Toro super bagger 20192 vs super recycler

I am in the process of purchasing a new toro. I really like the honda engine in the super bagger but I am concerned that it won't mulch as well as the super recycler since it does not have the baffles under the deck.

Does anyone have a super bagger (model 20192) 2011 model and if so,does it mulch well?

What is so exciting about the Honda engine on the Super Bagger? It will turn the blade and wheels just as well as a Briggs engine. Remember you are buying a lawn mower not a motorcycle. The Super Recycler will both bag and mulch exceptionally well.

I second what Tomplum said and will also add that the SR has grease zerks on the rear wheels. My father owns the Recycler and I own the SR4. He uses the mower on a few lawns a week and has had trouble with the drive system drying up. If you are only using this for your lawn then I wouldn't figure this would be a problem...at least not for a few years. With the SR it should never be a problem as long as you grease the wheels once a season. I went through this same debate last year and am very happy I went with the SR4. I just want to say I went through hell trying to find a decent self propelled, mulching mower after my 11-year old Craftsman finally died. It was a very reliable mower, but didn't cut very even and was a mediocre mulcher. It seems the newer mowers are all about bells & whistle features when all I required was an even cut, and good mulching, and a reasonable self-propelled drive. My neighbor has an older John Deere that he loves, but the new ones suck because they sold off the line to some lower quality process, or so I've heard and read. So I started with the Toro Recycler 20334 from HD, and it seemed to mulch ok until I pulled it backwards over the grass to cut (which is a common move while mowing in a confined or irregular shaped area) and saw it clumping when the grass wasn't even very tall. My crap Craftsman out did that, so back to the store and traded it in and upgraded (+$100) for a Honda HRR216VXA. Well that one seemed more solid and the motor had a nice dependable sound to it, BUT 1) engaging the blade killed the motor at least once, and 2) the bagging chamber behind the mulch plug collected way too much grass due to a poorly designed mulch plug that doesn't fit snugly. I even called Honda to see if they knew anything, and of course they acted like it was supposed to be that way. Right. Also it left a small trail of grass behind the right rear wheel when mulching which I wonder if the gaping hole around the mulch plug could somehow be contributing to that, who knows. Either way I wasn't satisfied with that Honda either so I cleaned it up and returned it for a refund and went to Westlake Hardware and for an extra $30 bought a 20092 Toro Super Recycler because I read the Supers have a better mulching system than the regular Recyclers. Well I can finally say it does surpass both of the other mowers I had and I am very satsified with it. I imagine the high-end Honda is just as good but it's $200 more, which seems out of line for a walk-behind mower, also I heard Honda's parts are too high in cost. Also Toro is a U.S. company here in the Midwest which should help with price and availability in theory. Anyway that Super is a mulch monster, I really like it a lot. I don't know if the standard Recycler is some secondary line made just for HD, but it sucks compared to the Super, IMO.

I bought the 10685 last season b/c I had to have a Lawnboy and couldn't find a new 2 cycle close to home. I've since found a few, but still use my 10685 quite often. For mulching its great, side discharge is about as good as any I guess (never really heard of anyone proclaiming the discharge quality of their mower), and it bags well too, but... In my opinion the bag is a bit small. If you stay on top of your grass cutting, and don't let it get too high, then you should be OK. I was accustomed to a snapper hi-vac with a much larger bag and could go so much further before needing to empty the bag, however the LB does a nicer job of bagging than the snapper did. The tec6.5 has tremendous power also. There are many here that knock the newer lawnboys, and I can understand that with the cult following the 2 cycle LB's have... They are purists and thats cool. I wouldn't trade my 10323's or 10550 for anything, but I also don't mind having the 10685 around at all. **Personal experience story - following hurricane Katrina, we were cut off from returning to our homes for weeks. I had been way behind on cutting my grass (almost 3 weeks since last cut when the storm hit) and it was at least 3-4 weeks until I got home after the storm. The house had been flooded due to the local govt. deciding to not run the drainage pumps and we had an extreme amount of work to do. After a full day of removing furniture, drywall, etc. I felt the need to actually see an improvement in the house so I went out to the shed (raised 18" off the ground so didn't flood) and pulled out the 10685. The lawn was hideous to say the least, but I needed to get this done. I setup for side-discharge, jacked the wheels all the way up (4") and just walked through the lawn. The mower slowed/bogged down maybe 3 times throughout the whole cut. You can only imagine the windrows that were left behind... I made a 2nd pass with the wheels set a bit lower (3.5") and concentrated on running over all the piles of grass, and then made a 3rd run mulching with the wheels set just at my normal cut height (3") and finished up for the day. While my finished product was not a 'beautiful' manicured lawn, it was 100x's better than it was before. It at least made me feel like something was getting done and I actually got comments on how nice the mower cut over the next few days from neighbors. It's funny how something like a lawnmower can change a situation and attitude so drastically. Good luck with your purchase. -mike s.

