Is there always such a big activation fee on these things? Was going to purchase one at Wally World last night and a $25.00 card was going to cost $29.28 $4.28 to activate the thing??? Um, no. Will give cash instead. Is there somehwere you can purchase these things without the hefty fee? (Like a bank?)

You will pay the fee buying it at the bank also.

Do the store cards instead. I know it is nicer to give the generic ones, but it bothers me too to have to pay extra to give a gift.
Do you have to pay for a mall gift card as well? I haven't bought one in a while so I son't recall.

The company name is My Free Travel, contact number 815-741-3900 they are an A rated BBB company with call centers in Chicago, Utah and Seattle. This is a loyalty program. This is not a way to tether you to a store or gas station. In general people use one store for most of there general purchases, the same with fuel. I always go to the Hess garage on the way to work. We always shop at Stop and Shop for general goods for our classes. We use this promotion program in our cooking school we also gave it to all friends and family. I too thought it was a scam, but I relented and made the $20.00 payment, and so far it works. we have gotten more money back than the $20 we paid out so I see it as a positive. The only reason I decided to do this was because it works in our school. As most, who have made purchases from Eurostoves, knows we are very price competitive, but with this program it offers a little bit more for our customers who want to claim some money back. I look at it this way... if you are going to pay $3500 for a range or refrigerator from Eurostoves because we are price competitive then why not claim a little bit back. call it a rebate, discount, saving, sale whatever, its money coming back. As I say on the phone to customers if you only claim it back 4 times that's $200 back, if you don't want to do it and you are still making the purchase from Eurostoves then give it to your church, friend, family member who may be happy to get $50 a month back for nothing or claim as much money back as you can, its you call. This promotion does not come from any manufacture. The norm for manufactures money back programs is maybe $100. This is a thank you from Eurostoves for purchasing from us. Use it or give it away. Finally i am very realistic and honest when speaking to people on the phone or in the store, what i say is " i don't know how they make money, i don't care all i know is that so long as they are in business i am going to milk it for all i can, if you get $200 back and they go bankrupt or you decide its not worth the time then you got $200 for NOTHING. If you do it every month and you get $1200 back that is fantastic." A few years ago we sent all our customers who purchased a bluestar range a Wok just before Christmas, another year we sent customers a knife set, these were thank you gifts for purchasing from Eurostoves, you could use them or give them away the choice was down to the customer I recall a few years ago my Father went to his bank in the UK to make a deposit, it was the Banks birthday so they were giving the first 10 customers of the day a free camera, my father was customer number 10, he was offered the camera and amazingly in my mind he refused it and said give it to the guy behind him. He did not want the camera but still banks with the same bank today. What i am saying is if this promo is for you fine if not then the sale will come down to knowledge, price and service.

kraftdee and asolo, I know what you mean. That's why I prefer "thing" gifts to cash, too. If you give a "thing" gift from a basic department store with a reasonable exchange policy, it's almost the best of both worlds, because they can (a) keep it, (b) exchange it for whatever gift-type they want, or (c) return it for a store credit to use for their own everyday purchases (which is almost like giving cash). But if I weren't going to give a "thing" gift, I'd give cash, not a gift card or a prepaid Visa. The only time I really like gift cards are if they are for something that the recipient really does have to pick out themselves. Like my favorite little gift for someone with a new (not a first) home: a gift certificate to switchhits.com or similar site, so they can pick out fun switchplates and outlet covers to give a little finishing touch to a room. But otherwise, I would either choose something myself or else give cash; if you want them to do the shopping, no sense limiting them.

Not only that, but there are three pages of entries. Mine is on the last page, but I think it will get lost because it is hard to see that there are three pages. I thought there were just two, and thought my entry didn't make it at first....then I saw another pop up. It's funny, because most of y'all have all seen my recent bedroom make over. I thought that would be a perfect room to enter because I did it so frugally, and was easily put together in a day with everything on hand. I had my essay all done in my head, and photos lined up. :( Fast forward to last night, when I saw the forgotten link. After reading the rules (I am a stikler for rules, and my family often roll their eyes at me. I also never put together anything without reading directions.) and realizing that it has to be a new room "in need", my thoughts turned to the barracks? It's the bonus room, but we call it the barracks because it is so long and narrow. My daughter and I had been discussing changing the bonus room a few weeks ago, so I already knew what I wanted and went to work with the essay and photos. I think I submitted it at about 10:30 last night! Deadline was 11:59. lol Did anyone else enter?

I guess they have to make money somehow on those things; but irriates me to pay to spend my money somewhere. Guess I will either give cash or the store cards. Thanks!

If you do store cards just be careful at Walmart, and NOT get their money card. They charge so much a month even if you do not use it. the regular gift card is ok.

I am with you on that, I love to give Visa cards instead of GC but I do not like that fee~~~DD#2 is the only one who wants a Visa card this year, the others want store cards~~~so I will suck it up and buy her one.

I gave DD#2's BF a Amazon card yesterday for his birthday~~I loved it. It was so easy, my DD#2 says she gives them to her neice and nephew (my GK's) every year so she does not have to think about what to give.

Gee, I didn't know about the extra fee. I was thinking of getting a charge card for a Dirty Santa gift this year, but I don't like the idea of paying the extra fee, so now I will have to think of something else. Duh!

I hate those things. They charge $2.50/mo after 12 months. I found a forgotten one and it was worth nothing whereas I have plenty of older gift cards from stores and restaurants that still have money on them and it won't disappear until I use them.

Oh, an Amazon card would be good too; you can buy anything on Amazon!

Nothing wrong with cash, but kids (and others) do a lot of online buying these days. My kids NEVER have cash on them, they always use debit cards!

My credit union only charges me $1.50. I like the VISA cards much better than choosing the store where I want them to buy their stuff.....and never know when some place will go belly up. I wouldn't pay those extra costs either. I'm fine with $1.50. I usually keep several on hand. As a matter of fact, I think I have about six $25 ones in my wallet now. Never know when a little gift might be appropriate.

I just paid for a VISA card and it did surprise me about the activation charge...they don't, however, charge $2.50 a month after 12 months (I checked this out before buying). But..I am still miffed about that extra charge.

Just this week I purchased an Amazon card on line and sent it via the Amazon site for a very last minute birthday gift.

I see though that you can get an actual card via purchase at many local stores, and probably on line too.

Thank you for that link Sue. I just love Amazon....my kids gave me a kindle with a year of Amazon Prime, so everything I order comes in 2 days, free shipping! It's amazing how big Amazon got considering it started in a garage, shipping only used books!

I gave gift cards to nieces and nephews one year. They said they couldn't get them activated or lost them, all except one niece. Now I give them cash. Always the right size.

Most of my kids and grandkids live far away,so buying presents for birthdays and holidays entails exorbitant shipping charges. SOOO, rather than gift cards, to fit in a greeting card envelope, I switched to cold hard cash -- right size, etc. The grands save gift money to buy computer games, etc. And to personalize it, I learned (am still learning) to do origami with the money. I do shirts and pants and bowties and hearts and stars. I've done 4 attempts at a cat, but it keeps ending up looking like an armadillo. :-( And the dollar sign and arrow didn't happen for recent birthdays. I need more practice. . . .

Oh, I've seen the shirts and probably wouldn't have the patience to do that! I really don't know what an armadillo looks like, but who cares; it's better than a plain old dollar bill! :)
