10. ‘Lego Fun Zone’
Spencer Lee-Hawk is thrilled to have this loft in his rock star-themed bedroom in Southern California. The entire loft is a dedicated “Lego fun zone,” with a glass barrier installed for safety. It’s a win-win space for both kids and parents, since the toys and other works-in-progress don’t need to be put away, and the adults don’t see a visual explosion of toys on the floor. A graphic zigzag wallpaper helps complete the budding musician’s space.

15. Private Reading Retreat
San Francisco parents Adrian Booth and Jennifer Fetner-Booth’s two daughters share a bedroom, where the 8-year-old occasionally finds privacy from her younger sister in a tepee. “There is a 4½-year age gap. Therefore, having some private spots within their shared space is key to family harmony,” Fetner-Booth says.
Shared toys are stored under their bunk bed in striped boxes, with some overflow put out of sight in the closets. The couple believes that there’s more depth of play when the kids have fewer toys to choose from.
Bunk bed: Oeuf; bedside table: CB2; tepee: Pottery Barn Kids; rug: Angela Adams; light: Midsummer, Tord Boontje; underbed storage: Hable Construction; end-of-bed storage: Land of Nod

After Ryan Larson and Matt Hinerfeld of Burbank, California, took their two kids to Williamsburg, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., their son became obsessed with American history. He told his mother that he wanted a “history room,” so the two pored over websites and books to get ideas. “We kept seeing the Revolutionary War pictures with the soldiers standing in front of their canvas tents, like the ones we saw in Williamsburg. So we set about making a Revolutionary War tent bed,” Larson says.
The couple took a circular saw to an old wood bunk bed and angled the top. Then they wrapped it in canvas drop cloths from Home Depot, and Larson sewed it to add more polish and used grosgrain ribbon for the tent opening ties.
Above the bed are souvenir prints of the Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence from the family’s trip to D.C. in frames Hinerfeld crafted from old pallets. Larson made the curtains from red and white ticking stripe fabric and vintage-style Fourth of July bunting. Their son added other decorative items, including a soldier’s flute, a coonskin hat and a picture of every single president.