Wow. This is just wrong. The so-called 'Super Bagger' is the exact, self-same mower as the LB 10795 and is a fine mulching mower. Because of the 'agendas' naturally found with a company trying to market two brand names, they are not 'pushing' the mulching on this model, but if you look closer at the list of features and click on 'Cast aluminum cutting deck' you will find reference to how easy it is to convert to mulching. I guess they're calling it the 'Super Bagger' because it bags so much better than the Super Recycler. It's the LB 'Insight' deck and discharge system, the same as on my LB 22271 commercial and LB 10684 (steel deck version). Bag manipulation is very easy and direct, and changing modes is the same - fast and easy. The mower will also come with a discharge chute to mount of the side port, in addition to the mulch plug for the rear port. I haven't tried discharging with either of mine but have no reason to doubt that it would work fine. I mulch 90% of the time with my two and don't see any particular problems with that feature. The 'Super Bagger' even comes with the Toro/Atomic mulching blade which is also fine for bagging - you can see the mulching cuts on the back of the blade in the under-deck picture.

But will the super bagger mulch as well?

I know I am not buying a motorcycle but I have had bad luck with B&S engines.

If you had bad luck with Briggs engines then I can promise bad luck with Honda engines too. Both companies have a reputation for delivering engines that are long lived if regular maintenance is performed. They will all dies a short death if maintenance is deferred. Toro has a reputation for making well designed mowers that perform as described. If they are both described by Toro as being mulching mowers then I would expect comparable mulching performance.

I agree with roadbike. No matter who an engine's manufacturer is, the engine will have a short life if regular maintenance isn't performed.

I've owned a Super Recycler 20092 for two years. During this time, the oil has been changed regularly and the air filter has been replaced when it gets dirty. Not surprisingly, although it's not the most technically sophisticated mower engine on the market, the Briggs engine nevertheless has performed well and hasn't given me any trouble.

Yes, the Super Bagger mulches fine. It is the same deck used on the 2007 Lawn-Boy 22271 Commercial and the current Toro 22156 Commercial w/Honda engine. It performs fine in all three modes. My version is the LB 22271. I have noticed that it holds the clippings in the housing longer than some others (actually good for re-cutting them) but this can produce a clump at stops/turnarounds. I cut a three-strip wide header all around the mowing area first. This gives the mower time to digest the clippings before coming to a stop/turnaround. I've never had a Super Recycler so I can't say if one would do the same thing on my yard. I can say that the Honda engine runs quieter and smoother than any non-OHC mower engine, and it helps make mowing a little more enjoyable.

What kind of blade do you use?

I will be doing mostly mulching.

Can I use a gator blade on this model?

Exactly what problem are you trying to "fix" by adding an after-market blade to the Toro Super Recycler? You may very well find that any added turbulence actually cuts down on it's ability to process cut grass.

Gator and other after market blades are designed to help mowers that were not properly designed for the purpose at hand.

Just wondering if the "bagger blade" it comes with is any different than the "atomic" blade or a gator blade.

Well, I'm sure it's different. But the question to be answered is whether it will improve mower performance. I deoubt it and think there is a good chance it may degrade it. Just use the machine as built at the factory.

It comes with the 'Atomic' blade. The only blade difference I've seen on this series starting with the Lawn-Boy 10684 'Insight' through the Toro Super Bagger is the blade on the LB 22271 did not have the 'mulching cuts' in the blade airfoils. It still mulches fine and all those blades are interchangeable. I have two mowers that use that blade and I rotate five blades between them. No, I would not buy a new mower with the idea of putting in an aftermarket blade right off the bat. There simply is no need for it and no generic blade is made exactly like the factory equipment.
