothers me more than anything is people who are letting their little kids run around all over the place and they run right in front of me.I can't count the number of times I have almost ran over a child and I have told a few of them to stop running in the store. They look at me like yeah lady,you're not my boss and run on!LOL

I think, the LOL at the end of Dottie's post should have told you, she enjoyed the banter with the young man. I bet, it put a big smile on her face. That wouldn't have happened if she had just asked for the cookies, or said: scuse me.

Other shoppers stand in front of an item I need to reach for. Should I expect they go outside to read labels or make their decisions? I'm not in a cart but have been in people's way also. Okay, so what. We all needed to grab for the thyme at the same time. I don't expect to be the only person in the store or in the aisle. I don't understand some of these responses.

So they were making out in front of the cookies. Why is that so horrible? They weren't being disruptive to shoppers or being a nuisance. They weren't undressing, and his hands weren't in her blouse. What is the problem here? They were in your way. Why didn't you just run them over? That would have been very nice of you and so much better than saying excuse me. Now that's rude, right?

Dottie, I don't believe you are this way all the time. Perhaps it's just a bad day. If it is, you'll look at this and feel differently tomorrow. I hope.

I'm more of a lurker than a poster but I have to say I would of (and have) said something very similar to Dottie! There is a time & a place for making out & in a grocery store is not one of them. A quick kiss or hug is one thing but Âa clinch so tight, you couldn't get a credit card between them simple isnÂt appropriate. To me itÂs very disrespectful to display that type of affection in public. It makes most people uncomfortable to witness it. Seems like more people are liking the shock value and the attention it draws to them.

I think she was just trying to share w/everyone something that happened to her that she found amusing. Why do people always have to turn everything into "well, you could've done it this way" It definitely explains why there are so many lurkers, they are probably afraid to post, I know I am most of the time.

In our area it seems to be the store not the people. In our regular grocery stores, 99% of the people and 99% of the workers are great. The ones who do use the electric carts seem to be just a tad more polite than those at Wally World. Yes we all have bad days and good days and those in the carts especailly in the Winter/or cold spells or in in Summer in the heat do have additional problems due to the weather . I have close to getting hit in Wally World more and the attitude is not good. Yes the kids do run more, but again, it is attitude. I see very little of the lack of respect towards all in the local stores.

People in electric carts are clearly "other"..not like "regular" people?? Kids are "other" too? So who is "us" here? Who is "us" at the KT? Certainly not a lurker and observer like me? Is "us" grouchy people? Whiners? Fake phony-happiness people? Who?

I have had no problems with people in scooters in supermarkets. Had to use them myself for a while a couple of years back. Almost took out a display table in the bakery department one day, so I know it really isn't fun to navigate in those things.
I'll take a fellow shopper in a scooter any day over a parent pushing one of those huge carts with a plastic car in front for the precious darling to ride in. Put one of those limos in a supermarket aisle and nobody gets by until mommy decides which brand of paper towels to buy.

I've never said anything to them, however...get rammed by one of those carts, and you're toast.

Guess, what I tried to say was... my disability is a blessing. It challenges me to be a better person each day. It taught me things that are not easily achieved without a challenge such as patience, gratitude, appreciation of the little things, etc.. Of course I have bad days but so everyone else! I'm a woman and I have PMS every month too! LOL!!!

Life is too short to spend on pickering one another. I'd suggest to look for the good and stop looking for the bad in someone.

I disagree. I think "excuse me" would've been the best way to start. Then, if they smart mouthed, the following would've been acceptable.

intherain, you are right, "excuse me" would be the best first approach, but having done a lot of shopping from a scooter, I know that in a lot of instances, people don't grasp how much room is needed to manuver it into the position to reach what you want. What these teens were doing at the time tells me that they were somewhat brain dead to the world around them. So I think it is a pretty good bet that "excuse me" would have been barely acknowledged. They were not shopping, by the way, but were engaged in a public display of inappropriate behavior. Yes, as a teen I may have behaved in such a way also, but that doesn't make it appropriate. And I am sure my Mother would have applauded anyone that reacted as dotmom did. Anyway, I think we have run this subject into the ground. If you haven't walked in dotmom's shoes, don't judge her. We all need to move on now.

I for one am getting tired of all the slamming of OP that has been going on.

I am one that would have made a smart remark, it was obvious that someone was trying to get at something that they were in front of and could have easily moved out of the way. So they deserved a comment.

When did it get to the point here when someone shared a funny story or comment and immediately get jumped on. She wasn't complaining just sharing. I know that this is a public forum and anyone can say anything but if you don't agree or want to slam just click the back button and read another post.

Dirt_yfingernails, you're saying she wasn't being rude, just sarcastic, humorous sorta. And, the whole exchange between them was given and taken in jest. I can imagine that, being that meaning is often lost here since we can't read a poster's expression or inflection. At any rate, Dottie, my response came out much harsher than I intended. How it is taken is absolutely right. No misinterpretation there, but I didn't mean to come off as slamming, only disagreeing in an antiphrastic way.

I have a learned from posting here that you have to be prepared to be slammed by others who don't agree. Been there, had that done, when my post didn't really call for it. Guess it goes back to the old saying, "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen". As someone said previously, if we all had the same opinion, how boring that would be.

Well. I didn't think my post would have such a reaction. Sorry, If I offended anyone, but I still stand by what I said. Yes, it may seem rude to some, but you were not there. When I said I was kept waiting for a few seconds, that is just a figure of speech, I don't know how long it was because I forgot to bring my stopwatch. I have to admit I thought the whole scene was funny to me, and what I said to the kids was not with an angry voice. I do wish I could have had a picture of the guys face when I told him he didn't invent making out and I probably have forgotten more than he will ever know. Yes, I could have just said excuse me to them, but I wouldn't have hsd a funny story to post here. As for the remarks about people who use the electric carts in the store, if you can believe only one thing that I say, believe this.......WE ALL WISH WE DIDN"T NEED THEM!!!!!!! dottie

I just wanted to clarify my comment. I wanted it to show that I am tired of the hits and slams on some of the posts. Dottie showed with a LOL that it was a humerous occasion and she wanted to share. While it is true that we have the right to post what we want and our opinions will change. If a funny post is made then if you disagree keep your opinion to yourself if you don't like it. I had a very good posting friend remind me never to post until I had thought twice about what I was posting and if I didn't want everyone's opnion don't post. I have been slammed before and it isn't fun or was given posts that didn't help matters or that I didn't need.
