Fed Tax Credit for 5 ton HP

I have been researching and talking to dealers with the general result that dealers are struggling along with me to figure out this federal tax credit on 5 ton systems. I am in an all electric neighborhood so short of adding propane my system must be all electric.

I would like to go with one of the better brands. I have had dealers tell me certain models qualify, but when I looked them up on AHRI they do not. So far I and the dealers I have talked to have found only one unit that qualifies. The Lenox XP14-060-230 and the CBX27UH-060. This is a single stage, single speed unit. All the others seem to have problem with the EER rating. Can anyone explain why with the 5 ton all electric heat pump it is so hard to get to an EER of 12.5? Am I and the dealers missing any other good systems?

Amana's 5 ton heat pumps make the cut. It's the first to come up in the AHRI directory.

You need to re-check the AHRI directory.

I found many qualifying heat pump and air handler combinations (no furnace).

Amana's ASZ14 and ASZ18, Lennox XP14, Bryant Legacy 15, Comfortmaker, Carrier, etc. I stopped looking. Used 56,000 min cooling btu's for the search.

All are 15 SEER, 12.5 EER, and 8.5 HSPF five ton pumps.

Research the directory more.

geo is best in a colder climate where the hp can be used year round vs a air to air hp that dropped the output and shuts down at low temps. In mild climates you need to crunch the math to see if it really works, and what the pay off will be. The numbers to include are extra financing (you still need to front the initial bill!), electric costs, maintaining it (typically more then a hp/furnace), etc. However in my area, installing a 2 ton geo system in my new home would be cheaper then a gas furnace after credits. The 2 ton (waterfurnace) price is around $20k with vertical wells and duct work. A Lennox HP and furnace backup is about 13k with the same as above. However with the assumed tax credit and also a 3650 credit from the local power company, it puts geo below the price of the air to air hp, just over 10k to be exact.

Yes on 4ton. This dealer did the load calc, others did not. I am going to have another walk through to be sure everything is covered. I do have hot/cool spot issues in the house. Kids bedrooms get PLENTY cool while our master is the warmest room in the house. Were are adding on our sun porch to the system as well. All of this has been discussed, but I feel like I want to revisit all of it again to be sure. Yes there is one central return and 1" disposable filters. One contractor had proposed doing a filter cabinet at the airhandler that would take 4" or 5" filters. I really liked the sound of that. On sizing and duct work. Current outside unit is 3 ton and all contactors feel like it was too small for the house. I know on the hottest days here, it would run for long periods of time and if we turned the air and came home in the afternoon/evening and wanted to drop the temp more than 5*, it would run for at least an hour, maybe two before it would cut off. We have metal ductwork throughout. No one seems concerned about the ductwork being a problem and I have asked a couple directly. Whoever does the job will be dropping a new supply and return on the porch and probably a return in the master BR. Porch is 240sf with windows on two sides. What concerns me is them quoting very large backup heat furnaces. I'd be surprised if you needed over 100k backup heat. Was a load calc performed? Lennox or Trane either way you would get a good system if installed properly and sized properly. I sure hope Trane would make some changes. 2-stage would be beneficial for humidity control, but not necessary by any means. What coil was quoted for the Lennox setup? If using a Lennox CX34-49C coil, the G60UHV-60C-110 furnace would make the system qualify. If they use an Aspen coil they don't have to oversize the furnace.

Garyg, I have seen the same thing, but was told by one dealer, I believe a Carrier dealer, that all of those were with furnaces and not air handlers. One of the difficulty with the AHRI tables is determining what type of unit it is. I believe you either have to know the model numbers or take a huge amount of time looking up each on the makers web site. Thanks for the ones you listed. I will look at them specifically. I still wonder why the top of the line Lennox and all Trane, American Standard, and I believe Carrier are less efficient than their smaller or cheaper versions?

- Good question. The smaller tonnage systems (3 tons and less) are more efficient than the larger tonnage systems, and can meet the 15 SEER, 12.5 EER, and 8.5 HSPF. It's just a matter of fact. You have choices with a 5 ton hp that gets the tax credit, just not nearly as many if you had a 3-ton system.

As far as the AHRI website, if there is no furnace in the furnace column, the heat pump condenser (outdoor unit) is matched with an (all-electric) air handler as the indoor unit and not a furnace. It's easy to distinguish. An air handler consists of the matching indoor coil, fan, and electric resistance strips for aux heating (no furnace involved). If there is a furnace shown in the column, the "indoor unit" is just the matching refrigerant coil for the heat pump condenser. You need to find matches without a furnace. There are many. Understand?
