We always go to the Farnsworth House when we are in Gettysburg! It's a favorite place for us when we are visiting the battlefield.

In Philly, if you are going to be near the Center City area for the Liberty Bell, you definitely should go to the Reading Terminal Market for lunch or breakfast. There are lots of vendors there for sandwiches, ethnic foods, BBQ, fruits/vegetables, baked goods, etc. etc. etc.! A foodie paradise!

Memphis has outstanding barbecue - not to be missed.

memphis barbeque is a must. the rondevous is the most famous, on beale street which is famous in its own right. the food network folks, the neelys, have bbq places also but i never ate there. (they live three houses down from my son) i loved a place called gridleys when i was there but aren't as easy to find as they once were........ several to choose from. i can ask my son for other local fare that he might know of if downtown memphis doesn't appeal to you.

We visited Memphis last year and ate at 2 great places. Bar B Q at the Commissary and a tasting menu at Flight which is downtown (probably need reservations)

when you get to Dayton, I can't recommend restaurants, but definitely try to get to Jungle Jim's which is in Fairfield. it's great fun and be sure to check out the porta potty restrooms, LOL.

I always loved Sardi's in New York City and if you go, be sure to order the Baked Alaska as you place your meal order.

Beware that the ribs at the Rendezvous are not to everyone's taste. They are dry rubbed ribs, served dry with sauce on the side. Can be a big disappointment to folks who like other style of ribs. Altho I was born and raised in Memphis, I never ever ever had dry ribs anywhere but the Rendzvous, and I couldn't stand them.

I have looked through the Road Food site, and bookmarked it for future reference.

Hubby took a look at the Farnsworth House website and said, "We're going!" It looks like it will fit right in with the setting. Any recommendations on the menu?

I also bookmarked Urban Spoon (from another thread). It looks like there are some good recommendations there, too. I do have to wonder about online reviews, though. Sometimes it seems like only the negative people post on those. This is true about motel/hotel reviews as well.

Philadelphia is just a possibility as a day trip from my brother's house (in NJ). It's about 90 miles from his place, and I haven't seen Independence Hall or the Liberty Bell since I was about 8 years old. (When I saw it, the bell was still sitting outside of Independence Hall and you could actually touch it. From what I've read, that's no more.)

In Memphis, we will actually be staying on the east side of it, at Exit 20, rather than in Memphis itself.

For Gettysburg: I second the Farnsworth House recommendation. I also like the Dobbin House Tavern. Great atmosphere and history.

exit 20 is the one where my son lives and there is nothing there. my favorite restaurant in that area is http://www.firebirdsrestaurants.com/ if you go south on canada road, which is exit 20, then go right, or east, on highway 64 you will find a mecca of restaurants within 5 miles at the most.

Change of plans - no stops in Memphis. It seems that when I originally started adding up mileage and figuring on overnight stops, I forgot to add in 177 miles of I-40 in Texas. That puts us at waaaaay too many miles the 2nd day to make Memphis. Now our overnight stops are in:

* Santa Rosa NM
* Sallisaw OK
* Cookeville TN
* Harrisonburg VA

I've been through Urbanspoon, and am about to start on Roadfood site, but probably not now.

We're still going to Gettysburg, and I'll look up Dobbin House. Dayton is also still on the plans, as is NYC, but still not sure about Philadelphia.

I've heard that Wild Horse Mountain Barbeque in Sallisaw, OK is good! It's South East of town.

Sallisaw is close to Fort Smith, Arkansas, so you might look into places to eat there, too. Sallisaw is pretty small, so the selection may be limited. I've been there, but never eaten there. There's a great restaurant in the boondocks by Lake Tenkiller, north of Sallisaw, but I could never tell you how to get there. It's in the country store featured in the movie, Where the Red Fern Grows. They've still got it set up as a country general store, but mostly it's a restaurant with county cooking. I've eaten there once, but went with friends who knew how to get there.

If you're not in the mood for BBQ, there is another place in Sallisaw called Shad's Catfish Hole. If you have never tried fried catfish, please do! It's a favorite in Oklahoma due to all the lakes and fish we have here. They serve it with beans, coleslaw and hushpuppies... All local favorites!

I don't have any recommendations for Harrisonburg VA, I live "across the mountain" in Charlottesville, VA, where I claim we have more "unique" restaurants per capita then anywhere else, I can offer suggestions for several very good restaurants over here in Charlottesville.

If that's too far out of the way I have a suggestion that's pretty much on your way, in Lexington VA. I have not been there, but a Garden Web Kitchen Forum poster mentioned The Red Hen restaurant in Lexington VA which is written up in the April 2011 Southern Living Magazine. (and at which her Son and DIL are the head chefs)

cookeville is a college town so lots of fast food. no recommendations for anything but should be lots to choose from with a google search for restaurants at your exit.

Donna, I am a Dayton girl born and raised...you will love the Air Force Museum. If you are interested in seeing Air Force One, go to the counter when you first arrive to pick up tickets. If it's a busy day, they have been known to run out early.

As for the food, there are several great restaurants to choose from. For fine dining, the Pine Club(www.thepineclub.com) is an old-school steak house downtown. They take no reservations and it's where all the presidents eat when they come to town. If you like authentic Spanish, El Meson(www.elmeson.net) is great. It's a teeny tiny hole in the wall and they definitely recommend reservations. L'Auberge (Laubergedayton.com) or the Bistro at L'Auberge serve fancy French food. The Bistro is a bit more casual and les pricey than L'Auberge. They are in the same building but have separate kitchens. Okay, as for moderate dining, Mama Disalvo's (www.mamadisalvo.com)is great Italian. Jay's Seafood(www.jays.com) is wonderful, although this might belong in the fine dining category. If you want casual, Marion's pizza is the place to go. Myself included, whenever I talk to people who have moved away from Dayton about the food they miss, Marion's comes up. It's hard to describe but it's a local phenomenon. They are a cash only business still and the place is always packed. There are several locations around town (www.marionspizza.com). Breakfast at First Watch is wonderful. It's a chain restaurant but very good. If you want a local place, the Golden Nugget Pancake House is a Dayton landmark. Apparently they are so old-school they don't have a website. Oh, and if you like ice cream, get yourself to a Graeter's(www.graeters.com). The best ice cream around! Hope this helps. Sounds like you have a wonderful vacation planned.
