A couple more questions relating to plant-out

Okay, so now I have a couple of containers that should be planted out (I'm just waiting for an overcast day now) and I was wondering how you deal with the issue of containers where some seedlings are ready to be planted out but not all. I don't want to sacrifice too many so just wondering what you all do. Also, we have a large deer population here (who doesn't these days?) - do you take special measures while waiting for the seedlings to take off?

My solution to deer is to plant things they regard as cotton candy all around the deer corridors of my property. Except during drought or overpopulation, this strategy works very well and they leave most everything else alone. I noticed years ago the deer tend to use the darker areas of my landscape as their "highway" to the neighborhood lawns and gardens. I started lining hosta and other deer favorites along the spots that don't get heavily illuminated by the surrounding street and house lights on my property. While I rarely get to enjoy the over 90 hosta plants I have planted around the two acres I own, the ones closest to the house sometimes do okay and everything else thrives most of the time. Also it makes me feel good to know the deer and I are not conflicting to a point where more drastic, intrusive measures to their nature would be required ... especially since they were in this patch of woods first.

On the topic of different sprout times occuring in the same tray, I'll leave the answering to others. I use to do that but found it so irritating to deal with that I quit putting more than one kind of seed in a container.

Thanks for your deer advice MIMS. I don't have that many hosta plants to feed the deer ;-) so I guess I'll just have to hope for the best - I'm considering Plantskydd but my husband's nose is really sensitive and he might balk at that idea!

About the sprouting time: it's not that the containers contain different kinds of seeds but, rather, that the seeds themselves seem to sprout rather eratically. I have lupines that are ready to go in the ground in the same container as lupine seeds (same exact kind of seed, collected at the same time) that are just emerging. I suppose I could just leave the more advanced seedlings in the jug and wait for the rest, but for some seedlings that might represent a problem, non?

I have tried a few odd experiments with growing lettuce in DWC. First, I was getting tired of starting the seed in trays or whatever and then carefully transferring them into the cups I was using for my DWC and having to keep the water level high enough to reach the tiny seedling roots (sometimes having to top water some seedlings so they could catch up as I was dropping the level of the nutrient so there would be some air for the roots too. Next, I tried some floating rafts for the lettuce. They tended not to be stable enough to support full sized plants or some seedlings would get water logged and others would dry out. Most recently, I have been floating a thick layer of large perlite on the surface of the nutrient solution and simply letting the seedlings grow in that. It did work but that system isn't pleasing me either. As the lettuce plants get big and heavy they tend to sink down killing the lower leaves. I have plenty of bubbles going so the plants survived the deep submersion but it was kinda messy to deal with. Starting seeds on cotton balls on the perlite was easy though and they are relatively easy to transplant that way. I'm still in search for "easiest/cheapest" way to grow lettuce. (since most of the year it is too hot outside here to grow it out in dirt, indoor hydroponics will continue to provide lettuce for us at least 9 months of the year.) Anyway, I'm now looking into using wicks to see If I can plant seeds directly in the cups and bypass the whole seed starting/transplanting step. I just need to figure out why the mop strings don't seem to be wicking water.

Yah, I have to assume it is one or the other or a combo of both. I hope the weather moderates and more pods ripen so I can pick some to get the plants going again. It is probably getting a little late to expect new blooms now to be able to put out a ripe pod by the end of the season but I have a couple plants that are just looking a little stressed and I am getting a bit concerned. Just happens to be on two of the three plants that I haven't harvested any pods from yet. Both however have at least one semi ripe pepper. One is a hot banana (Hungarian Wax) and the other is a Charleston. The Charleston has always been a sickly yellowish plant since it was a seedling but has hung nice fruit and I have one that started turning orange a few days ago. The hot bananas have several turning orange. So it is just a matter of time.

Lou - no, I've never seen Maggio's around here. I'm HORRIBLE with names lol!! I can see the containers of the two most popular brands we have here, the label designes and everything, but can I think of the names? No!! It'll come to me. I haven't had a chance to deal with my Lodge pan yet - I usually have to cram everything in on the weekends. I never have time after work to get much done and now with gardening season here, if I do get anything done, it's usually in the garden! I plan on taking care of it this weekend tho. And I'm going to check out ebay as well. Besides the nice way they cook and all, I really like that if you need to, you can take the cast iron from the stovetop to the oven. They're just so versatile. And not having to replace pans a couple times a year because they're ruined will be great as well!! I hope I can find some of these older pans everyone else is talking about! I go to flea markets all the time, but I was never looking for cast iron before so I never paid attention to what's available! Hopefully the cat isn't quite out of the bag yet on how great these old pans are and there's still a lot out there to pick from!! Lisa
