Visa gift card question

As incentive for me to stay with AT&T for my cell service (I recently reevaluated my plan options and thought about switching entirely), they gave me, among other goodies, a $20 Visa gift card which can be used anywhere Visa is accepted. I would like to give the card away to a family member to use, but I've already signed my name to the back of the card. Will that matter? Will anyone even look at the back, if the person I plan to give it to uses it at, say, a fast food place? I guess I could just tell him to sign my name, but it's rather obvious that he wouldn't have the same first name as I do. ;-)

Can you use the Visa gift card to purchase a different gift card to another location? Some places don't care and some are sticklers about things like that.

You could try rubbing off your signature. My signature seems to stay on the back of my credit cards for about 5 minutes before it vanishes, no matter what kind of pen I've tried. Maybe the gift card will be similar?

(And if your signatures don't rub off, I'd love to know what kind of pen you're using!)

kraftdee and asolo, I know what you mean. That's why I prefer "thing" gifts to cash, too. If you give a "thing" gift from a basic department store with a reasonable exchange policy, it's almost the best of both worlds, because they can (a) keep it, (b) exchange it for whatever gift-type they want, or (c) return it for a store credit to use for their own everyday purchases (which is almost like giving cash). But if I weren't going to give a "thing" gift, I'd give cash, not a gift card or a prepaid Visa. The only time I really like gift cards are if they are for something that the recipient really does have to pick out themselves. Like my favorite little gift for someone with a new (not a first) home: a gift certificate to switchhits.com or similar site, so they can pick out fun switchplates and outlet covers to give a little finishing touch to a room. But otherwise, I would either choose something myself or else give cash; if you want them to do the shopping, no sense limiting them.

Most of my kids and grandkids live far away,so buying presents for birthdays and holidays entails exorbitant shipping charges. SOOO, rather than gift cards, to fit in a greeting card envelope, I switched to cold hard cash -- right size, etc. The grands save gift money to buy computer games, etc. And to personalize it, I learned (am still learning) to do origami with the money. I do shirts and pants and bowties and hearts and stars. I've done 4 attempts at a cat, but it keeps ending up looking like an armadillo. :-( And the dollar sign and arrow didn't happen for recent birthdays. I need more practice. . . .

Oh sorry - I went off in a different direction. I'm not a big fan of gift cards in general, especially ones that tie you into one specific restaurant or store. I've had a few bad experiences where the cards went unused - in one instance the restaurant closed unexpectedly and I still have one for the Rittenhouse Spa that DH gave me the Christmas before Covid. I can still use it but just haven't felt inclined to book it. Now that the kids are older we've tried to simplify things. They own their own homes and two have children. They have repeatedly commented that they don't need stuff. I don't have a problem with giving them money and we give them checks on Christmas and their birthdays and it is definitely what they want and can use. A few years ago one of the kids set up Elfster- an online gift exchange that his wife uses with her large, extended family. It resembles a Pollyanna - you're matched up with one other family member, a price limit is set and each participant has to suggest things that they would like to receive and they can even include a link to the actual item. This is the third year and it's worked out well and is helpful in eliminating the 'stuff' factor.

I have an Amex, but my most generally used card is a MC. I think the issue is what the contract allows. If you cancel within the time your contract allows for a refund, you should get the refund. They will follow the law and your contracts or terms of dealing -- and usually give a good customer the benefit of the doubt (I ordered a product and realized when the shipping was not happening as expected that it was a Chinese company looking as though they were a major US company. When the product arrived, it was inferior quality. The seller -- whose web page said satisfaction guaranteed, money back, etc., denied a refund. I had it all documented, including screenshots and got a full refund. I got fooled, but they still had my back. If you are nervous about things beyond your control, you might want to look into trip insurance -- though they cover less since the pandemic began. Don't expect the bank card, any bank card, to be your trip insurer unless they specifically provide that as a perk when you use their card to pay for the travel.

Well, shoot. Rubbing doesn't work (it just starts removing the background of the signature block, not the ink itself). Pilot, Easy Touch, blue fine point. ;-)

Good idea to just get another gift card with this one. That didn't even occur to me!

I don't remember ever being asked for a signature on a Visa gift card. I JUST had one from AT&T myself a few weeks ago. Used it for groceries. I handed it over and said, use it up and I'll pay the balance on my credit card. She did just that and I signed for my own CC but not for the gift card.

Just an FYI, although you probably know this ~ Have you applied for an employee discount on your plan? I work for our local school district and Verizon gives us a 19% discount on our monthly bill. Most carriers will offer a discount to employees of government agencies, municipalities, school districts, etc. The only thing you have to do is provide proof of employment and fill out a minimal amount of paperwork.

I've had two AT&T gift cards in the past 6 months. $100 each. Neither in my name (kids). No one checks. I always used a grocery store.

Thanks. Maybe I'll just give the card to him, and tell him if he has any problems to let me know and I'll "make it right."

Mrsmarv, I didn't know that providers offered an employee discount. I'm not sure I'd qualify for something like that though, since I'm on what probably amounts to the "Luddite Plan." I went the Go Phone route, where I pay per call and refill my account every three months with a phone card. I rarely if ever use my cell phone, so this is working out nicely for me.

A lot of store don't let you use a gift card to buy a gift card.

As far as giving it to someone, if it's an actual gift, I wouldn't since you signed it already. Depends on how close you are to the person.

If I got it as a "gift" I'm not sure if I would actually use it if a female signed it and I was male. I'd hate to actually count on it paying for something, then having problems & no cash to pay.
